My media product was inspired by existing magazines like The Crack and INDIE. I took conventions from their designs like color schemes, target audiences, and styles to appeal to my own audience. However, I also made changes to make my product unique. For my magazine front cover, I took inspiration from The Crack's simplistic style but made subtle changes to attract my specific regional audience. I also challenged conventions from INDIE magazine by manipulating features and making it more focused. Layout – Colour scheme allows background and text colour to contrast in order to separate out sections of information. – Usability is vital as it allows readers to easily navigate around the site, using a navigation bar it contains links to separate pages. – Images are used to make the page look more appealing to the reader. – The main section of the website is reserved for navigation tools to various articles. – A grid system is often used to help separate areas of the website and presents the information in small easily accessible portions.
- 3. Images – Images really help the visuals of the website. – Certain links to other pages are highlighted with images. – Images can often be presented in a pin board style. – Images must be high quality and presented well.
- 4. Coding – Most websites have moving images, are usually presented as a slideshow. – They often include audience interactivity. – Usually regional websites contain sections where people could comment/ have discussions if they wanted to. – Music websites often use downloadable audio files whilst arty website may use downloadable images.
- 5. Difference with genre – A genre has a large impact on how a website looks. – A news style website would use a tabloid format. – A fashion website will be more informal. – Codes and conventions are used to allow the audience to recognize the genre.
- 6. Heading/banner – Can be found across the top of the website. – Include conventions such as mastheads, logos, contact details, navigational links, straplines and social media links. – Often spans the entire width of the website.
- 7. Navigation bar – Situated at the top of the website page. – Helps to direct the reader to various pages on the site. – Helps organise the website.
- 8. Typography – Unique font is used for certain conventions like mastheads and headlines giving them some uniqueness. – Articles are written in plain font allowing the interface to continue being user friendly.
- 9. Advertisements – Adverts tend to have their own boxes often located at the bottom of the page or down the sides. – Adverts are tailored to readers based on their search history so the adverts got appeal to them. – They are also genre related, with fashion websites containing advertisments for clothing stores.
