Volcanoes are cone-shaped landforms with an opening at the top or sides that allow hot, thick clouds of gas, molten rock, and ash to escape. According to PHIVOLCS, volcanoes are classified as either active if they have erupted within the last 600 years or 10,000 years ago based on analysis, or inactive if they have not erupted in over 10,000 years and are being eroded through weathering.
