Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHISTN 2017) only centre in Coimbatore
District. Annual Celebration “Attral” (Skill) – Cultural / Sports extravaganza for Special Children from
District.
2. Specific expertise or abilities which make
your NGO stand-out in the disability sector
 An Inclusive School - unique where Special Children participate in all the activities in the
Campus starting with assembly, competitions like quiz, cultural events, sports, yoga and
also on Founder’s day, etc. No special identity in events.
 52 of our Special students passed out and gainfully employed in various fields.
 Continuous Training to special teachers/primary teachers and visit of experts to prepare
for better education and training, both in Intellectual Disability and Specific Learning
Disability (SLD).
 The children do yoga which has improved their concentration and also improved in
controlling urine and motion functions. With the improved concentration, the
performance of the children improves in all aspects.
 Vidya Vikasini Opportunity School children have bagged several prizes in yoga and sports
competitions apart from Art and cultural events.
Vocational training programme for girls / boys as under:
Basic computing programme
Tailoring/cloth bag making (anti plastic drive - national agenda)
Bar code scanning and POS bill generation / computer aided designing
Printing and Note Book Binding – End to End
Photography
Beautician course
Vermicompost using cowdung residue after Biogas extraction
Catering assistance service
Enhance further facilities in Early Intervention Centre to minimise the disability very
early. Occupational Therapy/Sensory Integration - steps in that direction.
Vidya Vikasini Society (VVS) is a charitable Institution under which all activities of
Vidya Vikasini Opportunity School are carried out with donations to the Corpus
and donations for specific events under CSR from Voluntary Organizations and
Corporates. The surplus from VVS is applied in the activities of Vidya Vikasini
Opportunity School, a time tested model. Vidya Vikasini Matriculation School with a
strength of over 2100 is the mother!
To develop an Institution of Excellence in the field of SLD, also benefitting all Schools in
the region through awareness programme under RPWD Act 2016.
3. Goal for the next 3 - 5 years, how you intend
achieving them and how your organization will
be built for the plans and goals.
4. Challenges in your NGO or sector and how
would you address them?
• The Public / Government yet to accept the Intellectually
Disabled persons for jobs unlike visually impaired and
hearing impaired.
• Awareness and representations to be created to address this problem.
Vidya Vikasini Opportunity School plans to address this problem through
workshops and symposiums on RPWD Act, 2016 and invite teachers,
parents and public to be addressed by experts. Employing 10 ID persons
by Vidya Vikasini Society is leading by example. (including CP persons)
• Take up with Government through representation for higher
monetary compensation to parents of Intellectually Disabled
children especially mothers of EI as they are not able to work
elsewhere due to the children requiring attention full time.
• To approach Tamil Nadu Government for creating an Educational
Body for Open Schooling at State Level similar to NIOS, which
States like Telangana already have. This will help more Special
Children to clear the exams.
Goshala Project (Dairy Farming - 2014) is the Best Project
undertaken so far. Not ventured by any other NGO.
The inmates of the hostel are trained to take care of
Goshala in terms of cows / cleanliness, grazing, operate
Bio-gas unit, and co-ordinate with Veterinary doctor,
milking etc. as required including measuring milk.
Our experience has been very satisfying and rewarding, as
inmates develop a close relationship with the cows and have
compassion and look for specific symptoms in the cows. They call
them with affectionate names and some of them can even track
their lineage!
Starting with 2, we have a family of 22 (11 cows and 11 calves)
yielding close to 80Litres of milk which is used in the hostel and
also for supplying quality tea to our teachers in the campus /
canteen.
5. The Best Project your NGO has
undertaken so far, it’s uniqueness
and the learnings from that
experience
The Biogas has drastically reduced LPG consumption
contributing to energy conservation, a National objective.
The residual cow dung is used to manufacture
Vermicompost manure, a Project which Vidya Vikasini
Opportunity School is embarking upon with organic
farming.
The Goshala and Biogas unit is the model Vocational
Training centre recognised by the Prime Minister’s Skill
Development Programme and often visited by the students
and professors of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,
Coimbatore.
The Resource Room teaching for children with Specific
Learning Disability (SLD) is yet another contribution by us
to the Disability Sector and going forward this will be
offered to other Schools also.
