This document discusses scientific illustrators and their role in communicating complex scientific concepts visually. It profiles three illustrators - Barth van Rossum, Anna Tanczos, and Nik Papageorgiou - and their journeys from scientific backgrounds to careers in scientific illustration. Van Rossum illustrates molecular processes, Tanczos founded SciComm Studios to produce science animation and illustrations, and Papageorgiou uses humor and cartoons in his Upturned Microscope blog to discuss the culture of academia. The challenges discussed include balancing artistic freedom with scientific accuracy, understanding clients' needs, and mixing science with humor. Advice includes learning software skills, starting small, and slowly building a portfolio before transitioning fully to scientific illustration.
User experience researchers can learn from Sherlock Holmes' investigative methods. The five steps are: 1) Understand the problem, 2) Collect facts through observation, 3) Develop hypotheses, 4) Eliminate unlikely hypotheses, 5) Act on the solution. Researchers should focus on the problem, gather all possible data without assumptions, analyze the data to understand user needs, test solutions, and provide evidence-based recommendations to stakeholders. Applying detective skills like thorough investigation and eliminating unlikely theories can help researchers arrive at effective solutions.

This document summarizes a student project that analyzed speech data to predict schizophrenia using machine learning algorithms. The students collected speech data from schizophrenic and healthy individuals over two days. They tested logistic regression, naive Bayes, random forest, decision tree, and OneR algorithms on the data. Logistic regression performed best, accurately predicting schizophrenia from emotions data over 80% of the time. The small dataset size was a challenge, and future work could involve implementing support vector machines and obtaining a larger dataset.

The document discusses virtual reality and immersive storytelling. It provides examples of using VR to tell journalistic stories about important issues like the refugee crisis. The New York Times created several VR projects, including "The Displaced" which allowed viewers to gain a deeper understanding of the refugee experience. The document discusses how VR can increase empathy and how elements of storytelling like character and narrative can be effectively incorporated into immersive VR experiences.
The document discusses the benefits of pure research over theory-driven or commodified design. It argues that pure research, like the experiments conducted at the Bauhaus, allows for unconstrained exploration that can lead to innovative discoveries. Two examples are provided: Pasteur's accidental discovery of antibodies while experimenting with pathogens and chickens, and Durkheim's sociological study of suicide rates. The document proposes that communications design should incorporate pure research through exploratory projects done independently or collaboratively, with findings published to share knowledge with other practitioners. Possible projects mentioned include exploring meaning creation through "syntactigrams" that play with language and visual signifiers.
Kim Solez Introduction to Tech&Future of Medicine course 8 Jan 2013Kim Solez ,
The technological singularity occurs when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and rapidly improves itself in a self-reinforcing cycle. As machines become smarter than humans, they take over technological development, advancing at an exponential pace that is difficult for humans to comprehend or predict. Each new generation of AI appears faster than the previous one. From this point on, the future is determined by machines rather than humans.

Dr. James Broselow recognized the need for tools to safely treat critically ill children after becoming nervous treating his first pediatric emergency room patient in the 1980s. He developed the Broselow Tape, the first length-based dosing tool, and color-coded crash carts to standardize pediatric emergency treatment. Realizing the limitations of the tape, Dr. Broselow started eBroselow to create digital solutions like SafeDose Scan, a barcode medication administration system that calculates accurate dosages to significantly reduce medication errors in pediatric patients. Dr. Broselow now works as a Patient Safety Movement Foundation ambassador to spread awareness of existing tools and best practices to eliminate preventable medical errors and deaths.
The document discusses whether high school athletes should be paid millions of dollars. It notes that only about 2% of high school athletes receive sports scholarships, so most should not expect to make money from sports. It argues that while professional athletes make millions annually, sports are recreational activities, so making more than important jobs like teachers and firefighters is not reasonable. Paying high school athletes millions could lead athletes to lose motivation when the work is no longer proportional to compensation.

What if we were truly open to the language in our cities, our neighborhoods, our city blocks? What is our environment telling us to do?
In this workshop, we’ll let the language of the city guide us to explore how words, specifically the words of our immediate contexts, shape our behavior. By being open to the possibilities, we’ll explore how language influences both the micro and macro actions we take. We’ll go on expeditions in the morning—studying street signs to doorways to receipts—comparing patterns in the language maps we’ll construct. In the afternoon, we’ll look at what these patterns suggest for the products and services we design.
You’ll walk away having learned how words influence behavior, how products and services have used language for behavior change, and having tools for thinking about language and behavior change in the work you do.
Spend the day letting words use you, so you can go back to work to use them with renewed wisdom.
