6. - Attributed to Paul
- Gentile convert
from Antioch
- Paul mentored him
- Paul trusted him to
oversee church in Crete
- In Chapter 1 Paul reminds Titus of the mission,
encourages him in his faith and addresses
false teachings in the church
TITUS 2:1-8
7. As for you, Titus, promote the kind of living
that reflects wholesome teaching. Teach the
older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy
of respect, and to live wisely. They must have
sound faith and be filled with love and
patience. Similarly, teach the older women
to live in a way that honors God. They must not
slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead,
they should teach others what is good.
TITUS 2:1-3
8. These older women must train the younger
women to love their husbands and their
children, to live wisely and be pure,
to work in their homes, to do good,
and to be submissive to their husbands.
Then they will not bring shame
on the word of God.
TITUS 2:4-5
9. They (the older men) should be respected
not just because they have cultural authority
over the young but because the lives they live
inspire respect.
AFRICA BIBLE COMMENTARY
10. Older women were often objects
of ridicule in comedies and were
mocked for gossip and foolish talk.
BIBLE BACKGROUND…
11. If presbytēs is best understood as
a church officer then presbytis is best
understood not simply as "old woman"
but as a "female presbyter.”
WOMEN’S IVP COMMENTARY
12. In the same way, encourage the young men
to live wisely. And you yourself must be an
example to them by doing good works of every
kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity
and seriousness of your teaching. Teach the
truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized.
Then those who oppose us will be ashamed
and have nothing bad to say about us.
TITUS 2:6-8

15. Lynching became a white media spectacle, in
which prominent newspapers, like the Atlanta
Constitution, announced to the public the
place, date, and time of the expected hanging
and burning of black victims. Often as many as
ten to twenty thousand men, women, and
children attended the event. It was a family
affair, a ritual celebration of white supremacy,
where women and children were often given
the first opportunity to torture black victims….
JAMES CONE
16. Postcards were made from the photographs
taken of black victims with white lynchers
and onlookers smiling as they struck a pose
for the camera. They were sold for ten to
twenty-five cents to members of the crowd,
who then mailed them to relatives and friends,
often with a note saying something like this:
“This is the barbeque we had last night.”

17. Treat the world well.
It was not given to you
by your parents but lent
to you by your children.

if it was written to the
