The rise of mobile and cloud has empowered more front office workers to take control over their own IT destiny. This study answers the question “is IT equipped to handle the implications of this shift?”
Unified communications and collaboration tools have the power to accelerate productivity and bring people together, however, most UC implementations fail to live up to expectations. This study reveals where most organizations go wrong when it comes to UC and collaboration, and what they can do to boost user adoption, productivity, and work satisfaction.
A Softchoice survey of 1,000 full-time people in North America found employees who use SaaS apps for work are developing bad tech habits that expose their organizations to security breaches and data loss.
Our report summary provides an in-depth exploration of how SaaS is adding a new element of risk to the way we work, and what IT departments can do to eliminate bad user behavior in the cloud.
In 2014, cloud computing was still shifting into the enterprise mainstream. Back then, Softchoice commissioned a study that discovered North American workers who use cloud apps displayed markedly more reckless technology habits and were more likely to put their employers’ networks and corporate data at risk.
Two years later, most organizations have gone from flirting with the cloud to wholesale adoption, yet despite their new level of cloud sophistication – not much has else changed! From lax password security to rogue IT behavior, North American workers are (Still) Careless Users in the Cloud.
We commissioned a study to understand how cloud application adoption impacts the workplace engagement and satisfaction of 1,000 full-time employees in the United States and Canada.
The deluge of devices and cloud apps (SaaS) into our personal and professional lives is feeding the notion that workers are overwhelmed with too much technology, tipping the scales of work-life balance and ultimately making
us less engaged with work.
Based on the findings in our survey, we found the contrary.
In this Softchoice research study, we explore trends in employee productivity and collaboration, including the use of office automation tools, remote work flexibility, and how well organizations equip their people with the technology they need to be productive. Softchoice surveyed 1,000 full-time North American office workers who use a computer or mobile device for the majority of their work day.
Softchoice, a leading North American provider of IT solutions and managed services, surveyed 1,000 full- time line-of-business (LOB) employees and 250 IT decision-makers across the U.S. and Canada to uncover how many workplaces actually walk the walk when it comes to having the right processes, leadership, culture and technology to drive innovation.
Today, security is so much more than just a firewall. As we saw in our recent webinar, co-hosted with Microsoft to discuss their new Enterprise Mobility + Security Suite (EMS), breaches are resulting from weak end-user passwords or error, as well as a lax attitude toward SaaS and third party "Shadow IT." Add to that infrastructure complexity brought on by cloud and hybrid environments and everything you knew about security is changing.

Cybersecurity breaches in the government seem to be all over the news. The sheer number and wild variety of sources for these breaches led us to wonder what federal agencies are really dealing with. SolarWinds® partnered with leading government research provider Market Connections to survey 200 federal IT and IT security professionals to find out their top cybersecurity concerns and the obstacles they face when implementing IT security strategies.
The results of our survey include:
Detailed insight into the threats, challenges, and sources of cybersecurity breaches the government faces in its IT infrastructure
Top hindrances in the implementation of appropriate IT security tools
Strategies and courses of action being deployed by federal IT professionals to remediate cybersecurity threats
These results demonstrate that a broad and concerning range of cybersecurity threats plague government agencies. Federal IT pros must consider taking a more pragmatic and unified approach to addressing the availability, performance, and security of their infrastructures.

How Intelligent Operations Enables Proactive Data Center ManagementITOutcomes
CIOs often live and die by the data center’s performance and availability numbers.
Nine out of 10 respondents to a 2014 survey of data center professionals showed that service availability is highly critical to their performance.
But at the same time, 41 percent of organizations missed their service availability goals for mission-critical systems in 2013. Not surprisingly, organizations with higher service availability goals were significantly less successful in meeting their goal.
But here’s a new way of thinking about improving data center metrics: IT departments should no longer be concerned with improving system performance and reducing downtime for its own sake. Rather, consider these as metrics for enabling IT to deliver more of what the business needs, when it needs it.
In other words, it’s time to transform infrastructure and application measurements from tactical to strategic metrics.

