Are you currently using, or considering Drupal? Whether you are looking to develop an organization's initial website or upgrade an existing one, managing a website development project can be a daunting task, especially if your organization lacks internal website design and development expertise. Drupal provides an extremely flexible platform, but determining an appropriate approach to best fit your organization's needs and budget often involves navigating the benefits and costs of different providers, approaches, and technologies.
Project management is more than, "just do your job". All projects have stakeholders and their perception is reality when it comes to influences projects: the best case - stakeholders improve project roll out, utility, and adoption. The worst case: … well, roads are paved with projected intention. Draw upon design thinking, user experience, and digital marketing techniques to improve stakeholder involvement with examples for change management, product management, and tactical tools for an enterprise-level project to manage 'What’s In It For Me?'
The presentation discusses developing products through robust development processes. It emphasizes doing thorough upfront research to create a clear design brief that focuses on customer needs. A key part of the process is exploring multiple concept designs early to fail fast and cheaply. Leveraging technology like CAD and virtual prototyping helps get designs right before production. Following a rigorous process from concept to production helps deliver greater value to customers and increase business returns.
A succinct, step–by–step “how to” for finding the right agency. The issue many companies face with this critical decision is not having the required resources in–house. Even those with experience may lack the time that it takes.
I recently completed 2 successful searches for a new pet care products brand and want to share my systematic and effective approach that can be completed in as little as 6 weeks.

Get it right the first time through cheap and easy DIY usability testingDavid Minton
At it’s most basic, usability is about insuring something, such as a website, works well. Without usability testing results, design and functionality decisions are based on opinion. Despite the understood importance, many organizations believe usability testing is too expensive and time consuming to fit their budget and schedule. We will show how usability tests can be performed both quickly and inexpensively using popular DIY usability techniques. We will cover both analog and online tools for user surveys, card sorting, tree testing, first click testing, and user testing. You don’t need a lot of participants either—many valuable tests may be performed with as few as five subjects.
This document provides an overview of the Introduction to Algorithms course, including the course modules and motivating problems. It introduces the Document Distance problem, which aims to define metrics to measure the similarity between documents based on word frequencies. It discusses an initial Python program ("docdist1.py") to calculate document distance that runs inefficiently due to quadratic time list concatenation. Profiling identifies this as the bottleneck. The solution is to use list extension, resulting in "docdist3.py". Further optimizations include using a dictionary to count word frequencies in constant time, creating "docdist4.py". The document outlines remaining opportunities like improving the word extraction and sorting algorithms.

How to run an efficient CMS Evaluation & Procurement ProcessLouise Ryan
This document provides guidance on running an efficient content management system (CMS) evaluation and procurement process for higher education institutions. It discusses why getting the process right is important, how to structure an effective evaluation, tips for writing requests for proposals, evaluating vendors, and 10 golden rules to follow. The key recommendations are to plan the process thoroughly, allow sufficient time, write clear and specific requirements, and ensure the selected vendor is the right fit.
How to choose a web or bespoke development companyRalph Johnson
This document provides guidance on how to choose a web or software development company. It suggests asking questions about the company's experience, certifications, methodology, development team, and process. The questions aim to evaluate whether the company has the right skills and practices Agile or Waterfall methodology correctly. Site visits and feedback during the bidding process can help select the most suitable development partner.
The document outlines elements that should be included in full corporate and foundation grant proposals, such as describing the organizational background, proposed activities and outcomes, evaluation plans, and sustainability strategies. It also discusses types of grant support available from different sources and concepts like developing a clear value proposition and logic model to demonstrate how the proposed work will achieve important outcomes. The presentation provides guidance on writing effective proposals that will appeal to potential funders.
The document provides guidance on writing an effective project proposal. It begins with definitions of key project terms like project, project life cycle, and goals. It then explains why project proposals are needed, such as to get approval, funding, and buy-in. The document outlines the main components of a strong project proposal, including an executive summary, background information, proposed solution, defined deliverables and goals, timeline, budget, and required resources. It emphasizes that a proposal should clearly communicate the problem being solved, proposed approach, anticipated impact, and convince the reader that the project merits time and funding.
Grant proposal writing can be an intimidating process but it may be necessary to secure funding for your organization’s programs and services. Connect.DC in partnership with the DC Office of Partnership and Grant Services (OPGS) and Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs, offered a workshop on grant proposal writing basics: tips; dos and don’ts; and completing District forms.
How to write successful grant applications 04 17 12ICJIA
This document provides guidance on successfully obtaining grant funding. It outlines several key steps: [1] determining if you are qualified for the funding by meeting the grantor's eligibility criteria; [2] understanding what programs and issues the grantor wants to support to ensure your proposal aligns with their goals; [3] assessing your agency's capacity and resources needed to implement the proposed program. It emphasizes the importance of thorough planning, having clear and measurable goals, demonstrating need through data, following all application instructions, and understanding the grantor's perspective and priorities.
As grant professionals, we work to avoid all errors in grant applications—from math, to grammar, to citations. Nevertheless, we are all human and oversights slip through. Often the mistakes are minor and overlooked by a potential funder. However, there are times when an error can jeopardize a funding award. It has happened to many—if not all—of us. The critical question is how, as a new or seasoned grant professional, to learn from these mistakes and still successfully continue to move your organization or your client forward.

HijackLoader Evolution: Interactive Process HollowingDonato Onofri
CrowdStrike researchers have identified a HijackLoader (aka IDAT Loader) sample that employs sophisticated evasion techniques to enhance the complexity of the threat. HijackLoader, an increasingly popular tool among adversaries for deploying additional payloads and tooling, continues to evolve as its developers experiment and enhance its capabilities.
In their analysis of a recent HijackLoader sample, CrowdStrike researchers discovered new techniques designed to increase the defense evasion capabilities of the loader. The malware developer used a standard process hollowing technique coupled with an additional trigger that was activated by the parent process writing to a pipe. This new approach, called "Interactive Process Hollowing", has the potential to make defense evasion stealthier.

