Illness affects both spiritual, mental, and the physical well-being and health of individuals. Spiritual care positively impacts the person' stress responses and there spiritual well-being, i.e., the ability to balance the physical, psycho-social, and spiritual elements of life. It also involves a sense of integrity, excellence, and interpersonal relationships. During nursing care, spiritual assessment plays an essential role since it makes it easier to determine whether any belief could impact the patient's health (J. Flowers Health Institute, 2022). Various formal spiritual evaluation tools help healthcare providers identify the spiritual needs of patients.
The first tool is the HOPE evaluation tool which assists in the identification of the personal sources of hope and meaning. It also helps in finding out about spirituality and practices. The tool assesses hope, strength, comfort, and how the clients deal with challenging times. It helps in finding out whether the client is part of the religious community and how it is helping; it reveals the person's spiritual beliefs, the practices to determine what is most helpful, and the available spiritual resources.
The other tool is the spiritual distress assessment tool (SDAT). Distress is a common impact of illness and it also occurs when there is the presence of unmet needs that results in disturbances in the individual's spiritual conditions. The tool helps uncover unmet spiritual needs and the possibility of the existing spiritual distress that affects the spiritual well-being of an individual (Puchalski, 2021). The outcome that shows a high degree of unmet spiritual needs indicates the greater level of disturbances in the spiritual state and spiritual distress the client encounters.
The next tool is the FICA spirituality history tool. The word FICA is an abbreviation used to present the Faith and belief, the importance, community, and addressing in care. Faith together with the belief involve determining the client's spiritual beliefs and what they consider to be bringing the meaning of life to them. The importance involves the analysis or finding out the application of the spiritual beliefs are utilized in coping with the disease. The community involves learning how the clients participate in the spiritual or religious community (J. Flowers Health Institute, 2022). With the prevalence of mental disorders, researchers and healthcare providers have studied the efficacy of different psychotherapy approaches to determine the most efficient strategies that can be used in assisting patients with particular psychiatric disorders. Supportive psychotherapy along with interpersonal psychotherapy are prevalently used in the treatment of mental disorders. These two approaches have various similarities as well as differences. Herein, I will discuss the two psychotherapy approaches, their similarities, differences, and situations in which each of the approaches would be effective in the treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders.
Similarities and Differences of Supportive and Interpersonal Psychotherapy Approaches
Supportive psychotherapy approach refers to a form of psychotherapeutic strategy that combines psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral as well as interpersonal conceptual approaches of psychotherapy and techniques (Wheeler, 2014). With this psychotherapy approach, the major aim of the therapist is to improve the adaptive along with healthy patterns of the patient with the major objective being to reduce the prevailing intrapsychic conflicts contributing to the patient’s condition. On the other hand, the interpersonal approach refers to a brief, interpersonal focused strategy, which concentrates on identifying and resolving the prevailing interpersonal problems to alleviate the presenting symptoms (Wheeler, 2014). The therapist is essentially concerned with the interpersonal context and the associated factors that may predispose, propagate or precipitate the symptom of psychiatric disorders.
Both approaches are mainly aimed at bringing a therapeutic impact to patients presenting with the symptoms of psychiatric conditions. However, the two approaches have differences. Firstly, the interpersonal approach is an emphatically supported treatment model that mainly adheres to a highly structured and time-limited approach that often takes between 12 to 16 weeks (Cuijpers et al., 2016). Conversely, the supportive approach is not structured and utilizes a combination or either the psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and/or interpersonal conceptual approach. What is more, as highlighted in the above paragraph, the main aim of the supportive approach is to enhance the patient’s healthy as well as adaptive patterns in order lessen the prevailing intrapsychic conflicts contributing to the development of mental disorders. SPIRITUAL FACTOR IN HEALING
Healing in a holistic sense has faded from medical attention and is rarely discussed in modern (“Western”) medicine especially in therapeutics. However, other disciplines like medical anthropology, sociology, alternate systems of medicine, and medical philosophy have continued an active contemplation of holistic healing. To heal is to achieve or acquire wholeness as a person. The wholeness of personhood involves physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects of human experience (Egnew, 2005).
It is perhaps difficult to quantify the relative importance of the various factors that contribute to healing. It may vary depending on the kind of illness that is being studied. Of the various factors that contribute to healing of illnesses in a community, only 20% could be ascribed to rational treatment using medicines or surgery. The remaining 80% is divided among three faith-based factors (White, 1988).
i) Placebo effect (faith in drugs or procedural interventions)
ii) Hawthorne effect (faith in a health care system, a facility or a professional)
iii) Factor-X or “spiritual factor” (faith in oneself or in the supernatural)
The relative importance of these faith-based factors in holistic healing may be debatable. However, there is no denying that these factors play an important part in the recovery from illnesses.

