This document summarizes the design and results of a test rig to measure lift force generated by flapping wings. Numerical modeling was used to predict lift values based on wing geometry and motion parameters like frequency and angle of attack. An experimental test rig was designed and built with servo motors in the wings to control twisting instead of relying on flexibility. Force measurements from the rig were taken using a load cell as frequency and angle of attack were varied. Results showed that increasing frequency and angle of attack both increased lift force as expected based on the numerical predictions. The document provides context on bio-inspired flight and reviews other flapping wing projects to inform the design of the test rig.
This document presents information on X-Wind technology, an airborne wind energy system that uses tethered kites to harness wind power. Key points:
- X-Wind plants combine well-known technologies like kites, generators, and track systems to generate electricity from wind in a more efficient manner than conventional wind turbines.
- Kites are able to fly at higher altitudes where wind speeds are greater, allowing the systems to generate power over 90% of the time compared to 10-40% for traditional wind turbines.

Development and application of a simulation tool for vertical and horizontal ...Phuong Dx
This document describes the development and application of a simulation tool for vertical and horizontal axis wind turbines called QBlade. QBlade integrates several modules including airfoil analysis using XFOIL, lift and drag polar extrapolation, rotor blade design, and wind turbine performance simulation. It can be used to simulate and compare the performance of different vertical and horizontal axis wind turbine blade designs. The document presents two case studies using QBlade: investigating the effect of vortex generators on a vertical axis wind turbine, and analyzing the impact of helical blades and blade number on loads of a vertical axis wind turbine.
This document summarizes the design and testing of a fuel cell powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for low altitude surveillance missions. The UAV was designed with an aerodynamic glider configuration and powered by a 200 W polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system fed by a chemical hydride hydrogen generator, along with lithium polymer batteries. Bench and flight tests showed the hybrid power system enabled flight durations of nearly 4 hours. The document discusses the aircraft design process, onboard power system, results from testing, and lessons learned for optimizing long endurance fuel cell powered UAVs.
When it comes to offshore wind energy technology, most innovations are dedicated to foundations or construction techniques to lower LCOE by lowering CapEx and OpEx, but we are reaching an inflection point and AEP needs to be prioritized. Wind park controls and operations methods for revenue and power maximization being developed for onshore wind will be fundamentally necessary to leverage in order to drive maximum offshore LCOE benefit as the CapEx impact on reducing LCOE slows down in the coming years.

How Advanced Simulation will Impact the Offshore Industry both Now and in the...Altair
The easy days of Oil and gas extraction is over, and the ability to extract Oil and Gas from harsh enviornments is very dependent on the ability to overcome technical challenges through the use of advanced numerical analysis and simulation. Technical challalenges currently faced in the industry include High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT), Utra Deep Water (UDW) with water depths greater than 10,000 ft, and the Arctic with potentially 20% untapped hydro carbon reserves. These technical challenges are overcome through more use of advanced analysis and simulation, and this allows cost effective solutions to be obtained.
Also the Industry is currently being challenged by a low oil price, and lots of companies are forced to look at cost and schedule. This as a result, allows the opportunity for the use of advanced analysis to help solve Engineering challanges in an efficient manner and save potentially millions of dollars in the Engineering. The ways that this is undertaken is presented and discussed.
There are different types of Analysis simulation used in the Offshore Industry, for example FEA, CFD, Coupled Analysis etc. Also computer power is ever increasing in compuational efficiencies, and novel methods, such as the use of Cloud computing, has had a big impact on the way that analysis is undertaken. These different methods of software and hardware are discussed in relation to the Offshore Industry, and an indication is given in to how these methods will affect the Industry in the future.
Air Flow Test Bench A Senior Capstone ProjectGina Brown
This document describes a senior capstone project undertaken by mechanical engineering students at Western Kentucky University to design, build, and test an air flow test bench. The test bench was designed to measure airflow resistance of test specimens and performance of air moving devices over a flow range of 10-2000 CFM. It included major components like a variable speed blower, nozzle flow measurement device, housing plenum, flow straighteners, and data acquisition system. The project was funded by ASHRAE and followed standards to characterize performance of air devices and pressure drops for educational use in future mechanical engineering labs.
The TELFONA project aims to demonstrate natural laminar flow on a high aspect ratio aircraft wing. It involves designing, manufacturing, and testing two wing concepts - a Pathfinder Wing to calibrate transition prediction methods, and a Performance Wing to demonstrate the benefits of natural laminar flow at flight Reynolds numbers. The Pathfinder Wing design is complete and will be tested in early 2007 using pressure measurements, temperature sensitive paint and piezo-sensors. This will calibrate transition prediction methods to enable design of the Performance Wing, which will be tested in 2008. The overall goal is to provide data to validate natural laminar flow can reduce aircraft drag as envisioned in the ACARE 2020 targets.
This document discusses the development of a fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). It begins with an introduction comparing multi-rotor and fixed-wing UAVs and proposing a hybrid VTOL design. It then details the conceptual design process including weight estimation, airfoil selection, and preliminary sizing calculations. Next, it describes the preliminary and detailed design stages in Solidworks and validation of the design through computational fluid dynamics analysis in ANSYS Fluent. Finally, it summarizes that the methodology allows for the design of a fixed-wing VTOL UAV and concludes the design is ready for prototyping and flight testing.

Une meilleure compréhension du passé pour mieux éclairer le présent et imaginer le futur;
L’implication des citoyens pour inciter à la mise en mouvement;
Le management coopératif pour réussir à vivre et évoluer dans un monde complexe et tendre vers plus de résilience territoriale grâce à la coopération et à la collaboration;
Une communication sincère et ouverte face à des récits contradictoires issus d’une vérité collective;

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Practical examples and methodological guidelines will be provided to elucidate how AI can be effectively prompted to interpret and generate accurate XML markup.
Further emphasis will be placed on the role of AI in developing XSLT, or schemas such as XSD and Schematron. We will address the techniques and strategies adopted to create prompts for generating code, explaining code, or refactoring the code, and the results achieved.
The discussion will extend to how AI can be used to transform XML content. In particular, the focus will be on the use of AI XPath extension functions in XSLT, Schematron, Schematron Quick Fixes, or for XML content refactoring.
The presentation aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of AI usage in XML development, providing attendees with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions. Whether you’re at the early stages of adopting AI or considering integrating it in advanced XML development, this presentation will cover all levels of expertise.
By highlighting the potential advantages and challenges of integrating AI with XML development tools and languages, the presentation seeks to inspire thoughtful conversation around the future of XML development. We’ll not only delve into the technical aspects of AI-powered XML development but also discuss practical implications and possible future directions.

19. Towards increased efficiency of the propulsion system
Important challenges due to increased bypass ratio and stage loading
• Jet engine
• acceleration of high ingested air flow
• reaction force -> thrust
• Overall efficiency = thermal x propulsive
• thermal efficiency: fuel -> kinetic energy
• propulsive: kinetic energy -> thrust
• propulsive efficiency
• loss: remaining kinetic energy in the air after
aircraft passed
• more efficient to accelerate little a large
mass flow rate, since less loss of kinetic
energy
• thermal efficiency
• increasing pressure ratio of the cycle
• increasing maximum temperature
