How do I select a topic for a philosophy paper?
All students are expected to write one term paper on a relevant topic in the course that
considers a philosophical position or contemporary environmental issue in detail. Papers
should be 5-6 pages in length, double-spaced, in font size 12 and free from grammatical and
other errors. Papers should show creativity and imagination but should also be written with
clarity and precision. Students will first submit a thesis statement indicating their topic,
proposed argument, and support from philosophical sources. The thesis is worth 5% of the
final grade and is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students will receive comments and guidance
from the instructor regarding their thesis before the paper’s due date. Consult the Course
Schedule for all due dates. Students are warmly encouraged to discuss the paper topic with
the instructor. Please see the instructor if you have further questions or need help during any
phase of the writing process.
The first step in the writing process is picking a topic that interests you. What issues
were you hoping to tackle in this course? What ideas have most impacted the way you think?
What would you like to know more about? Narrowing the field to a few topics is a good start.
From there, consider what readings our book offers on the subject. You are free to write about
any environmental issue, as long as it is considered from a moral point of view. That said,
you might also look into public policy, environmental science, economics or any other
related field. Following your interest is one way to encourage creativity in your papers.
Starting with a question regarding your topic is a good second step. What would you
like to investigate about a particular topic? Consider the scope of your paper and whether or
not there will be conclusive and clear evidence for you to research. Solid papers will argue
for a clear point and will incorporate relevant evidence when applicable. As you settle on
your topic, consider what premises you will need to consider in order to reach a conclusion
on your topic. Think of these premises as the primary support for what your paper aims to
prove. These three premises should help frame your paper, setting the scope of your
investigation. Next, consider how each of these premises logically fit together to help you
address your topic of choice. Try to make these premises fit as precisely as possible. The
more you are able to simplify these premises into a logical argument, the more precise your
paper will be. Obviously, you’ll return to these as you pursue this topic through research. But

This can often take a lot longer than most people realize. Only when you can clearly
read the article are you ready to write about it.
Scan the article first. If you try to read a new article from start to finish, you'll get bogged down in detail. Instead, use your knowledge of APA
format to find the main points. Briefly look at each section to identify:
the research question and reason for the study (stated in the Introduction)
the hypothesis or hypotheses tested (Introduction)
how the hypothesis was tested (Method)
the findings (Results, including tables and figures)
how the findings were interpreted (Discussion)
Underline key sentences or write the key point (e.g., hypothesis, design) of each paragraph in the margin. Although the abstract can help you to
identify the main points, you cannot rely on it exclusively, because it contains very condensed information. Remember to focus on the parts of the
article that are most relevant.

Take notes in your own words. Using short notes or summarizing key points in your own words forces you to rewrite the ideas into your own words

Writing the Summary
Like an abstract in a published research article, the purpose of an article summary is to give the reader a brief overview of the study. To write a good
summary, identify what information is important and condense that information for your reader. The better you understand a subject, the easier it is to
explain it thoroughly and briefly.
Write a first draft. Use the same order as in the article itself. Adjust the length accordingly depending on the content of your particular article and
how you will be using the summary. For the first draft, focus on content, not length (it will probably be too long). Condense later as needed. Try
writing about the hypotheses, methods and results first, then about the introduction and discussion last. If you have trouble on one section, leave it for
a while and try another.
Edit for completeness and accuracy. Add information for completeness where necessary. More commonly, if you understand the article, you will
need to cut redundant or less important information. Stay focused on the research question, be concise, and avoid generalities.
Edit for style. Expect your readers to be interested, but don't make them struggle to understand you. Include all the important details; don't assume
that they are already understood.
Eliminate wordiness, including most adverbs ("very", "clearly"). "The results
be shortened to "There was no significant difference between the groups".
Use specific, concrete language. Use precise language and cite specific examples to support assertions. Avoid vague refer.

