The workshop taught techniques for measuring water quality, including turbidity, phosphorus, nitrate, and chloroform levels. High levels of these substances can harm humans and wildlife. Students learned to detect nitrate using a colorimeter to measure absorbance and light emission. While sample readings were unexpectedly low, the techniques can help determine the safety of non-PRASA waters that do not undergo standard purification processes. Maintaining forest coverage also helps ensure clean water.
