SciCom NL presentatie WTC2030 16 april 2014Roy Meijer

Roy Meijer has studied journalism, artificial intelligence, and communications. He has worked in communications roles at several universities, including as a press officer and science information officer. As part of his daily routine, Meijer provides communication advice, answers media questions, writes press releases and texts, monitors news, and attends many meetings. In his spare time, Meijer initiates and leads several science communication organizations and blogs about the field. The goals of SciCom NL, which Meijer founded, are to share knowledge, represent the science communication field, organize activities, and initiate research. Its members come from various science communication roles across universities, polytechnics, media, and more.
This document discusses strategies for science communication. It addresses defining goals and target audiences, crafting key messages, and choosing appropriate communication methods. The document suggests starting with defining why you want to communicate and to whom. It then provides examples of goals, target audiences at different levels, types of messages to convey, and various means of communication including social media, press releases, blogs, and events. The overarching message is to thoughtfully consider your objective, audience, and messaging and how best to package and deliver information to them.

The document describes two cases of researchers at TU Delft using communication strategies to engage with stakeholders. In the first case, Erik Offerman made new industry contacts and was invited to give presentations after issuing a press release. In the second case, Arjan Mol raised awareness of corrosion costs through media coverage of a press release, and is now advising government and working with industry on regulations through multi-stakeholder teams. The document then discusses elements of an effective communication strategy such as goals, target audiences, messaging, and dissemination channels.

1. The document provides advice for researchers on how to work effectively with their institution's public information officers (PIOs).
2. PIOs can help researchers by pitching their stories to media outlets, which can lead to funding opportunities, awards nominations, and research partnerships for the researchers.
3. PIOs may provide media training, help craft key messages and communication strategies, and measure the impact of research stories. However, researchers often come to PIOs too late or only want publicity for minor achievements.

Michel van Baal & Roy Meijer – Short bios
Michel van Baal is Press Officer / Spokesperson at TU Delft, and - according to his Twitter bio - ‘a space engineer who got severely lost somewhere along the way’. He worked at ESA for nine years where he learnt the tricks of the communication trade. In 2009, he returned to the TU, where - among many other things - he plays the (very) annoying journalist during these media training sessions. Hasn’t been hit yet, but has come close.
Roy Meijer is Science Information Officer at TU Delft. With a journalism bachelor, a Master in Artificial Intelligence, a lot of common sense and even more practical experience, he co-hosts the media training sessions. He provides theoretical background, moral support and key messages to the scientists to prepare them for the worst Michel can throw at them.
Workshop
Being interviewed by a journalist can be intimidating. To help scientists cope with interview settings, the TU Delft communication department organises media training sessions on a regular basis - on average 40 times per year. During this workshop Michel van Baal and Roy Meijer will show you that as someone being interviewed you have a lot of control over the direction the interview takes, for better or worse. Spoiler alert: preparation is key.

Transdisciplinary collaboration brings together experts from different fields to solve complex sustainability challenges. It requires skills like network building, design thinking, reflection, and social skills. Developing these skills allows researchers to break routines, learn from mistakes through trial and error, and apply abstract ideas across disciplines to foster innovation at the intersections of fields.
Melissa Terras discusses whether blogging and tweeting about research papers is worth a researcher's time. She outlines why researchers should communicate their work (to stay informed, build expertise and influence, and find funding), who their audience could be (other researchers, students, policymakers), and what they can communicate (new findings, expertise, and calls to action). Researchers can use various methods like blogs, social media, conferences, and more to tell people about their work in a short amount of time compared to undertaking the research itself.
Workshop Writing a Press Release - December 14th 2017Roy Meijer
Workshop given for PhD students of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft, The Netherlands), together with colleague Peter Baeten.
The document discusses achieving long-term engagement with museums through creating relevant experiences for visitors. It describes graduation projects focused on connecting museums to the outside world and applying novel technologies. Key areas explored include hidden gems projects, authentic experiences, relevance theory, and connecting museums through pop-up hostels or augmented reality. Partnerships with other museums and companies are also mentioned.
The document discusses a proposed design for an art exhibition at the Science Centre Delft that would feature 3D printed replicas of fine artworks. The goal is to create an experience that cultivates perceptual, conversational, emotional, and intellectual skills in visitors through exploratory and attentive viewing of the replicas. Interactions with the art are aimed to be engaging, rewarding, conscious, explorative, unforced, and self-led so that viewing the artwork is like stargazing.
The document discusses using children to provide constructive feedback to improve museum experiences. It describes a Museuminspecteurs app that allows children to provide general answers to questions and qualitative feedback about their museum visits. It also discusses researching the needs and desires of museum workers, who play different roles like educator, teacher, and curator. The development process for educational activities is outlined, including getting input from teachers and curators, ideating, testing with target groups, and evaluating. A vision for a Museum EducatorChild Tool is presented, with steps for children to provide feedback on current and new museum experiences and ideas.
The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht, designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld, could enhance visitors' experience through augmented reality. AR could show the house as it was originally designed and lived in over time, enriching understanding of its innovative modular design and changing appearance. A prototype would test using AR and mixed reality on the ground floor to accurately portray the house's history for its diverse, multi-cultural visitors including students and those interested in architecture.
Workshop Science and Media EEMCS 27th March 2017 Roy Meijer
This document summarizes two cases of scientists at TU Delft engaging in science communication. For Case 1, Erik Offerman's communication efforts with industry about his research results led to new contacts in metal industry and invitations to present. For Case 2, Arjan Mol released a press report about reducing unnecessary coating costs that was covered by several Dutch newspapers. This led Mol to discuss the issues with politicians and begin advising government ministries on corrosion regulations and education. The document then provides tips on developing a communication strategy by considering why, who, what, and how to communicate research
Guest lecture: introduction into asking criitical questions for a MSc course on materials science. This was the first in a series, meant to prepare the students for the next guest appearances.
5. Social Media – ook maar een middel
• Doel
• Doelgroep
• Boodschap
• Middel
• blog Communicatie 101
• Strategie - blog Strategisch beginnen metTwitter
brengen of versturen.
8. Een paar doelen
• Social media en persoonlijke profilering
• Social media en netwerken
• Social media en informatie vinden
• Social media en informatie delen

15. Bonusonderwerp:
Organisatie vs persoonlijke profilering
- blog eigen pagina vs instelling
Editor's Notes
Mijn naam Roy Meijer, wetenschapsvoorlichter TU Delft.
