Carmen left her home country of Spain at age 21 in 1962 due to economic needs. She felt great pain leaving behind her family. Upon arriving in Switzerland, she was received politely but found living alone in a shelter difficult at first as she did not know the language. After becoming ill and losing her job, nuns helped her find work in nursing homes until she secured a long-term job at a hospital.
