Rachel Jones learned about the evolution of magazine publishing technologies through creating her own magazine. Previously, magazines required many employees in specialized roles like typesetting, but desktop publishing allows one person to take on roles like photographer, journalist, and designer. Desktop publishing is much faster than the old hot metal printing method, where each individual letter had to be separately cast for each print. This allows magazines to be produced more quickly and efficiently by smaller teams.
