One third of the US workforce is currently comprised of Independent Workers - those who work for themselves (usually from home or coffee shops) as freelancers, independent contractors, consultants, and more. Experts predict that by the year 2020 over 50% of the US workforce will be Independent Workers. This begs the question, where will all of these Independent Workers work from? And that's where a whole new world and professional lifestyle - in fact a movement - called "coworking" comes in. Here's a look at NYC, one of the most dynamic hubs it's taking root in, and a fresh and fun new way for people to begin to connect and cowork for themselves.
We are proud to announce that in Spring 2016, there will be a great new community in York County for all freelancers, at-home and mobile workers, entrepreneurs, consultants, contract workers, and more. After years of seeing successful coworking communities in Uptown Charlotte thrive, we are excited to bring that vibrancy and innovation to Fort Mill, Rock Hill and South Charlotte!
Before we open our doors, we want to get to know the people in our community and what YOU would want in a coworking environment. Connect with us and join in some brainstorming about what services and amenities we could supply and what your talents can bring to the table!
Don’t know about coworking? Check out this intro, like our page and join our meet-up group …. That way, you can stay informed of events and developments and make connections that will help you AND your business.
Envision Ford City - Report to the CommunityMike Morency
Community Conversations was NOT about rehashing problems, or gathering together to complain. It was NOT about other people’s ideas or plans for Ford City, but about listening to the people of the community, building on their ideas and engaging in their meaning…. It is about Seeing THEIR vision for THEIR community, through THEIR eyes!
Community Conversations allowed the people of Ford City to begin to dream together, and as this Brazilian Proverb says…
"When you dream alone,
it remains just a dream.
When you dream together,
it is the beginning of a new reality."

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

What is Downtown Project - November 2012
1.
2. Las Vegas City Hall
It all started with the plan to move Zappos Headquarters to the former City
Hall building in Downtown Las Vegas. What could that campus look like?
How could it influence the city around it? How could it help to revitalize
Downtown?
3. Google
There are some corporate
campuses that you never
have to leave—with dining
options, outdoor
recreation, gardens, even
your dog. But how do the
people there interact with
the community around
them?
4. Nike
Or what about Nike’s World Headquarters? They have a swimming pool,
soccer fields, volley ball courts, workout facilities, and more.
5. Apple
The Google, Nike, and Apple campuses are all amazing. And Zappos
considered creating a similar HQ and polled their employees about what
kinds of amenities they would like at their workplace.
6. Doggy Day Care
When Zappos employees were surveyed about the amenities they would prefer to
have in their new campus, doggy day care was the number one request—not
human day care..
7. NYU Campus
Rather than build a campus that’s insular, that doesn’t create reasons for people
to leave, Zappos decided that it would be more interesting to create a campus
that interacts with the community around it, that encourages people to interact
serendipitously with people they might not otherwise meet. A campus that
functions not only as a workplace, but also as a community gathering space.
8. Downtown Las Vegas
Fremont East
Surrounding the future Zappos HQ is an amazing neighborhood called Fremont
East. It’s filled with bars, restaurants, and shops run by local business owners.
It’s the kind of neighborhood where people run into friends on the street, where
any bar or restaurant you visit, you’ll see someone you know.
9. Downtown Las Vegas
Fremont East
It’s actually one of the most community-focused neighborhoods you can
imagine—in the place you would least expect it. Downtown Las Vegas.
Downtown Project was created as its own entity with a mission to help to
revitalize the neighborhood and catalyze the growth of the community.
10. DOWNTOWN PROJECT
A $350 Million Investment
$ 50M Small Businesses
$ 50M Tech Startups
$ 50M Education, Arts, Culture
$200M Residential & Real Estate
12. ROI vs. ROC
Instead of maximizing short-term
ROI: Return On Investment
We focus on maximizing long-term
ROC: Return On Community
and institutionalizing ROL:
Return On Luck – Accelerating
Serendipity
13. THE BIG BET . . .
Accelerating
Collisions, Community & Co-Learning

Accelerating
Happiness, Luckiness, Innovation &
Productivity
14. $50M Small Businesses
We’re investing in up to 200 small businesses in Downtown Las Vegas. All of
those Post-Its on the wall represent small business ideas.
15. $50M Small Businesses
We’re primarily interested in owner-operated small businesses that
meet these criteria:
• Are you passionate about your idea?
• Does your idea contribute to community in some way?
• Are you capable of executing your business idea?
• Is your business model sustainable?
• What is it that makes your business unique or the best at what you
do?
• What about your business would make it worthy of a story in a major
publication or national news outlet?
16. Entrepreneurs:
“What would you be
passionate about doing for
10 years even if you
never made a dime?”
17. Natalie
This is Chef Natalie Young. Her restaurant EAT is our first small business investment
to open. Formerly, she worked as a Chef on The Strip. And she was about to leave
Las Vegas for good until she was able to follow her passion and fulfill her dream to
open her own restaurant.
29. $50M Tech Startups
We’re investing $50 I’m
million dollars in tech
startups like Romotive
Romo!
that are located here or
are willing to move their
operations to Downtown
Las Vegas. Tech
startups can grow
rapidly and create jobs
quickly. We believe you
can change the world
with a laptop.
30. $50M Tech Startups
We’re also investing in spaces for coworking, so startups can have affordable
places to work where they can inspire each other and collaborate in ways that
accelerate innovation.
31. $50M Tech Startups
We’re working with Venture for America to bring up to ten of their Fellows to
Las Vegas this year. They’ll be working with us on Downtown Project and
transitioning into positions with local startups. VFA is a program that sends
young, talented college graduates to work in startups to hone their
entrepreneurial skills.
32. $50M Education, Arts, Culture
We’re partnering with Teach for America to bring 1,000 corps members and
alumni to live Downtown. We’re also planning to build a K-12 charter or private
school in Downtown Las Vegas.
33. $50M Education, Arts, Culture
We’re
investing in
organization
s like First
Friday, to
support
gathering of
the
community
and the
celebration
of the local
arts scene.
And we’re partnering with Burning Man to bring exciting, new public art to
Downtown Las Vegas.
34. $200M Residential & Real Estate
We’re inspired by the book Triumph
of the City and the idea that
knowledge is more powerful than
space.
When people live closely together,
they interact more frequently which
creates more opportunities for them
to learn from each other.
Accelerate serendipity ->
Accelerate learning ->

36. HOW TO ACCELERATE
LEARNING & INNOVATION
Maximize the number of
serendipitous interactions
Accelerate learning opportunities
Increase the metabolism of the city
37. 3 INGREDIENTS FOR SERENDIPITY
1. Residential density of at least 100

40. Our Secret Weapon …
When people come to visit us in Downtown Las Vegas, they find exactly what
we found. A place that is vibrant, interesting, and community-focused. And
they want to stay, to move their companies here. They get it.
41. LEARNING FROM TED, SUMMIT
