This presentation was delivered at the CESI Conference, Dublin 4th March, 2017. The theme of the conference was Making Connections: Transformation Through Technology and Teamwork. The objective of Connecting the Unconnected invites teachers to go back to basics and to reflect on the primary function of learning, which is the relationship between the teacher and student. The presentation suggests that technology and learning will only be successful when we as teachers truly understand the communities we are tasked to serve.
The Secret to Actually Producing Great Visual StorytellingLeslie Bradshaw
It's 2014 and there is no question that visual storytelling is an important tool in every marketer's tool belt. However, how to swiftly produce consistent, cost-effective and beautiful work is a lot less obvious. To arm you with the methods, resources and workflows you need to win at visual storytelling, we've asked marketer and data visualization pioneer Leslie Bradshaw to share her playbook. In her own words the session will deliver: Less hype. More do.
We all know the concept of the elevator pitch, where you pitch your idea between two floors in an elevator.
Visual + words are even more powerful together and that is the essence of this talk given at CIID Open Lecture.
It is all about how you explain your ideas better , how to make sure people remember them and how to gain shared knowledge faster and more efficient.
...And that is by drawing simple pictures to visualise your ideas.
Storytelling with Data - See | Show | Tell | EngageAmit Kapoor
Stories have been recognized for their power of communication & persuasion for centuries and we need to operate at that intersection of data, visual and stories to fully harness the power of data.
I take your through a short tour of the science and the art of visualization and storytelling. Then give you an introduction through examples and exemplar on the four different layers in a data-story: See - Show - Tell - Engage.
Used in the session on Business Analytics and Intelligence at IIM Bangalore in July 2014.
Data Storytelling: The only way to unlock true insight from your dataBright North
Data visualisation is failing. Many businesses are relying on tools like Excel and PowerPoint to deliver an engaging data story without first establishing the plot. Bright North's latest whitepaper explains why Data Storytelling is the only way to unlock true insight from your data and lists five steps you can take to give your data story a happy ending.
Running up to their big Storytelling Lab Day this October, Ogilvy London asked some of its key partners to come in and talk about the many different aspects of storytelling week-by-week in the form of a Lab Lunch. This week JESS3 presented Visual Storytelling with Data to the Ogilvy team.

A SNAP OF INTIMACY: INVESTIGATING PHOTO SHARING PRACTICES ON SNAPCHAT AND INSTAGRAM
Paper presentation at AoIR 2016,
The 17th Annual Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers, Berlin, Oct 7 2016
This document offers an overview of the Story Bridge method, including its key elements, featured projects, and team profile.
Story Bridge combines art and science to establish the practice of social transformation and peace within and across communities. Developed by Dr. Richard Owen Geer with a team of distinguished artists, scholars and scientists, Story Bridge uses true personal stories and creative expression to engage deep dialogue, enable authentic relationship building, and facilitate individual and community transformation. Through an organic process of Story, Performance, Affinity, Conversation and Engagement, it weaves the community into a more generative web that enables self and collective transcendence. It has been practiced in the U.S. and around the world for over 25 years.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

then you go out, and you don’t
know what’s going to happen,
whether you’re going to be
broke.”
“I live at home and I’d like to
move out but then I can’t do
that on just a McDonald’s
wage, or I could, but I’d be
stuck in that job forever.”
“The debt just hangs there like
a black cloud.”
3. “I want to commission a student illustrator to create four ‘visual vignettes’ (like
grown-up comic strips) based upon the findings from the SRHE project to tell the
story of the findings in a more human, succinct and accessible way, which will aid
wider public engagement with the research. The resulting visual vignettes will be
uploaded to the University’s website and linked to the full research report. This
will allow the research findings to be disseminated to a wide, international
audience via micro-blogging tools such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.”

Call for Proposals
November 2015
I submitted a proposal to carry
out an impact strategy.
I budgeted £1500 to employ
an artist.
Plus £300 for printing.
4. Met with Course Leader
for BA Cartoon & Comic
Arts in January 2016.
Met his 30 final year
students and set a live
selection brief to recruit
an artist.
Gave the students two
anonymised interview
transcripts. They were
tasked with turning each
into a one-page comic
strip .
Four student artists
responded to the selection
brief.

6. Four students. Different styles. Alternative visual interpretations.
This developed my ‘graphic imagination’. I revised my plan.
From four ‘visual vignettes’ to a full comic book.
I employed all four students artists.
7. Turning eight interview transcripts and the research report into a comic book.
Storyboards and script writing.
Researcher and artists working together.
Negotiating the graphic representations.
Ongoing processes of interpretation.
Seeing the research through student artists’ eyes.
8.
9. I’d allowed four months to make the comic.
It took six months.
Support and flexibility was important.
We were all learning.
