Hear about the latest research the UCPRC is conducting into asphalt pavements for Caltrans, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration and others, as well as highlighting the evaluation of long-life (perpetual) asphalt pavement projects in California designed to last 40 years or more with minimal maintenance.
"Drilling" often refers to all aspects of well construction, including drilling, completions, facilities, construction, the asset team, and other groups. Good performance measures drive performance and reduce conflict between these groups, while bad performance measures mislead and confuse. The first key to success is how to communicate drilling performance in terms that answer the questions of executives and managers, which requires a business-focused cross-functional process. The second key to success is to drive operational performance improvement, which requires a different set of measures with sufficient granularity to define actions. Over the past 10 years, a very workable system has evolved through various approaches used in drilling more than 16,000 wells in the US, South America, and the Middle East. The system has delivered best-in-class performance. It has proven that an effective performance measurement system which addresses both executive requirements and operational requirements can both deliver outstanding results, and also communicate those results, with remarkable value to the organization. The basic principles are widely applicable to areas other than drilling.

At the California Asphalt Pavement Association (CalAPA) Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference held Oct. 27, 2022 in Sacramento, Ashley Batson, Manager of Government Relations, Road Construction – Ingevity, delivered a presentation on the utilization of WMA for emission reductions.
An important tool to manage GHG emissions for the asphalt industry is already used by many plant operations – Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). The session provides a strategy to utilize WMA to meet emission reduction goals.
This project solved the car interior overheating problem faced in warm climates when vehicles are left outside for extended periods of time. The solution included a deployable sun-shade within the interior of the car, coupled with a miniaturized air-curtain to actively transfer heat out the car using its own ventilation system. Significant decreases in internal mean temperature (of up to 15 F) were observed.

Kadena USAF Air Base, Okinawa, Japan; Waste To Energy Feasibility StudyJeffrey Riegle
This is the finding report that our team created for the Kadena USAF Air Base, Okinawa, Japan; Waste To Energy Feasibility Study. It looked at three different technologies: Incineration, Plasma Gasification, and Anaerobic Digestion. Lots of good information, and more backup can be found in the report.
Provided technical input, peer review, environmental, and project oversight for a feasibility study to evaluate incineration, plasma gasification, and anaerobic digestion as waste to energy technologies on the island of Okinawa, Japan. Each technology was evaluated for technical feasibility with the current waste stream at KAB, potential energy generation and uses, cost and payback, and potential environmental issues.
Based on this evaluation, a Waste-to-Energy Feasibility Assessment Report was prepared for KAB. This report discusses the feasibility of each of these waste-to-energy technologies, evaluates environmental permitting issues for each technology, recommends uses for generated energy (electricity, steam, etc.), and discusses life cycle costs and payback. Recommendations were made regarding the preferred waste-to-energy technology for implementation at KAB.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
