10. RESUMES
A winning resume uses language that mirrors the job posting, and includes
verbatim words that will jump out at the recruiter (e.g., if a company’s website
says its employees go “above and beyond” on their clients’ behalf, use “above
and beyond” to explain your commitment to business relationships).
The best resumes are also usually formatted in reverse chronological order.
Resumes with a font size of 11 result in more interviews than ones with smaller
or larger type do.

11. INTERVIEW PREPARATION
Conduct research on the employer, hiring manager and job opportunity:
 Understand the employer, requirements of the job, the background of the
person (or people) interviewing you.
 The more you understand the employer, the better you’ll be able to answer
interview questions and ask insightful questions.
Dress for Success
 Plan out your wardrobe; fit the employer and its culture
 Strive for the most professional appearance
 Keep accessories/jewelry to a minimum
Arrive on Time (or Early)
 Be relaxed, prepared and positive
 Non-Verbal Presentation and Behaviors impact the impression you make:
 Make eye contact, actively listen – don’t slouch, play with a pen, fidget,
mumble or chew gum

Practice answering common interview questions
 Be prepared to answer what are your strengths and weaknesses

13. DURING THE INTERVIEW
 Be authentic, focused, confident, candid and concise
 Showcase your skills – you want to get to the next step
 Provide examples of solutions or accomplishments (sell yourself)
 DON”T badmouth a previous employer, boss or coworker

14. ADDITIONAL TIPS
Have a digital footprint, or they’ll be considered digitally illiterate.
Candidates who get interview requests may have the personal photos on
their Facebook profiles locked down, but their Twitter feeds are full of
interesting, relevant comments about their industry (even if they work in a
field like accounting).
Write opinion pieces or blog posts – which can be a great way to get your name to turn up in
an Internet search with job-boosting results. (Linked-In allows you to publish blog-style
content).
Connect with the recruiter on a personal level. That could mean that when they write back
confirming the interview, they might mention a small compliment about the person who
introduced them. Or, if it’s a last-minute request for a meeting the same day, they let the
recruiter know, in advance, that they wouldn’t normally wear jeans to an interview but that
they thought they didn’t have any meetings that day.
Don’t use Emoticons to express your enthusiasm: Use an honest and specific sentence about
why you are excited about the opportunity should you get that request for an interview.