• Planning content/data migration
• Selection process
• Submission process
• Creating your short list
26
27. Tips: Schedules
• Allow enough time to review and compare
your short list people
• If you think you have set aside enough time,
you probably haven’t
• Projects often take 2x3 times longer than
you think they should
27
28. RFP Fails: Schedule
“The website project is critical for the
success of our new product launch, which
will be released in five weeks. We propose
the following schedule:
Time for firms to draft proposals (1 week)
Time to select firm (2 weeks)
Time to design and develop website (???)
Time to review beta website (2 weeks)”
28
30. Your choices:
• You
• Staff members
• Volunteers/interns
• Freelance/individuals
• Agencies/firms

32. You?
Pros
• No additional cost
• Readily available
Cons
• Opportunity cost
• Do you have the necessary skills?
32
33. Staff?
Pros
• No additional cost
• Readily available
Cons
• Opportunity cost
• Less scalable than freelance or agency
33
34. Volunteers and interns?
Pros
• Free or cheap
• Augment internal capabilities
Cons
• Less stable than freelance or agency
• Less scalable than freelance or agency
34
35. Freelance and individuals?
Pros
• Less expensive than agency
• Augment internal capabilities
Cons
• Less stable than agency or firm
• Less scalable than agency or firm
35
39. Tips: Management
• More decision makers lead to longer and
more expensive projects!
• Provide single points of contact for project
production workers.

professional to do the job, wait until you
hire an amateur.””

44. Vendors need to know
• Goals and Metrics for Success
• Functionality
• Constraints
• Schedule
• Budget
• Decision making criteria
44
45. Goals and Metrics for Success
• What is your organization trying to achieve?
• What are the obstacles?
• How can technology overcome the obstacles?
• How will you measure success?
45
?
49. Budget
• Without a target budget, firms will guess
• What is minimum feature set for allocated
budget?
• If you don’t know your budget, you aren’t
ready for an RFP, go for an RFI instead
49
?
50. Selection criteria
• Price?
• Schedule?
• Technical experience?
• Samples of similar work?
• Company infrastructure?
• Geographic location of vendor?
50
?
51. RFP Fails: Budgets
“Pricing must be submitted on a ‘not-to-
exceed’ basis. If there is a ‘residual’ amount at
the end of the project, CLIENT will retain
the difference by not spending the funds. In
contrast, if the cost ceiling is exceeded, the
vendor is to finish the work at no additional
compensation.”
51
52. RFP Fails: Requirements
“Proposals must be submitted on a fixed
price, fixed schedule basis, based on the
project specification.The specification is
currently incomplete.
The finished specification will be provided to
the winning vendor on the project start
date.”
52
53. RFP Fails: Requirements
DesignHammer: Is there any critical
information necessary for the success of the
project that was not included in the RFP?
Prospect: Yes
53
54. RFP Fails: Requirements
DesignHammer: Is the 10,000 record figure
for the proposed content migration provided
in the RFP accurate?
Prospect: No, we don’t actually have any
idea how many records we need to migrate;
we just took a guess.
54
55. RFP Fails: Requirements
“We need to integrate the website with a
third-party service we have selected.The
service is currently developing an API, but
has not released it. How much will this cost,
and how long will it take?”
55
57. Some questions for vendors
• Sample of past projects & References
• Minimum/average project budgets
• Do you subcontract? If so why?
• Design & development philosophy
• Technological capabilities
• Capacity
57
58. Tips: Qualification
• Schedule initial calls or meetings to allow
both you and the vendors to pre-qualify
each other.
• If you openly publish your RFP, don’t be
surprised by the number of responses you
receive.
58
59. Tips: Qualification
• Limit the length. Saves you and the vendors
significant time and effort.
• Ask specific questions to better compare
vendors.
• Effort required to respond to your RFP
should be commensurate with your budget.
59
60. RFP Fails: Spec work
“As part of the response to the RFP,
proposers must provide an initial draft
project plan for achieving the objectives of
this project.”
60
61. RFP Fails: Spec work
“The proposal must include ‘Design for key
pages, including: Home page, Examples of
other primary/secondary content pages
(including About Us, Events, Media, Our Staff,
Our Work, Our Results; Funder/Partner
pages, Financial Info, etc…)’”
61
63. Which ones?
• Ask your peers
• Attend conferences (like Drupal GovCon)
• Do web searches
• Review your competitors’ websites
63
64. How many?
• Does your organization have a minimum
bidding requirement?
• Ideally 3–5
• If really unsure, consider Request for
Information (RFI) to narrow number
64
65. Compare vendors
• Review proposals with vendors through
meetings or calls
• Ask for an apples-to-apples comparison if
vendor proposals do not line up
• Everything is negotiable
65
66. Tips: Selection
• Indicate what type of vendor created the
current website.
• Was the current vendor invited to submit
an RFP response?
• Why are you seeking a new vendor?
66
67. Tips: Selection
• How many vendors have been invited to
respond? What types of vendors?
• Most professionals will not provide spec
work, but you should ask for samples and/
or portfolio.
67
68. Tips: Selection
•You want to select the vendor
most qualified to successfully
complete the project, not most
qualified to win the account!
68
69. RFP Fails: Selection
“Your firm had the best qualifications, but we
chose not to hire you since your sales team
did not seem enthusiastic enough. Maybe you
were tired after driving six hours to present
to our leadership team?”
69
