Moodle
Using
Core functions 3rd party plugins

Gradebook!
• Simple grade tracker
• Use Moodle activities and / or just use gradebook
• Customise final and category grades to show ‘grade
to date’ or ‘predicted grade’
• Hide grades from students or exclude grades not part
of final total
• Add ‘target’ columns to aid target setting and
progress
• Track progress through a range of required elements

Summary
• Gradebook can be used to create a simple progress
tracker for units of work or a more detailed grade
tracker for all assessed elements of a course.
• Use activity completion and pass grades to make
tracking more visual.

Ways of tracking progress in Moodle

  • 1. Ways of tracking progress in Moodle Using Core functions 3rd party plugins Becky Barrington

Gradebook! • Simple grade tracker • Use Moodle activities and / or just use gradebook • Customise final and category grades to show ‘grade to date’ or ‘predicted grade’ • Hide grades from students or exclude grades not part of final total • Add ‘target’ columns to aid target setting and progress • Track progress through a range of required elements Core function

  • 7. How? • Categories to ‘group’ work • Set ‘aggregation’ to calculate grades • Weightings can also be set
  • 8. Moodle can do so much more.. • Than just store grades • The gradebook can be visually enhanced by using a few other Moodle tools! • Activity completion unlocks a range of extra functions Core function
  • 9. Activity Completion • Activity completion can be added to most Moodle activities – Students manually mark when complete – Complete when conditions met • Viewed • Submitted • Discussion or reply • Works particularly well with quizzes, forums and assignments

  • 13. Assignments and activity completion • Can help to make a visual tracking tool • Activity completion options – Submitted – Passed • Setting pass grades for work (such as quizzes and assignments) improves the use of the gradebook as a tracking tool.

  • 16. Course Completion • Still don’t like the gradebook view? • If you only want to know if work is passed or not, use course completion instead. • Set up the required items and view the  or  to indicate progress • Teacher report • Student report

  • 19. Checklists • You could use this as a visual progress bar of the course completion items. • You could also use for students to check progress through other activities (such as meeting assignment criteria). * *watch my pecha kucha for more ideas ;) 3rd party plugin

Summary • Gradebook can be used to create a simple progress tracker for units of work or a more detailed grade tracker for all assessed elements of a course. • Use activity completion and pass grades to make tracking more visual. • Use course completion to provide a simple visual progress tracker.
