- Waves can be mechanical or electromagnetic. Mechanical waves need a medium to travel through while electromagnetic waves can travel through a vacuum.
- Sound waves are mechanical compressional waves that propagate through air or other matter as vibrations of molecules. They are produced by vibrating objects and travel faster in solids than liquids.
- Electromagnetic waves include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. They travel at the speed of light and include visible light.
