It found that metal contamination strongly inhibits litter decomposition, with an effect size of -0.813. The magnitude of inhibition differs depending on the type of metal, origin of contamination, pH, and litter properties. The Seagrass Microbiome Project

1. The study developed and optimized a method for separating estuarine plankton using a freshwater plankton separator to quantify associations between Vibrio species and different plankton.

3. Determining the relationships between plankton species and Vibrio populations could help predict disease outbreaks from contaminated shellfish and inform monitoring of coastal waters.
Environmental Effects Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Inside A Model Colon
This study investigated the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on a model human colon and septic tank system. A model colon was established with a baseline human gut microbial community. Two types of TiO2 NPs - industrial grade and food grade - were independently added to study their impact. Initial results found that TiO2 NPs increased cell surface hydrophobicity and charge. Each TiO2 NP type caused specific effects on the septic system, disrupting functions at certain times. This research aims to better understand how TiO2 NPs interact with gut bacteria and potentially impact water treatment methods.

O Brasil tem um histórico de contaminações em reservatórios de águas destinadas ao abastecimento público por toxinas de cianobactérias. Essas toxinas, entre elas microcistinas e cilindropspermopsinas, causam sérios problemas ao homem. O estudo relata a ocorrência de MC e CYN em 10 reservatórios de abastecimento público do nordeste do Brasil. Devido à similaridade das comunidades de cianobactérias encontradas nos reservatórios e a presença de espécies potencialmente produtoras de toxinas, associada às MC e CYN, o estudo sugere que uma expansão geográfica possa ser favorecida por esses fatores.

The talk includes work from 3 PhD projects that I have been involved in and show how a project can develop from a humble beginning to cutting edge research.

DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO PREDICT THE TRANSPORT OF E.COLI IN A NAT...
Development of mathematical model to predict the rate of microbial depositions (E.coli) in a natural pond has been carried out. The models were developed to monitor the rate of concentration at different periods, with respect to the length of the pond at various sample station. Results of the theoretical values were compared with the experimental analysis. The analysis was thoroughly done to determine the physiochemical parameters of the pond. Microbial traces were found from the experimental analysis at different periods up to hundred days. The developed model compared favourably well with the experimental values. The values explain the rate of microbial growth and level of lag phase condition. The growth rate of the microbes were found to be higher because there is high deposition of substrate for growth and energy, while at some periods it degrades showing that the substrates have reduced in concentration including the inhibition from the pH. In some cases when the microbes developed lag phase condition it may be as a result of other environmental factors. Finally, the growth rates are between fifty and hundred days, showing that there is constant regeneration of the microbes including other environmental factors.

O estudo relata a ocorrência de MC e CYN em 10 reservatórios de abastecimento público do nordeste do Brasil. Devido à similaridade das comunidades de cianobactérias encontradas nos reservatórios e a presença de espécies potencialmente produtoras de toxinas, associada às MC e CYN, o estudo sugere que uma expansão geográfica possa ser favorecida por esses fatores.

DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO PREDICT THE TRANSPORT OF E.COLI IN A NAT...
Development of mathematical model to predict the rate of microbial depositions (E.coli) in a natural pond has been carried out. The models were developed to monitor the rate of concentration at different periods, with respect to the length of the pond at various sample station. Results of the theoretical values were compared with the experimental analysis. The analysis was thoroughly done to determine the physiochemical parameters of the pond. Microbial traces were found from the experimental analysis at different periods up to hundred days. The developed model compared favourably well with the experimental values. The values explain the rate of microbial growth and level of lag phase condition. The growth rate of the microbes were found to be higher because there is high deposition of substrate for growth and energy, while at some periods it degrades showing that the substrates have reduced in concentration including the inhibition from the pH. In some cases when the microbes developed lag phase condition it may be as a result of other environmental factors. Finally, the growth rates are between fifty and hundred days, showing that there is constant regeneration of the microbes including other environmental factors.

This study presents a global metagenomic atlas of 4,728 samples from mass transit systems in 60 cities over 3 years, representing the first systematic catalog of urban microbiomes worldwide. The atlas provides a profile of microbial strains, genes, and other genetic elements found in cities, including over 10,000 viruses and 1,300 bacteria. A consistent set of 31 microbial species was identified in 97% of samples. Profiles of antimicrobial resistance genes varied widely between cities and were influenced by climate and geography. This high-resolution atlas enables discovery of novel organisms and genes in urban environments and provides insight into public health issues like antimicrobial resistance in cities.
