1. THE WEIGHT OF SWEETNESS
No easy thing to bear, the weight of sweetness.
Song, wisdom, sadness. Joy: sweetness
equals three of any of these gravities.
See a peach bend
the branch and strain the stem until
it snaps.
Hold the peach, try the weight, sweetness
and death so round and snug
in your palm.
And, so, there is
The weight of memory:
Windblown, a rain-soaked
bough shakes, showering
the man and the boy.
They shiver in delight,
and the father lifts from his son’s cheek
one green leaf
fallen like a kiss.
The good boy hugs a bag of peaches
his father has entrusted
to him.
Now he follows
his father, who carries a bagful in each arm.
See the look on the boy’s face
as his father moves
faster and farther ahead, while his own steps
flag, and his arms grow weak, as he labors
under the weight
of peaches.
2. Early in the Morning
While the long grain is softening
in the water, gurgling
over a low stove flame, before
the salted Winter Vegetable is sliced
for breakfast, before the birds,
my mother glides an ivory comb
through her hair, heavy
and black as calligrapher’s ink.
She sits at the foot of the bed.
My father watches, listens for
the music of comb
against hair.
My mother combs,
pulls her hair back
tight, rolls it
around two fingers, pins it
in a bun to the back of her head.
For half a hundred years she has done this.
My father likes to see it like this.
He says it is kempt.
But I know
it is because of the way
my mother’s hair falls
when he pulls the pins out.
Easily, like the curtains
when they untie them in the evening.
18. Falling: The Code
1.
Through the night
the apples
outside my window
one by one let go
their branches and
drop to the lawn.
I can’t see, but hear
the stem-snap, the plummet
through leaves, then
the final thump against the ground.
Sometimes two
at once, or one
right after another.
During long moments of silence
I wait
and wonder about the bruised bodies,
the terror of diving through air, and
think I’ll go tomorrow
to find the newly fallen, but they
all look alike lying there
dewsoaked, disappearing before me.
2.
I lie beneath my window listening
to the sound of apples dropping in
the yard, a syncopated code I long to know,
which continues even as I sleep, and dream I know
the meaning of what I hear, each dull
thud of unseen apple-
body, the earth
falling to earth
once and forever, over
and over.
3. Eating Alone

The garden is bare now. The ...

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. And then one cold, wintry
night I was there again.
Standing helplessly on the
streets of the place I had
always longed to forget. The
place that never gave me
happiness but only a feeling of
sigh. The place I had never
wanted to come back to. But
still I was here just in case the
odds weren’t against me this
time. Hoping maybe, this time,
I find what I had lost here, “My
Happiness”.
3. I had been living in
London since I was a
child. But a time came
when there was
nothing else left there
that could hold me
back. My dad who was
a businessman and
worked in a
multinational
company died when I
was 13. After his death,
our economic
condition deteriorated
miserably. But the
worst was yet to come.
4. My mother was completely broken and she didn’t know what to
do next. We had no money, not even enough food to keep in our
bellies. My mother had started falling apart. And what followed
next gave me no reason to stay back. My mother... she left me
too...alone... forever. At the age of 14, I saw what a normal girl of
that age would never have imagined seeing. Neither did I, but
then I had to face it.
5. Since then I struggled to
make a living. I was
determined not to stay
back here at all.
Somehow after working
as a part-time worker in a
bakery I had money
enough for me to move to
New York. And I was
finally out of the cage. I
knew not what I was to do
next but I did know that
nothing else can be more
bitter coming up than
what I have already faced.
6. Time flew away with its mighty wings and the bad memories
seemed to have faded away. 10 years had passed and finally I was
learning to be happy. Until the day came that threw me back to
the same old memories I was just learning to forget.
7. I had started working as assistant manager in a sales company
and as a part of one of our projects I had to go to London. I never
wanted to go back, I had never ever imagined myself standing on
those streets stained with my parents’ blood again, I didn’t want
to breathe that air again that had once become a poison for me.
8. But then again we
are just meek
puppets tied to the
threads controlled by
our destiny. And so I
had made myself
bold enough to face
my fate.
9. The night was
bitterly cold, I
checked in at my
hotel where I had
to stay. I had a
meeting the very
next morning and I
wasn’t a type of girl
who would like to
get delayed and
give a wrong
impression to new
people, and so I just
lied on my bed and
dozed off.
10. The next morning, I got
up early and was ready to
leave for my meeting
when I saw a bouquet
kept at the table. I read
the message attached to
it.
For Miss Lia, thank you
for accepting the proposal
of our meeting and
travelling so far. - Adam
(Manager, Symphony
Sales & Co., London)
11. I was impressed. And the name, it looked strangely
familiar. Anyways it was a good start for the day and I
hoped that my meeting will go alright. I left for the
venue at 8: 30 A. M. sharp and reached there at 9: 00
A. M. after wandering and getting lost at all the similar
streets.
12. I was just about to enter the building when I dashed on someone
walking out of the door.
“Sorry!” I said.
“Oh, it’s alright. By the way are you Miss Lia? Umm...Adam here.” said the
man with a bold voice wearing a professional black suit and a
handsome personality.
“Yeah, it’s me. Sorry if I was late actually I got lost finding the streets!”
“Oh, absolutely no problem. You have actually reached on time. I must
say you are quite punctual!”
“Yes! Thank you!” I giggled.
The meeting was just perfect. It was the best presentation I had given in
my entire life! And fortunately enough we had won the contract.
13. As I was about to leave, Adam stopped me and requested me to have a cup
of coffee. I readily agreed.
But just then he opened his wallet and I noticed something, something that
made me go back through the years. It was a photograph and I could easily
figure out my parents, me and my best friend Adam out there.
WAIT! WHAT? Adam?
I was completely shaken. A lot of things were floating like clouds in my
mind. What if he was the same Adam that I had spent my entire childhood
with? The same Adam who was the only one I knew after my parents died?
The same Adam who wept when I left? This can’t be. It was so hard to
believe after so many years.
14. “Yes, it’s the truth, Lia. You aren’t dreaming.” Adam
said. I didn’t know what to say. I could feel the tears
running down my cheeks. I had never ever thought
that the place that broke all of my connections would
bring me back to those connections too. At the place
where my happiness was lost, I could see a ray of
hope and happiness shining through the horizon. I
could see my happy days coming back. I exclaimed
with happiness and hugged Adam tightly. I was
crying like crazy and he was laughing like a moron.
15. We both were so happy.
We went to the coffee
shop and enjoyed the day
to the fullest. I was finally
happy. Finally, after 10 long
years, I had found the
reason for my smile again!
And now deep in my heart,
I had finally accepted that
every tragic end is not the
end but just a new path of
Revival.
