This document discusses several techniques used in visual composition including how facial expressions and body language convey a character's emotions, the difference between a demand and offer in framing and eye contact, how vectors guide the eye through an image, the relationship between foreground and background, and conventions for placing important elements in the center, with larger size, or centrally located in an image.

2. • The bodies and faces of characters
give away their emotions.
• They allow us to see what a
character is doing and how they are
feeling.

3. • If a character is looking
straight at us, this is a
DEMAND. They are forcing
our attention towards
them.
• If a character is not looking
at us, or there is no
character, this is an OFFER.
We are free to look at the
image in any way we
choose.

4. • A vector is a line in an image that
leads our eye from one item to
another.
• A vector can be horizontal or
vertical. It may be a straight,
curved or broken line.

5. • The foreground is the part of the
image that is closest to us (it is
often the more important part of
the image)
• The background is the part of the
image that is furthest away from us
(usually less important). It shows
us the setting of the image.

6. • Often, the things that are placed in the centre of
the image are the most important (this is where
we naturally look first).
• The bigger an object is, the more important it is.
• The things on the sides and the smaller objects are
usually meant to be less important.
