This paper presents an immersive geo-spatial social media system for virtual and augmented reality environments. With the rapid growth of photo-sharing social media sites such as Flickr, Pinterest, and Instagram, geo-tagged photographs are now ubiquitous. However, the current systems for their navigation are unsatisfyingly one- or two-dimensional. In this paper, we present our prototype system, Social Street View, which renders the geo-tagged social media in its natural geo-spatial context provided by immersive maps, such as Google Street View. This paper presents new algorithms for fusing and laying out the social media in an aesthetically pleasing manner with geospatial renderings, validates them with respect to visual saliency metrics, suggests spatio-temporal filters, and presents a system architecture that is able to stream geo-tagged social media and render it across a range of display platforms spanning tablets, desktops, head-mounted displays, and large-area room-sized curved tiled displays. The paper concludes by exploring several potential use cases including immersive social storytelling, learning about culture and crowd-sourced tourism.
Drones have recently received a lot of media attention for their use as a surveillance tool. Their utility for video and still aerial photography is undeniable, but legislation threatens to restrict the use of drones even for scientific purposes. But kites are rarely subject to the same restrictions, even if they are used for similar purposes. Additionally, kites fly in windy conditions that would ground a drone and flight times are limited by arm muscle endurance, not by battery life. Processing the photos from either a drone or a kite, however, follows largely the same workflow. I will present a low-cost aerial photography platform that uses a kite to lift the sensors and discuss free and open source photo processing options including stitching and georeferencing.

Virtual en Augmented Reality kom je overal tegen. In tourisme, de zorg, het onderwijs en bedrijfsleven. Met al die verschillende toepassingen headsets en platformen zie je door de bomen het bos niet meer. Virtual Reality (VR) maakt het delen van beleving mogelijk. Kijk rond in een omgeving en ervaar hoe het is om daar te zijn. Augmented Reality (AR) voegt juist informatie en objecten toe aan de werkelijke wereld. Bij Mixed Reality hebben de virtuele objecten interactie met de werkelijke wereld. Zo kan een object achter een bank, verstopt zitten etc. Deze technieken gaan samen komen en gaan de wereld van trainen, opleiden en therapie veranderen en noemen we in deze koopgids Extended Reality (XR).

Docenten bouw, ICT en techniek van de vestigingen Drachten, Emmeloord, Leeuwarden en Sneek werken als interne deskundige voor Centrum Duurzaam. ‘Elke docent is expert in zijn eigen vakgebied en pakt actuele duurzame ontwikkelingen op en vertaalt deze samen met bedrijven naar levensecht onderwijs voor onze studenten. In dit nieuwe schooljaar staat SMART centraal waaronder Augmented Reality en Virtual Reality’. Woensdag 26 januari 2022 verzorgde Ewout Warringa van XRlearning een eerste kennismaking met Extended Reality. ‘Vandaag willen we kennismaken met Extended Reality in het beroepsonderwijs. We willen ideeën opdoen om Extended Reality toe te passen in het eigen vakgebied’.

61. This research project integrates the development, assessment, and case study
implementation of a participatory urban planning system for the City of Hamilton (Virtual
Hamilton). It will utilize an online 3D virtual world with integrated social media to facilitate
stakeholder visualization, multiuser content contribution, and communication. As digital
technologies have come to shape the city and the daily lives of its citizenry, it is timely and
necessary that the means by which we envision the future city is enabled by these same
technologies. The changing nature of the city in the digital age, the availability of rich GIS
data sets, Web 2.0, and open source online collaborative virtual worlds, suggest that a key
challenge in achieving greater citizen engagement and participation in urban planning
decisions is how to best leverage both the social and
technological opportunities implicit in these conditions. The Virtual Hamilton research
partnership addresses this challenge through the design, testing and implementation of a
publicly accessible, user-friendly community planning and visualization system. Virtual
Hamilton will integrate community knowledge contribution features via social media, and
GIS and municipal planning data input, with an open source virtual environment for city
modelling.