It is paramount as health care professionals to be skillful in assessing clients to be able to diagnose, plan, and produce optimal care yielding full or partial recovery of the clients. Various assessment and measuring tools are available for mental health providers to help measure illness, diagnose clients, and measure a client’s response to treatment that will help supplement data obtained from the clinical interview. Though assessments usually span the entire treatment cycle, a thoughtfully constructed initial intake meeting can be a great tool to establish and reinforce the required therapeutic alliances between client and therapist, provide reassurance, ease anxiety, and enhance information gathering process required for an accurate diagnosis and suitable treatment plan (Wheeler, 2014).
Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale
The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was developed in the sixties. It is still one of the most popular behavioral rating scales/instruments use today by clinicians to quickly gather information about the possible presence and severity of various psychiatric symptoms and to assess changes in symptoms in response to medications (Zanello et al., 2013). Originally, the BPRS was a 16-item scale, it was later extended to the standard 18-item version and currently expanded to a 24-item scale to measure additional aspects of schizophrenia symptoms thereby increasing its sensitivity to psychotic and affective disorders and to be used for patients living in the community (Shafer et al., 2017).
The 18-item BPRS assess the following symptoms: somatic concern, anxiety, emotional withdrawal, conceptual disorganization, guilt feelings, tension, mannerisms and posturing, grandiosity, depressive mood, hostility, suspiciousness, hallucinatory behavior, motor retardation, uncooperativeness, unusual thought content, blunted affect, excitement, and disorientation (Yee et al., 2017). The manual of administration of the 24-item BPRS offers a more detailed semi-structured interview with more probe questions for each symptom, and providing supplementary rules for the rating (e.g., delusions) including a well-defined anchor point (Zanello et al., 2013). The recent analysis of the 24-item BPRS produced a four-factor solution: Negative Symptoms, Positive Symptoms, Manic-hostility, and Anxiety–Depression (Zanello et al., 2013). The current BPRS is rated on a seven-point Likert-type scale. A rating of “1” indicates the absence of symptoms, ratings of “2–3” indicate “very mild” to “mild” symptoms that are considered to have nonpathological inte.

Though assessments usually span the entire treatment cycle, a thoughtfully constructed initial intake meeting can be a great tool to establish and reinforce the required therapeutic alliances between client and therapist, provide reassurance, ease anxiety, and enhance information gathering process required for an accurate diagnosis and suitable treatment plan (Wheeler, 2014).
Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale
The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was developed in the sixties. It is still one of the most popular behavioral rating scales/instruments use today by clinicians to quickly gather information about the possible presence and severity of various psychiatric symptoms and to assess changes in symptoms in response to medications (Zanello et al., 2013). Originally, the BPRS was a 16-item scale, it was later extended to the standard 18-item version and currently expanded to a 24-item scale to measure additional aspects of schizophrenia symptoms thereby increasing its sensitivity to psychotic and affective disorders and to be used for patients living in the community (Shafer et al., 2017).
The 18-item BPRS assess the following symptoms: somatic concern, anxiety, emotional withdrawal, conceptual disorganization, guilt feelings, tension, mannerisms and posturing, grandiosity, depressive mood, hostility, suspiciousness, hallucinatory behavior, motor retardation, uncooperativeness, unusual thought content, blunted affect, excitement, and disorientation (Yee et al., 2017). The manual of administration of the 24-item BPRS offers a more detailed semi-structured interview with more probe questions for each symptom, and providing supplementary rules for the rating (e.g., delusions) including a well-defined anchor point (Zanello et al., 2013). The recent analysis of the 24-item BPRS produced a four-factor solution: Negative Symptoms, Positive Symptoms, Manic-hostility, and Anxiety–Depression (Zanello et al., 2013). The current BPRS is rated on a seven-point Likert-type scale. A rating of “1” indicates the absence of symptoms, ratings of “2–3” indicate “very mild” to “mild” symptoms that are considered to have nonpathological inte.

Dr. John Bradley is an Emergency Room physician. He worked a 24-hour shift due to a staff shortage. As a result, he had a patient that died because he failed to provide a duty of care, he breached his duty, and caused an injury. A prima facie case of negligence was established when Dr. Bradley failed to provide appropriate medical care. Liability was also based on ‘res ipsa loguitor’ (the thing speaks for itself). The incident is considered a Sentinel Event and must be reported to The Joint Commission (a non-profit hospital regulatory agency).
After a trend analysis of several Sentinel Events, “We Care Hospital” fired the Health Care Administrator. As a result, you were hired as the new Health Care Administrator. You have reviewed the Sentinel Event with Dr. John Bradley and discovered several factors that showed the hospital was negligent. The three basic forms for negligence are malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance. Your first task is to rationalize your answers by using any applicable legal precedents.
Then, prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint 10-slide narrative using a SWOT Analysis. A SWOT Analysis identifies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in a situation. To help you prepare the narrative PowerPoint using Microsoft 365 and older versions, review the video: Record a slide show with narration and slide timings.
Your 10-slide SWOT PowerPoint should follow this format:
1. Slide 1: Cover Page
a. Include the title of your presentation, the course number and course title, your name, your professor’s name, and the date.
2. Slide 2: Background / Executive Summary
a. Describe the details of the situation. Use bullets with short sentences. The title of this slide should be Executive Summary.
3. Slide 3: Thesis Statement
a. Identify the focus of your research. The title of this slide should be Thesis Statement.
4. Slides 4-9: Support