How do I select a topic for a philosophy paper?
All students are expected to write one term paper on a relevant topic in the course that
considers a philosophical position or contemporary environmental issue in detail. Papers
should be 5-6 pages in length, double-spaced, in font size 12 and free from grammatical and
other errors. Papers should show creativity and imagination but should also be written with
clarity and precision. Students will first submit a thesis statement indicating their topic,
proposed argument, and support from philosophical sources. The thesis is worth 5% of the
final grade and is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students will receive comments and guidance
from the instructor regarding their thesis before the paper’s due date. Consult the Course
Schedule for all due dates. Students are warmly encouraged to discuss the paper topic with
the instructor. Please see the instructor if you have further questions or need help during any
phase of the writing process.
The first step in the writing process is picking a topic that interests you. What issues
were you hoping to tackle in this course? What ideas have most impacted the way you think?
What would you like to know more about? Narrowing the field to a few topics is a good start.
From there, consider what readings our book offers on the subject. You are free to write about
any environmental issue, as long as it is considered from a moral point of view. That said,
you might also look into public policy, environmental science, economics or any other
related field. Following your interest is one way to encourage creativity in your papers.
Starting with a question regarding your topic is a good second step. What would you
like to investigate about a particular topic? Consider the scope of your paper and whether or
not there will be conclusive and clear evidence for you to research. Solid papers will argue
for a clear point and will incorporate relevant evidence when applicable. As you settle on
your topic, consider what premises you will need to consider in order to reach a conclusion
on your topic. Think of these premises as the primary support for what your paper aims to
prove. These three premises should help frame your paper, setting the scope of your
investigation. Next, consider how each of these premises logically fit together to help you
address your topic of choice. Try to make these premises fit as precisely as possible. The
more you are able to simplify these premises into a logical argument, the more precise your
paper will be. Obviously, you’ll return to these as you pursue this topic through research. But

Allow enough time. Before you can write about the research, you have to understand it.
This can often take a lot longer than most people realize. Only when you can clearly
read the article are you ready to write about it.
Scan the article first. If you try to read a new article from start to finish, you'll get bogged down in detail. Instead, use your knowledge of APA
format to find the main points. Briefly look at each section to identify:
the research question and reason for the study (stated in the Introduction)
the hypothesis or hypotheses tested (Introduction)
how the hypothesis was tested (Method)
the findings (Results, including tables and figures)
how the findings were interpreted (Discussion)
Underline key sentences or write the key point (e.g., hypothesis, design) of each paragraph in the margin. Although the abstract can help you to
identify the main points, you cannot rely on it exclusively, because it contains very condensed information. Remember to focus on the parts of the
article that are most relevant.
Plagiarism. Plagiarism is al avoid it:
Take notes in your own words. Using short notes or summarizing key points in your own words forces you to rewrite the ideas into your own words
later.
If you find yourself sticking closely to the original language and making only minor changes to the wording, then you probably don't understand the

Writing the Summary
Like an abstract in a published research article, the purpose of an article summary is to give the reader a brief overview of the study. To write a good
summary, identify what information is important and condense that information for your reader. The better you understand a subject, the easier it is to
explain it thoroughly and briefly.
Write a first draft. Use the same order as in the article itself. Adjust the length accordingly depending on the content of your particular article and
how you will be using the summary. For the first draft, focus on content, not length (it will probably be too long). Condense later as needed. Try
writing about the hypotheses, methods and results first, then about the introduction and discussion last. If you have trouble on one section, leave it for
a while and try another.
Edit for completeness and accuracy. Add information for completeness where necessary. More commonly, if you understand the article, you will
need to cut redundant or less important information. Stay focused on the research question, be concise, and avoid generalities.
Edit for style. Expect your readers to be interested, but don't make them struggle to understand you. Include all the important details; don't assume
that they are already understood.
Eliminate wordiness, including most adverbs ("very", "clearly"). "The results
be shortened to "There was no significant difference between the groups".
Use specific, concrete language. Use precise language and cite specific examples to support assertions. Avoid vague refer.

