Experiential Transcoding…
• Experiential transcoding aims to transcode web pages into
more accessible forms based on the understanding of
user’s experience.
• Focus on eyetracking based experiential transcoding.
• Improve interaction of disabled and mobile web users.
• What is the effect?
3/11
Findings!
• Even though our participants performed better with
transcoded web pages, our study shows that “old habits
die hard”!
• Although people are not satisfied with their current small
screen device web browsing support, they still manage to
use it and look for similar support in transcoded versions.

User Study Details…
• Hypothesis
– Participants who performed tasks on transcoded pages are more
satisfied with their performance and system, in terms of task
completion, system usability, information quality and interface
quality.
• Materials
– Six web pages in 3 complexity group: apple, babylon, yahoo, avg,
godaddy and BBC.
• Measurement
– Used the After-Scenario Questionnaire (ASQ);
– The Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire: system usefulness
(SYSUSE), information quality (INFOQUAL) and interface quality
(INTERQUAL).
• Procedure
– Task based: Browsing tasks and searching tasks

• Although people are not satisfied with their current small
screen device web browsing support, they still manage to
use it and look for similar support in transcoded versions.
• A more individualised transcoding might be better - need
to investigate further!

Editor's Notes

  • #3 There has been significant research on transcoding but so far the focus has been on using the content as input to transcode web pages. However, there is not much research in understanding the effect of experiential transcoding…. How can we achieve experiential transcoding? For experiential transcoding, we need to be able to understand and predict users’ needs and requirements but how can we do this? We use eye-tracking data but we can possibly use: Log data on servers? User’s interaction patterns? Coping strategies? Mining daily activities, etc.
  • #6 They both had similar support: Original web page prototye: zoom in/out/pinch gesture Transcoded version: move element by element and also get a list of visual elements. A single element was presented in the default view.
  • #7 Administration: the study was conducted at METU Ankara campus. All participants took part in their daily lives, library, technopark, etc. Procedure: Part one - consent form Part 2: demographic questionnaire: age, gender, web usage frequency, etc. Part 3: UI study, participants were asked to browse and see if they find something interesting and for searching they were asked to complete a specific task, BBC: can you read the first news item in the sports section?
  • #8 We conducted the study with 50 participants %50 female and %50 male
  • #9 There is no statistical difference between the responses to the items in the questionnair, however all transcoded versions were higher.
  • #10 People agree more strongly on transcoded versions the results are still not statistically significant.
