Editor's Notes

  • #2 This is the 360 Data Management presentation, highlighting the data management challenges and our unique integrations
  • #3  There is a tremendous shift happening – a digital organization transformation. In fact, according to a recent McKinsey report, data flow has increased 45 times since 2005, and is projected to increase another 9 times in the next 5 years. The flow of information is estimated to have created $2.4T worth of GDP in 2014. To put it in a broader perspective today, this flow of data and information creates more economic value than the global goods trade. This digital transformation is having a profound effect on <how government and businesses work>– changing how people, devices and organizations interact. In fact, I spoke to one financial services firm in Asia that is spending $2B over the next 2 years on digital transformation. This goes well beyond cloud. And this trend will only accelerate across all organizations, including the US Federal Government.
  • #4 Here is a view of the products that make up each of these categories. Almost every business is going through some form of digital transformation, and is reliant on information in order to function. Whether you’re transforming the way you’re addressing your customers or your partners, mobilizing your workforce, having to manage private or regulated information, or just using data to make better operational decisions – timely access to relevant information is critical to success. So you could argue that your data is one the most critical assets you possess.  You can outsource your IT infrastructure, your real estate, even your workforce – but your data is the one thing you always need to own and manage yourself. It must be available anywhere/anytime, properly protected, compliant with regulations, and seen as a business enabler rather than deadweight. [EBC ice-breaker questions: “Where are you on this spectrum?”, “Do you use cloud services, digital processes, mobile apps?”, “Do you know where all your data is, whether it’s protected or compliant with regulations?”] And yet in our experience from talking to customers, most companies are not managing their information like a critical business asset. Far from using it for competitive advantage, it’s actually a business liability…
  • #5 In fact, other than your people, data is the most important asset you have. There are many things in the federal government that can be outsourced--your IT infrastructure (as cloud), your real estate (through leasing), even your workforce (utilizing contractors where appropriate) but your data is the one thing your agency always need to own and manage itself. It must be available anywhere/anytime, properly protected, compliant with regulations, and seen as a mission enabler rather than deadweight. And yet in our experience from talking to customers, most organizations are not managing their information like a critical mission asset. For many organizations, it’s far from advantageous, and may actually be a liability…
  • #6 Why is that? The challenge is that there too much Data, and not enough Information:   Digital transformation is generating huge amounts of data (44ZB in 2020, up 10x from today). Most organizations are just backing everything up and managing the growing pile without really knowing what they’ve got or reducing it. In fact, our data genomics study shows that on average 41% of enterprise data hasn’t been touched in 3 years, and 12% in over 7! Moreover, our studies show that only a tiny fraction (5% or less) of all that data is actually useful, so you could be carrying a huge unnecessary overhead and exposure to risk. It’s overwhelming IT organizations, who are mainly throwing more infrastructure at the problem – wrong approach.     So Information needs to be managed like the critical business asset that it is….
  • #7 Here is a view of the products that make up each of these categories. Veritas is a 360° provider for data management. This is a view of those capabilities mapped to our product portfolio. Starting in the Protection part of the wheel in the blue, we provide all the necessary infrastructure in all the technology environments to make sure that your data is Protected and Accessible: backing it up, providing it in various form factors, being able to do copy data management, and ensuring high availability to premise or to cloud. NetBackup, the leading B&R solution in the industry, is the foundation for many of the other products and technologies listed here. Velocity is our new data virtualization/CDM solution At the same time, we’re able to orchestrate heterogeneous workloads in the green section (Availability). That includes technologies such as Software Defined Storage (SDS) whether in conventional environments, across clouds, or in OpenStack environments. This provides not only high data availability for all classes of app, but the ability to move workloads around between those environments reliably and quickly, as needed for best optimization. Main product family here is InfoScale and more recently HyperScale for OpenStack. At the top left of this wheel we’re talking about Information Insight, where we enable new visibility into the data estate and want to become a System of Record that allows that data to be analyzed and to be safely policy controlled. <Again, Information Maps has the same federal caveat as Velocity, so please note for Scott> And underneath you can see another important concept – the Information Fabric. This is the ‘glue’ that ties everything together and allows the various technologies and products in the wheel to share services ‘under the covers’. You’ll be hearing more about this as we build out our Information Management Platform over the next few years.