DRIVERS AND IMPEDIMENTS TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION - THE RESEARCHTom Rieger
In August 2020 EnterpriseDB and Platform 3 jointly asked 1000s of IT professionals their perspectives and priorities. This paper is a detailed view of those results.
Despite a global IT spend of over $4 Trillion, 67% of CEOs & CIOs are misaligned on how IT should be enabling the business*.. With the dramatic increase in digital technology & the business’s appetite to understand and enable their own innovations through technology, CIOs are challenged with the need to rapidly understand business inputs, stakeholder satisfaction, and assess their own teams internal capabilities. Info-Tech has found too often this is done through ad-hoc and informal processes, making improvement hard to measure, and success impossible to define. A new model is needed to enable the CIO to rapidly make decisions, prove success & analyze challenges with DATA.
In this session Info-Tech will present how CIOs can overcome these challenges, and forge a new data driven approach to rapidly accelerate decision making, as well as measure the benefits of IT with DATA. Info-Tech will share insights from Info-Tech’s 3 year Stakeholder Satisfaction Study & how IT can enable transformation at unparalleled rates.
By the Numbers:
• 66% of CEOs don’t understand how to use IT to transform the business.
• 84% of IT Organizations score below 80% on IT satisfaction
• 43% of CIOs overestimate the size of their next budget.
• 78% of CEOs/CIOs are aligned on what IT issues impede innovation BUT are Highly Misaligned on the Business Barriers that Impede Innovation
• 72% of business leaders misjudge which services really matter to them

Application development and deployment in the traditional datacenter has been a challenge for many organizations primarily due to resource constraints. This has historically led to unfortunate compromises between functionality and security for business applications.
With public cloud providers, we have seen the limitations to technical capabilities fall away; the attainable to the Fortune 500 has become available to organizations of any size.
This yields some exciting new options for the development, deployment and operation of secure applications. Here you will find the presentation deck and recording of webinar.
Avoiding the unexpected costs of cloud computing. Without proper planning and governance, spending on cloud services can easily get out of control, putting your organization at risk of not realizing the benefits of moving to the cloud in the first place. This presentation helps you understand the frameworks and tools available to effectively manage and optimize cloud costs.
You’ll Learn how to: (1) develop and manage optimal cloud budgets (2) assign accountabilities and track usage (3) continuously improve cost performance.

Is there a correlation between Netflix and Adobe Creative Cloud? We think so. Adobe recently shifted to a cloud-based subscription model. They realized that b2b software was changing and they needed to adapt. It's not all that different to Netflix, which turned the entertainment industry on its head and blew Blockbuster out of the water. The question is, will you adapt like Adobe and move to Creative Cloud, or refuse to change and face the same fate as Blockbuster?
SQL Server 2016 is now in review! The newest version promises to deliver new real-time, built-in advanced analytics, advanced security technology, hybrid cloud scenarios as well as amazing rich visualizations on mobile devices.
There are many great reasons to move to SQL 2016, however if you are still working on SQL Server 2005 you may have another good motivator - the end-of-life clock of SQL 2005 is ticking down and support is about to end April 12, 2016.
In this deck we review the significant licensing changes introduced with SQL 2012. If our experience as Microsoft's Gold Certified Member has taught us anything - it is one thing. During migrations many of our clients get outright lost when trying to figure out the number of licenses they have or need. This often leads to under-deployment, and subsequently serious compliance issues with Microsoft. And yes, in some cases over-deployment means big savings back to your department.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Virtual Space Race: How IT with The Right Stuff Creates a Competitive Advantage
1. THE VIRTUAL SPACE RACE
How IT with The Right Stuff creates a competitive advantage
A STUDY BROUGHT TO YOU IN PARTNERSHIP BY
2. The rise of mobile and cloud has empowered more front office workers to take control
over their own IT destiny. This study answers the question “is IT equipped to handle the
implications of this shift?”
Demand for an agile, efficient IT infrastructure is at an all-time high, yet most organizations
lack the capacity to quickly deploy and manage applications on and off premises in response
to the needs of front office employees and customers.
Leveraging new technology to compete in the marketplace is a virtual space race, one in which
organizations with the right IT infrastructure have the competitive advantage to respond quicker
and plant their flag first in the market.
Methodology: Softchoice, one of the largest technology solutions and services providers in North America, partnered with VMware,
the industry-leading virtualization software company, to gauge enterprise IT departments’ responsiveness to the increasingly complex
technology demands of front office employees. They surveyed 250 IT managers and 750 line-of-business (sales, marketing, operations,
finance, etc.) managers across the U.S. to examine their expectations around IT department performance and IT infrastructure agility.
Introduction
3. From the Earth to the Moon
The gap between front office expectations and the
back office’s ability to deliver has never been so wide.
4. What is IT Thinking?
We asked IT managers to rank tasks based on what they
ideally would like to do and what they really do.
Ideal
1. Security
2. Maintenance
3. Strategy
4. Help Desk
Real
1. Maintenance
2. Security
3. Help Desk
4. Strategy
Ideally, IT Managers want to
spend more time on security
and strategic priorities, and less
time on maintenance.
In reality, they spend most of
their time on maintenance and
the least on strategy.

