We’ve worked with The Kupu-Kupu Foundation as a Community Partner for a while now and this Friday we went up and brought some Posca Pens, t-shirts, canvases and tiles.

Fun at Kupu-Kupu Ubud Bali
We went to Kupu-Kupu on Friday
It was fun. Really fun.
Kupu-Kupu or, officially, The Kupu-Kupu Foundation is an organization that provides medical care, education and support to the physically and mentally disabled citizens of Bali.
They’re also just about the only people doing this.
The only people driving from desa to desa, jalan to jalan to find paraplegics who’ve never seen a wheelchair and the hearing-impaired who don’t even know there’s a sign language. They’re the only ones providing those people with wheelchairs and education.
2. They’re also the only ones letting them know they’re not alone. I don’t know if you know this but Bali isn’t exactly the hub of social and technological progress. Many of these parents are unsure, unaware of what they can do to help their children have as normal a life as possible. Many of these children don’t even go to school, or play outside, or interact with anyone other than their family members.
I know Bali’s seen as a Shangri-la, a paradise on Earth. And in a lot of ways it is. Beach-life. Cost of living. Partying. The quiet north.
In some ways Bali’s still the best place on Earth. But others it’s got a long way to go. This is the side of Bali that a lot of people don’t see. This is the wrong side of paradise.
We’ve worked with them as a Community Partner for a long time and this Friday we went up and brought some Posca Pens, t-shirts, canvases and tiles.
3. We hadn’t seen everyone in a while so there was a joyous reunion before getting to the serious stuff:
Art.
I tell ya, it was tough work getting these guys and gals to smile while they were painting. Their focus is astounding. Only afterwards, when they were content and happy with their finished works, did their faces finally relax and let loose some giant, beaming, satisfied grins.
Thanks Kupu-Kupu,
