After reading the topic you are probably asking yourself: “Why I’ve never heard about Cassandra Streams?”. The reason is because Cassandra didn’t have any streams support. Until now. The project started as a preparation to multi regional deployment, so we needed to test Cassandra and answer several simple questions: · what will be the replication lag, or how long will it take for each mutation to propagate? · will we be losing any mutation? · will we see any additional load and/or other problems? · and zillions of other questions To answer them, we decided to integrate Cassandra with Amazon Kinesis, so we can track any individual mutation and analyze replication stats. That is how our Cassandra Streams integration was born. Currently it supports several stream platforms, like Kinesis and Kafka. During this talk you will learn how we did it, how we used it to test Cassandra in Multi-regional setup and what are other possible applications of this concept. About the Speaker Dustin Pham, Sony Dustin is part of the small team who built the core infrastructure which delivered the PlayStation 3 store and then subsequently core services for the PlayStation 4. He has been with Sony for over 4 years and continues to focus on providing entertainment experiences to Sony customers. Dustin is an avid gamer and finds enjoyment in solving large scale problems.

ING has been using Cassandra in production for almost 2 years now. The road to get there was often unexpected, dark and gloomy however the rewards always made it worthwhile in the end. We needed to learn through experience as the paradigm shift of moving to distributed NoSQL databases is a real battle on many levels. During this epic journey we realized early on that we needed to create a culture of talking about failures to help DevOps squads to not repeat our mistakes. What better way to achieve this culture than to lead by example. In this talk, we are going to share some of our failures and sometimes ignorance to using Cassandra and how conquered them. The story will build up from novice to advanced Cassandra knowledge whilst also focusing on the culture and mindset of teams to adapt to this paradigm shift. When we talk about bucketing we essentially talk about possibilities to split cassandra partitions in several smaller parts, rather than having only one large partition. Bucketing of cassandra partitions can be crucial for optimizing queries, preventing large partitions or to fight TombstoneOverwhelmingException which can occur when creating too many tombstones. In this talk I want to show how to recognize large partitions during datamodeling. I will also show different strategies we used in our projects to create, use and maintain buckets for our partitions. Computational flow optimization of Wind turbine blades

This project aims to analyze the aerodynamics of a horizontal axis wind turbine using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The analysis compares the performance of blades with different airfoil profiles including NACA-9417, MH-102, and SC 02-0714 at various angles of attack. Additional analyses are conducted with a blade featuring a winglet add-on and with a three-blade rotor assembly. Results show improvements in lift, drag, and lift-to-drag ratio from the winglet. Visualizations of pressure, velocity, and turbulence are also presented.

Effective Ways to Prevent Wind Blade Erosion

Maximizing efficiency of wind turbines is a vital consideration for operators, and managing erosion is a vital method to achieve this. Studies have consistently shown that erosion can lead to a loss in annual energy production (AEP) of up to 20% on severe cases. This figure is hard to ignore, and highlights the ROI benefits that can be achieved from paying close attention to erosion. The heart of the issue is the fact that wind blades come into contact with various elements in the air at rotation speeds up to 250 mph, leading to erosion in the form of pitting, gouging and delamination of the edge of the blade. This erosion not only compromises the integrity of the blade, but also impacts its aerodynamic efficiency, causing a significant loss in AEP. This loss can be compounded by the downtime necessary to make repairs to turbines, so owners have important motivations for protecting blades against erosion and making repairs quickly. In severe cases of erosion can even lead up to blade replacement which can get very expensive. 3M™ Wind Energy has extensive experience managing erosion, understanding the causes and effects of leading edge erosion, and bringing education to the industry on this problem. Continuous Experimentation in the B2B Domain: A Case Study

Rapid value delivery requires a company to utilize empirical evaluation of new features and products in order to avoid unnecessary product risks. This helps to make data- driven decisions and to ensure that the development is focused on features that provide real value for customers. Short feedback loops are a prerequisite as they allow for fast learning and reduced reaction times. Continuous experimentation is a development practice where the entire R&D process is guided by constantly conducting experiments and collecting feedback. Although principles of continuous experimentation have been successfully applied in domains such as game software or SAAS, it is not obvious how to transfer continuous experimentation to the business-to-business domain. In this article, a case study from a medium-sized software company in the B2B domain is presented. The study objective is to analyze the challenges, benefits and organizational aspects of continuous experimentation in the B2B domain. The results suggest that technical challenges are only one part of the challenges a company encounters in this transition. The company also has to address challenges related to the customer and organizational culture. Unique properties in each customers business play a major role and need to be considered when designing experiments. Additionally, the speed by which experiments can be conducted is relative to the speed by which production deployments can be made. Finally, the article shows how the study results can be used to modify the development in the case company in a way that more feedback and data is used instead of opinions.

Much has changed in a short period of time in three areas: (1) the way we build software today in industry is very different than it was even 5 years ago, (2) the dynamics of open source have changed, (3) the average developer has drastically changed. Using data I’ve collected from government statistics, and from various surveys and interviews, I’ll make the point that perhaps a traditional computer science degree might be overkill for average application developer jobs out there: a lot of jobs predominantly involve gluing together open source components rather than having to write components from scratch. I’ll also show that if you’ve been working for 5+ years in industry, then you are in a tiny minority of veteran programmers because there is a literal onslaught of entry-level developers entering the market, at a rate unseen before. These data points are interesting because it affects all of us – both Academic and Industry.