Lit reviews usually are at the beginnings of research articles
Summarize the “conversation” on the subject and establish why your study is important
Look at Zakreski article, Greene article – see in the beginning of their articles, they summarize and explain what others have had to say about the topic

Three functions of a lit review
Your literature review will become the first part of your research paper. Thus, it should do three things:
Include a short introduction that defines or identifies the general topic, issue, or area of concern, thus providing an appropriate context for reviewing the literature (this is called establishing a territory)
Synthesize other research on the topic, explaining what is known about it
Conclude by stating what is missing, what is controversial, what is not yet known, or what needs to be resolved in the discussion. This will provide the transition later to your own study and your research questions (this is called “establishing a niche”)

For the second major writing project of the semester, you’ll produce a comparative rhetorical
analysis by choosing between two different options—scientific or political discourse—and
finding and comparing two instances of rhetorical discourse. Whatever option you select, you’ll
need to address the same questions as you develop your understanding of rhetorical discourse
and the way different discourses address differences in rhetorical situation:
1. The question of exigence: What is the discourse about? What need or purpose does the
discourse address? What fundamental values are at stake? What is the discourse trying to
accomplish—and how successful is it?
2. The question of the rhetor: Who is—or are—the rhetor or rhetors? Who is responsible for the
discourse? Who created it? Does the rhetor successfully establish ethos? Why or why not? How

3. The question of audience: For whom is the discourse intended? To whom would this

factors outside of the discourse and beyond the rhetor’s control might influence the audience’s
response to the discourse? Are they negative or positive constraints? How did the rhetor
accommodate those constraints? Was the rhetor successful?
5. The question of genre: What is the genre of the text, and what purpose does this genre
typically serve? How do audience expectations of the genre contribute to our understanding of
the exigence, the intended audience, and the rhetor? What constraints does the genre
introduce?
These constituents of rhetorical situations aren’t an outline for your project; you won’t march
through each of them in succession in the body of your project. Rather, they’re your initial
research questions that will help you to analyze thoroughly the rhetorical dimensions of the texts
you select.
The form and structure of your project will depend, finally, on a refined research question that
will develop out of your research and your understanding of how your chosen texts work.

TOPIC: The topic of the paper must be related to one of the issues discussed in the area of human
life cycle development.
RESEARCH: (1) The student needs to propose a theme or an argument for this paper and explain how
the chosen topic reflects, or is related to, an important issue in the area of human life
cycle development. (2) Your paper must address one of these two Student Learning
Outcomes: (a) Identify the specific genetic and environmental influences (such as
socio-economic status, gender, race, ethnicity, English language learners, special
needs, culture, religion, schools, media, peers, and family) on physical, cognitive,
social, and emotional development. (b) Describe variables underlying socio-

cannot simply quote studies reported in a textbook or someone else’s paper (even though

LENGTH
& FORMAT: The paper must be typed, double-spaced, and at least 6 pages in length (not counting the
cover page and References page, but no more than 8 pages). The print font used should
be either size 10 or size 12. The margins on all four sides should be one inch.
The general organization of the paper and the citations of references should follow the
APA format (copy of APA Manual is available in our library). In the APA format, the
paper should consist of sections such as synopsis, method, results, and discussion. These
sections (except synopsis) should be clearly labeled, and follow the right sequence.

is holding negative feelings for a group of people, or even a particular person, and is often considered the “emotional component to intergroup attitudes” (Levy & Hughes, 2009, p. 24). As mentioned in the previous week,
stereotyping
is the “cognitive process of intergroup attitudes,” generally referring to associating attributes to a particular group (Levy & Hughes, 2009, p. 24). The presence of stereotypes or intergroup bias leads to prejudiced behavior in some instances. When prejudice behavior does occur, the individual’s emotional response often plays a role.

