higher education before the Covid-19.
Due to the closing of universities through Covid-19, the Sri
Lankan government has promoted online education as an
alternative solution during the crisis.
Due to these reasons, online education in Sri Lanka is now an
essential part of the higher education sector. However, the
education sector, particularly in Sri Lankan universities, faces
many obstacles and challenges to sustain online education.

ON DATA FROM SOUTH EASTERN UNIVERSITY
8. CHALLENGES FACED BY THE STUDENTS
• According to the online survey, 65%
of students noted that the online
education system saves time and
money.
It helps students
to organise themselves and pursue a
balanced education in the virtual
world.

online learning enabled them to
improve their knowledge by
engaging in mutual discussions.
It also became a mode of easy
access to submit assignments and
other proposals on time.
9. CONCLUSION
Many students submitted their assessments accordingly, and the departments communicating with
the students also used e-mail to communicate assessment activities.
Zoom and Skype were used to conduct the viva-voce examinations. The online supervision and
evaluation of research theses, however, often presented teachers and administrators with many
difficulties.
Due to students' challenges in obtaining a reliable internet connection and power outages, several
interruptions occurred in the grading process.
Professor stated: "We faced two power interruptions during our final year students' oral exam.
Because of the poor internet connection, some students were not able to take the exam properly."
