  2. Doing your research helps you to be better prepared for the entire job search process. It allows you to gather valuable information, data, intelligence, to make good career decisions and determine if a particular company meets your criteria
  3. Helps you see that you are equally involved in the hiring decision – they can extend an offer, but you also have to offer your services Actually you have way more power than you think – if you don’t apply, they cannot hire you! You make a decision to allow that company the opportunity to hire you based on what you learn about the company and its fit for you
  4. Researching the company and industry provides you with the information you need to focus your preparation – You can be better prepared to answer questions You can understand the challenges and opportunities facing the company and thus speak intelligently about those You can
  5. The more you know, the better able you are to navigate the job search process We’ve all heard that knowledge is power – however I say that isn’t quite true: applied knowledge is power It isn’t just knowing, it is being able to apply what you know. If you know that a company is in dire straights around an issue you are uniquely able to fill, imagine how you are able to position yourself as a valuable asset to the company You can provide an overview of your thinking about their issue and some (broad based) insight into actions you might take to help alleviate the issue
  6. If you have done your self assessment, then you should have a good idea of what type of company you want to work for, in other words where you fit. Now you can assess companies and see if they fit you – in a moment I will show you how you can make a quick assessment of a company’s personality, just by viewing their social media – they tell you a lot about themselves on their social media
  7. What is the working environment like in the department in which you will contribute to the company? Why is the position open – do you see that the prior incumbent of the position was promoted or took a lateral move that enhances their career within the company – are they adding new positions?
  8. Are they involved in the community? In what ways? Do their focuses align with yours?
  9. Are they financially strong – will they be able to support growth and development, and take advantage of industry opportunities Will there be support for your personal and professional growth – industry conferences, promotion opportunities, etc.
  10. How is this company regarded in the industry? How do they interact with What are their challenges (Hertz Number 2 commercial)
  11. Who are their competitors How big is their share of the pie? What challenges do they face from competitors What is their competitive advantage?
  12. How can you enhance their strengths? How can you help them overcome weaknesses? What strategies have you employed in the past to deal with the challenges they face and how successful were those strategies
  13. Are you interested in this company – beyond the job – beyond working for them? Are you willing to do the work it takes to get to know them and to know if and how you fit their culture and future? The company’s website will provide you with so much information on who they are, what they believe, how they operate, what it is like to work there, and so much more, that benefits you in the job search. It provides you with a “feel” for the company
  14. A company’s website gives you an “insiders” glimpse into the company, their products, services, mission/vision/goals, and so much more. This is all great information for the interview! You get information on the history of the company, as well as where it is headed, You get an understanding of the company’s focus both in the industry and in the communities it serves You get to understand “who” works for the company, to an extent You learn information about the leadership of the company (be sure to follow up with googling and viewing the linked in pages of these individuals Remember the website is all about selling the company, so you want to ensure you get balanced information by researching beyond the company website.
  15. The company’s social media tells you so much about their personality and their vision – you cannot afford not to engage on their sites. You should follow companies you are interested in working for. You will be afforded information that can be valuable to you in the job search And when they ask you what you know about their company, you have absolutely no excuse not to know them!
  16. Hoovers is another great tool that is available within the Trident Library and offers you information for a variety of purposes, all of which can help to prepare you for the interview or even just to know if the company is one you are truly interested in working for. Hoovers provides you with company information so you can look specifically at companies you are interested in. You can also find some industry information, however generally it is related to the companies you are researching. This is good, because it puts the information in context of the company you are researching. You can learn about the competitors of the company you are interested in – why is this important? Because if you know the competition, you are better able to assess the company, its standing and the challenges/opportunities it faces that can allow you to show how you can contribute based on your skills, knowledge and experience. Both Hoovers and IBIS World are easily searchable and provide you with a wealth of information that places you head and shoulders above others who do not take the time to do this type of research. They help you to know if the companies you are looking at are
  17. IBIS World is an awesome tool you can use to research industries, and it is available to you as students or Alumni with membership in the Association, in the Trident Library IBIS World offers you a variety of reports including . . . Also, you are able to obtain Business Environment Profiles including information on consumer behavior, demographics, financial markets, domestic commodities and goods, international economy and commodities, the government, and more – imagine how prepared you can be to impress an interviewer beyond your job – knowing about the company and the challenges or opportunities it faces, and how you can contribute in the face of these puts you in a strong position because few people take the time to get to know the company or/and industry in this manner
  18. Glass door is a great place to hear from current or prior employers about what it is really like to work for the company – I recommend you always take a look here before the interview – really even before applying. You can look at company reviews See what type of questions they ask in the interview Or even see salary information This is vital information to help you make decisions and to prepare for the interview
  19. Linked In is mandatory – see who you know in the company Get information on the company, hiring practices, community involvement, new products and projects, competition (similar companies) And most importantly, it offers you the opportunity to connect with the company – consider following on Linked in just as you would on Twitter, Face Book or Pintrest (or any of their other social media)
  20. Take time to develop and nurture your network because you can use your network to help you navigate the job search process. Your network can provide you with information that can help you know whom to approach with your documentation (address your correspondence) They can open doors for you with the companies you are interested in They can introduce you opportunities that you were unaware of
