 Conclusion
What is proper waste management?
Proper waste management involves
the use of garbage as a valuable
resource, usually by recycling items
that don’t need to end up in the
landfill.
What is waste?
• Waste Is unwanted or unusable
materials/substance that has no
use or value to the possessor or
owner
• Waste Is a sign of life. No waste,
no life
• Most people don’t value waste-
that’s why they throw It away
OVERVIEW OF HCC ORDINACES ON LITTER
 Litter Ordinance 2009
• Outlines the duty of each business houses or individuals,
who are must provide litter receptacle bins for the
properties for waste collection. The council may also
install rubbish drums in any public place or area.
• Officers of the council can issue notice to any occupier of
premises if he or she fails to maintain a litter receptacle
bins in a reasonably sound and hygienic condition.
• Fail to comply will be penalize

Waste Collection
• The Honiara City Council waste management &
control division is responsible for collecting
household waste within the Honiara City and
transporting it to Ranadi landfill.
• 4 private collector which are responsible to do
collection at all residents and schools, within
the 4 zones that has be zoned by the council.
• Honiara city council are responsible for the
other 6 zones.
Waste Segregation?
Waste sorting is the process by which waste is
separated into different elements. Waste sorting
can occur manually at the household or
automatically separated in materials recovery
facilities or mechanical biological treatments
systems.
Waste Segregation
There are three categories of waste; Organics/green waste,
inorganic waste and hazardous waste. Organic made up the huge
amount of waste that was disposed everyday which could have
been used for composting and some used for feeding pigs at home
or in the community. Waste separation/segregation simply means
separating different types of wastes produced at home before final
disposal at the landfill.
ORGANIC WASTE INORGANIC WASTE HAZARDOUS WASTE
Solid Waste Generation
• Every day it is estimated that each person
generates about 0.86kg/person/day of waste. The
amount of waste loads disposed at the Ranadi
dumpsite is increasing daily due to no separation
of rubbish/waste at the main source(home, office,
industries, etc.).
• With a population of around 130,176
• a waste generation rate of 1.00kg per person/day.
• Honiara urban area is estimated to generate
80tons per day or 29,000 per year.
• It is estimated that 40%- 50% of waste are organic
waste.
• If the population continues to grow solid waste
generation is expected to double within 18 years.
2011 WASTE COMPOSITION HONIARA
2015 WASTE COMPOSITION HONIARA
Waste Management Issues faced, Honiara
Items Technical Issues Infrastructural Issues Institutional Issues
Waste Discharge Self Disposal is
high
The attitude of
citizens to waste
management is
very low.
Waste collection 28.3% of
generated waste
is unmanaged
(illegal dump,
self disposal)
• Road access is
limited for
collection.
• Unavailability
of spare parts
Lack of waste
collection
capacity(collecti
on equipment is
not enough
Recycling Material
recovery rate is
only 7.2% of
generated
waste. On-site
recycling of
organic waste is
5.4% of
generated waste
Final Disposal
• Water supply
is not
available at
Ranadi
Landfill site
• Landfill
capacity of
ranadi is
limited
No record
system at the
Ranadi Landfill
site
Others
31.9% of the
total disposal
amount is the
waste excluded
from HCC waste
management
• Insufficient
budget for
proper waste
management
• Limited
support from
National Gov.
Ranadi landfill site
 Landfill site total area-
4 hectares
 Capacity; 180,000 m³
 Life span, 5-8yrs
 Amount of waste
disposed;-80 tons/day
 Total landfill
scavengers; 96 plus
 Collection of tipping
fee commenced in
September,2020
 Landfill operation;
gate open at 8 am-
12pm & 1pm-4pm
 7 meter high
Sanitary landfill (Fukuoka) Method
 Semi- aerobic method
 Organic waste had
been broken down by
micro organism which
allows O2 circulation
 Underground piping
system collects
leachate &
transported it to
leachate pond
 Has gas vent to exit
gas (CH4 & CO2) to
avoid combustion
LANDFILL DISPOSAL AREA
 Block 1
 Semi- aerobic method
 Block 2
Sewage waste & Health Care Waste
 De-sludge waste
 No treatment of sewage
waste
 Odor smelling
 Marine pollution
 Medical waste
 Air pollution
 Odor smelling of medical waste
 No incinerator. Open
combustion are not permitted
Hazardous chemical waste & Bulky waste(asbestos)
 Chemical waste
 No space provided for chemical
hazardous waste @landfill site
 Very harmful to every
ecosystem
 Bulky waste
 Temporary site for bulky waste
(Heavy machines mechanical
problem)
 Bulky waste had occupied more
space( Requires heavy machine
for compaction)
Leachate pond & landfill
combustion
 Leachate pond  Occurrence of fire @ landfill
WHYSHOULDWECAREABOUTWASTE?