In many cases, prejudice stems from the unknown. As individuals, we tend to migrate toward those who may look like us, act like us, and think like us. As a result, it may be difficult for us to open our minds and embrace those whose values, beliefs, and overall sense of self differ from our own.
For this assignment, compose a paper that is three to four pages in length. In your paper, discuss the impacts of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination in the context of social psychology. Be sure to address the following points:
1. Define and describe the following terms: prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and ingroup vs. outgroup. Based on your own experiences in the social world, can you relate to any of these terms? Do you identify with a particular term? Why or why not?
2. Examine the social, cognitive, and societal origins of prejudice and stereotypes. Be sure to include specific information regarding categorization, such as ingroup favoritism and the outgroup homogeneity effect, norms, competition for resources, and social inequalities. Of the categories presented, which do you think are the most significant in our society and in your particular community?
3. Analyze the influences that promote stereotyping, and offer strategies to reduce prejudice. What are the consequences of stereotyping and discrimination? Who does this behavior hurt, and in what ways does it hurt them? Are we inadvertently creating self-fulfilling prophecies in our society? If so, how can we take steps to improve attitudes, judgments, and behaviors?

(posted on blackboard) Purpose Comparing and contrasting are always good skills to have but comparing and contrasting science news and the actual science behind them is an extremely valuable ability to acquire. Most of you have probably seen some form of seemingly scientific news on social media or heard it from a family member. Sometimes, that news is rooted in scientific evidence that is widely accepted by the scientific community. Other times, they come from dubious sources that misinterpret or intentionally mislead their readers. Being able to critically analyze a primary source will allow you to truly understand whether people are correct in passing along scientific information or advice. It will likely also help you to have a more critical eye in general for non-science news. By sharing your ideas with group mates, you will also be learning how to work together to share ideas and critique science news together. Skills and knowledge As with the previous reading assignment, reading comprehension is critical here, and you will improve that skill as the weeks go on. For this attempt, you are going to want to focus on how the titles of the popular news article and the real science article differ. Then take a look at the actual content of each source and identify how the content differs from each
- 2. other. Once you’ve done that, you will need to re-read the title of each article—how well does the content within each piece align with the title? You might look at the scientific paper assignment questions again from last week to try to remember what types of questions are important to ask yourself when reading a scientific paper. Now that you have some feedback and direction from Jayden from the first paper, make sure to work on the suggestions she made in the feedback on blackboard. If you want more help, reach out to Jayden or me. Preparatory steps 1. Read the headline of the popular news piece and the title of the actual scientific article. Note down anything that jumps out at you about the way they differ or are similar. 2. Read the actual scientific paper first. You don’t have to read this super thoroughly. You want to get an idea of what they actually did in this study and why. 2a. Start with the abstract, then skim the intro for the purpose and hypothesis, then take a look at the methods. Finally, read the results and look at any charts or graphs to help you understand what they found. 3. Now, while the paper is fresh in your mind, read the popular news piece. Your big job is to discover how well the news article represents the study and the results. The question prompts below will help you discover this. Write down notes in response to these critical questions. 0. Does the pop news article fully include all the information about the scientific study, or do they exclude some information that could be helpful to understand the study? 0. How faithfully does the pop news article represent the findings? Does the pop news article exaggerate the findings or apply the findings in a way that the scientists do not? 0. If anything is different, are those differences there in order to better communicate this scientific information to a lay audience,

Now that you’ve written down your responses to the critical questions, it’s time to focus on one way that the news article faithfully represented the scientific article and one way in which it did not. Review your notes and decide what you want to focus on in the discussion board post. 2. On Blackboard by Friday, 10/8 at 11:59 pm, in 3-5 sentences, write a post in your discussion group in which you describe one way that the news article faithfully represented the scientific article and one way in which it did not (one similarity and one difference). 3. The next day, once others has posted, respond to someone else in your group by 11:59 pm on Sunday, 10/10. You are welcome to do this as soon as a groupmate has posted! This is meant to be very informal, so you can simply note how others’ thinking helped you notice something new, how others picked up on the same things you did or question an idea that you didn’t quite see. Generate at least two sentences so that you have a chance to really read others’ thoughts. 4. By 3:00 pm on Wednesday, 10/13, you will draft a one-page (or more), double-spaced summary of the similarities and differences and include examples from your classmates.
