Differentiate the different patterns of
development

OBJECTIVES:

the writers look for similarities
and differences between two
things or persons.
Example: One Word, Two Meanings: The
Language of Science and the Language of
Poetry (page 20-21)
A cause is simply “why something happens,”
and an effect is “what happens.”
The following words can be used to signal
cause and effect: as a result, accordingly
because of (this), due to (this), consequently,
hence/therefore/thus.
Cause and Effect
Problem-Solution
In this type of writing, a
problem is shown and
suggested solutions are
given.

Persuasion
A persuasive paragraph intends
to convince readers to do or
believe in something.

  • 5. Compare and contrast the writers look for similarities and differences between two things or persons. Example: One Word, Two Meanings: The Language of Science and the Language of Poetry (page 20-21)
  • 6. A cause is simply “why something happens,” and an effect is “what happens.” The following words can be used to signal cause and effect: as a result, accordingly because of (this), due to (this), consequently, hence/therefore/thus. Cause and Effect
  • 7. Problem-Solution In this type of writing, a problem is shown and suggested solutions are given. Example: See book on page 23
  • 8. Persuasion A persuasive paragraph intends to convince readers to do or believe in something. Example: See book on page 24