Cost us money ($$$ For clean ups, waste
collection, beautification, operation of
landfill, etc.
WHY SHOULD WECAREABOUT WASTE?
landfill need a lot of land
WHYSHOULDWECAREABOUTWASTE?
Unpleasant sight ( bad for tourism industry)
WHY SHOULD WECAREABOUTWASTE?
Threat to marine life species ( turtle will die
from eating plastic bags or get caught in drift
nets in the sea, etc.)
HOW CAN WE HELP TO ADDRESS
WASTES ?
 Refuse
 Reduce
 Reuse
 Recycle
 Say no to plastic bags/
wise buying
 Return organics back to
the soil
 Reuse bottles to store
water
 Return cans/ sol-brew
Finally, what cannot be reduce
through composting, reused and
recycled should be properly put into
waste bin for disposal at Ranadi
landfill or waste pit
3 MAJOR
TYPES OF
W
ASTES
Summary
We conduct outreach program adopting an
ecologically sound waste management system
which includes:
• waste reduction
• segregation at source
• composting
• recycling and re-use
• more efficient collection
• more environmentally sound disposal
Conclusion
Waste Management is Everybody’s business,
We do Our part and You Play Your Part too.
Together we make a difference for our Honiara City.

On-site recycling of organic waste is 5.4% of generated waste
  • 16. Final Disposal • Water supply is not available at Ranadi Landfill site • Landfill capacity of ranadi is limited No record system at the Ranadi Landfill site Others 31.9% of the total disposal amount is the waste excluded from HCC waste management • Insufficient budget for proper waste management • Limited support from National Gov.
  • 17. Ranadi landfill site  Landfill site total area- 4 hectares  Capacity; 180,000 m³  Life span, 5-8yrs  Amount of waste disposed;-80 tons/day  Total landfill scavengers; 96 plus  Collection of tipping fee commenced in September,2020  Landfill operation; gate open at 8 am- 12pm & 1pm-4pm  7 meter high
  • 18. Sanitary landfill (Fukuoka) Method  Semi- aerobic method  Organic waste had been broken down by micro organism which allows O2 circulation  Underground piping system collects leachate & transported it to leachate pond  Has gas vent to exit gas (CH4 & CO2) to avoid combustion
  • 19. LANDFILL DISPOSAL AREA  Block 1  Semi- aerobic method  Block 2
  • 20. Sewage waste & Health Care Waste  De-sludge waste  No treatment of sewage waste  Odor smelling  Marine pollution  Medical waste  Air pollution  Odor smelling of medical waste  No incinerator. Open combustion are not permitted
  • 21. Hazardous chemical waste & Bulky waste(asbestos)  Chemical waste  No space provided for chemical hazardous waste @landfill site  Very harmful to every ecosystem  Bulky waste  Temporary site for bulky waste (Heavy machines mechanical problem)  Bulky waste had occupied more space( Requires heavy machine for compaction)
  • 22. Leachate pond & landfill combustion  Leachate pond  Occurrence of fire @ landfill
  • 23.
  • 24. WHYSHOULDWECAREABOUTWASTE? Cost us money ($$$ For clean ups, waste collection, beautification, operation of landfill, etc.
  • 25. WHY SHOULD WECAREABOUT WASTE? landfill need a lot of land
  • 27. WHY SHOULD WECAREABOUTWASTE? Threat to marine life species ( turtle will die from eating plastic bags or get caught in drift nets in the sea, etc.)
  • 28. HOW CAN WE HELP TO ADDRESS WASTES ?  Refuse  Reduce  Reuse  Recycle  Say no to plastic bags/ wise buying  Return organics back to the soil  Reuse bottles to store water  Return cans/ sol-brew
  • 29. Finally, what cannot be reduce through composting, reused and recycled should be properly put into waste bin for disposal at Ranadi landfill or waste pit
  • 32. We conduct outreach program adopting an ecologically sound waste management system which includes: • waste reduction • segregation at source • composting • recycling and re-use • more efficient collection • more environmentally sound disposal Conclusion
  • 33. Waste Management is Everybody’s business, We do Our part and You Play Your Part too. Together we make a difference for our Honiara City. Tagio Tumas
