With the ever increasing growth of mobile applications and API technologies the topics of identity management, authentication and authorisation are as important as ever. The technologies mean that those responsible for identity management and security increasingly have more to consider when deploying and enforcing security. With rapid time to market demands from the business there is much to consider when delivering an open but secure environment for the business and their users. This session will look at some of the considerations and issues faced in designing and delivering IdM in this emerging space. We will look at how topics such as OAuth, OpenID connect and single sign on play their part in these policies and how governance plays a key role alongside security to protect the environment.

API abstraction is the separation of cross cutting concerns related to the api to better enable externalization to architectural concerns. Not only does this enable easier externalization, synchronization and sharing of the environment with external architecture but this also enables us to reload the api configuration on the fly, have DRY'r code, easier batching, api chaining, reduced code, synchronized configuration/security, reduced throughput and much more. IO State In Distributed API Architecture

The API pattern bind IO functionality to business functionality by binding IO state either through annotation (ie JAX) or by extending a RestfulController. As a result, the data associated IO State cannot be shared with the architectural instances because it is bound to the controller. This creates architectural cross cutting concerns not only with the functionality but also with the data. By abstracting the functionality, we can create a versioned data object for IO state that can be shared,cached,synced,reloaded on the fly for all architectural instances without having to restart any instance. This greatly improve automation, performance and flow of api applications and architecture.

APIs are a piece of technology, but they do have a business purpose and a user, or rather a developer experience which makes them either good or horrible to use and develop. Without great business-oriented APIs, there can be no API economy. In general lean architecture methods exist but are not used enough. They are useful for DevOps and Agile development, but APIs need special attention. There is a need for a “double loop” of DevOps with APIs, that’s one thing. The more important thing is to use methods which help you to treat your API as a product while covering all important business model and architecture areas. Discussions and collaboration is the key to any successful architecture. Still, many of us design our APIs and software in endless meetings or alone, using no methods at all or methods and language known only by IT professionals. The world could do with a lot of better API designs which translate into better business. These were all reasons to develop the creative-commons licensed open and lean APIOps Cycles method (www.apiopscycles.com). This talk tells the basics of the method, plus some examples of how companies have used it.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

8. Clearly, to get such visibility, we have to collect lots of data. Before we go to the data part of it, can you give examples of what such visibility might tell us?
