Linear and Rotary Motions
Grade 5 Science - Let's Learn How Things Move!
What is Motion?
• 🔹 Motion is when something moves.
• 🔹 It means a change in position over time.
• 🔹 We see motion every day: walking, running, cars, fans.
Why Learn About Motion?
• ✅ To understand how things move.
• ✅ To build machines and tools.
• ✅ Motion is used in sports, travel, and science!
Two Main Types of Motion
• Linear Motion - movement in a line.
1 ️
1️⃣
• Rotary Motion - spinning in a circle.
2️⃣
What is Linear Motion?
• ➡ Moves in a straight or curved line.
• ➡ The object moves forward or backward.
• ➡ Example: Car on a road, rocket flying.
Types of Linear Motion
• 📏 Rectilinear Motion - straight line (e.g., sliding box).
• 🎯 Curvilinear Motion - curved path (e.g., thrown ball).
What is Rotary Motion?
• 🔄 Spins or turns around a center point.
• 🔄 Object stays in place but rotates.
• 🔄 Examples: Fan, clock hands, bicycle wheels.
Rotary Motion Examples
• 🌀 Washing machine drum
• 🕰 Clock ticking
• 🌍 Earth rotating on its axis
Compare Linear & Rotary Motion
• 🔹 Linear: Moves forward/backward (e.g., train).
• 🔸 Rotary: Spins around a point (e.g., fan).
• 💡 Both are important in machines!
Motion in Everyday Life
• 🚗 Car driving = Linear
• 🧺 Fan spinning = Rotary
• 🚀 Rocket launch = Linear
• 🍽 Blender blade = Rotary
Let's Practice - Guess the Motion!
• 1. Clock hands → ________
• 2. Arrow flying → ________
• 3. Helicopter blades → ________
• 4. Sliding door → ________
Quick Recap!
• ✔ Motion = movement
• ✔ Linear = straight or curved path
• ✔ Rotary = circular around a point
• ✔ You see motion everywhere!
🎉 Thank You!
You did an awesome job! Any questions?