5. IT Managers
65% think their colleagues view them as a
help desk and not a strategic partner
55% think their colleagues view them as a
gatekeeper versus an enabler
70% spend less than 25% of their week
on strategic projects
28% think they should spend 25-50%
of their time on strategic projects
█
█
█
█
6. 80% see IT as a cost center versus a revenue generator
73% think app deployments should take less than a month,
while 25% expect it to take 1-5 days
57% think their organization should invest more in IT, and 3 out of
4 of them are willing to spend more of their own budget to do it
31% don’t involve IT when purchasing new software for their
department. Half of them said it’s because they have their own
technology budget
Front Office Managers
█
█
█
█
7. Not Ready for Launch
Most IT departments lack the right
infrastructure to take their
organizations to the next level.
8. Most organizations lack the IT infrastructure
needed to compete with the best-in-class.
61% virtualize less than half of their
IT environments
46% automate ¼ or less of the processes
associated with application rollouts
46% have no hybrid cloud capabilities
25% don’t have centralized management
of their IT environment
64% don’t have chargeback capabilities
█
█
█
█
█
9. Despite front office expectations for
instant gratification, IT often takes months
to deploy a new application.
30% take 1-6 months
28% take over 6 months
█
█
10. What you need to create a more agile,
efficient IT infrastructure:
Standardize and centralize infrastructure
that supports software-defined solutions
Virtualize your compute, network and
storage
Automate the apps in your data center
with scripts and policies
Connect your cloud infrastructure and
manage as one system
The Right Stuff
11. Gaining A Competitive Advantage
“One small step for IT, one giant leap for IT’s relevance.”
12. 4x more likely to deploy a new app within 5 days
2x more likely to move processing workloads across
servers the same day
3x more likely to accommodate front office requests
the same week
Compared to those that don’t, IT managers that have
the right* infrastructure are…
*Infrastructure that meets front office
employee needs from responsiveness and
capacity to connectivity and remote access.
█
█
█
13. 5x more likely to be very or extremely satisfied
with new software rollouts
5x more likely to believe IT spends plenty of
time on strategicprojects that support their
departments’ needs
Compared to those that don’t, front office managers
that have the right infrastructure are…
█
█
14. Managers that don’t have
the right infrastructure…
…are far more likely to think their organization
needs to increase its technology spend.
IT managers: 83%
Front office managers: 71%
However, at least half of those with
the right infrastructure still think
their workplace needs to spend
more on technology.
IT managers: 62%
Front office managers: 50%
15. Conclusions
Organizations with agile, efficient IT infrastructure can implement new processes
faster, respond quicker to employee and customer needs, and focus more on growth
and innovation.
Front office managers and executives are also far more likely to consider their IT
colleagues as strategically relevant to their overall success if they can support their growing
need to quickly implement, and seamlessly access, new work apps from anywhere.
Having the right IT infrastructure that is software-defined, centrally managed, highly
virtualized and highly automated is the key to winning the virtual space race.
