Wastewater undergoes three stages of treatment - primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary treatment involves removing large solid objects. Secondary treatment uses microorganisms and bacteria to break down and convert dissolved organic matter. There are three approaches to secondary treatment - fixed film systems like trickling filters which use microbes on substrates, suspended film systems like activated sludge which suspend microbes in wastewater, and lagoon systems which hold wastewater in basins. Tertiary treatment uses disinfection like chlorination to kill pathogens before water is released or reused. The treated effluent and solids must be safely disposed of.
