Hamiltons Gallery is proud to host such a spectacular exhibition
of Vivian Maier works. She died without knowing her work had
been found and auctioned off for nothing. So this is bring to life
her lost work and give the public a chance to see what an
amazing photographer she was. As her work is spread all over
the US and is owned by many people it took a lot of work and
time to source these images, but we felt so strongly that they
needed to be viewed by the public.
The exhibition consist of 7 of her images some taken in America,
other in Europe and some are unknown. Her work falls under
the genre of street photography. These images are not for sale.
The collection of images depict many different people from all
works of life.
Vivian Dorothea Maier was born in New York, USA on 1st
February 1926 , but grew up in France. Her occupation was as a
full time nanny, photography was just a hobby of hers she is
considered an amateur American street photographer. She never
published or sold any of her images but stored it. Vivian was
spoken of as a very secretive and private woman who kept to her
self . Her work was not discovered until she fell ill and ran out of
money while in hospital meaning the contense of her storage
units where she kept her images was sold . But she died before
finding out on 21st April 2009 in Chicago Illinois.