  • #8 I am really excited to announce the launch of NetBackup 8.0 and how this becomes the foundation to what we are calling 360 Data Management. This is a big moment for me as the first major launch of NetBackup since Veritas became independent in February. It’s great to see how we have taken a step change towards our Vision of 360 DM with the introduction NBU 8 and key integrations with other Veritas data management technologies. I will spend 15 minutes with you explaining the integrations and exciting new features as part of the NBU 8.0 launch [Explain Enterprise Data Management needs] Enterprise Data Management is key for the digital business, where organizations will have many heterogeneous data sources all being accessed by various new services, lines of business and different functions. For any organization to transform their data into a strategic asset they need to provide core capabilities to address the<ir data> challenges These capabilities for Enterprise Data Management are:- Insight – Visibility is a prerequisite to identifying and classifying the huge volumes of information being stored. Insight provides actionable intelligence, reduces risk and allows you to manage information more effectively. Availability Government operations need to be online 24x7. Applications and data needs to be available at all times, and this availability is across differing infrastructure, <and across> private and hybrid clouds Protection--and finally Enterprise Data Management needs to ensure data is protected at all times, always safe, intact and accessible by the right people at the right times. [What is Veritas answer to these needs] So we believe the only way to manage the digital transformation in a scalable and manageable way is to apply these three capabilities in software in a consistent manner across all your data and we have been doing this for large and small organizations for over 20 years. We have provided solutions that Protect organizations data, at scale, ensuring data and applications are safe now matter where they travel. - We provide Information Availability – not just of data but the applications that create that data. Resiliency has long been a goal for <all of our>customers, but they’ve struggled with complexity and cost. Included in our Availability solutions is Software Defined Storage (SDS) whether in conventional environments, across clouds, or in OpenStack environments. This provides not only high data availability for all classes of app, but the ability to move workloads around between those environments reliably and quickly, as needed for best optimization And finally we provide Unique Insights to your information - where we enable new visibility into the data estate and want to become a System of Record that allows that data to be analyzed and to be safely policy controlled But we are going farther, and converging these capabilities. We call this convergence 360 Data Management, a 360 degree view of your data to manage it effectively in the digital world.

  • #13  Let me Segway back to our integration strategy, built on NetBackup (Unified Data Protetion) deployed as either SW or HW Appliance. Data Protection has a vast amount of value, a centralized copy of all your information assets and tracking this on a daily bases. As I mentioned before around the Databerg. There is a ton of information that is Dark, Old and Stale, why back this up? why treat all information equally? We have integrated the metadata into our Insight Technology called Information Map providing organizations Global Data Visibility of all their unstructured data within 24 hours. So the average enterprise could save over $15 million in NAS storage and backup costs over the next 5 years. Or over $1.2 million this year.   Savings in storage costs (if they delete) Savings in Backup costs (if they delete) Over 5yrs $13,887,550.72 $2,812,140.92 Year 1 $930,201.60 $310,067.20
  • #15 Now that you have shone the lights on the dark data, it is now time to optimize. Let’s look at providing Predicable Integrated Resiliency. The “always on” operational need access to application and data and create predictability is key to any IT organization. Data Protection allows you to restore your data, but in many instances if a disaster hits, you are interested in recovering your critical applications. This can be tricky to do, especially with multiple tiers, application, data bases and file stores. In NetBackup 8, we have integrated NBU with our Availability solution called Veritas Resiliency Platform. VRP + NBU Provides you a predicable way to recover our applications with a click of a button. The integration orchestrates the various steps, restoring data and applications from NetBackup and then ensuring the applications recovers and is online. Single Click DR…. In addition VRP allows you to do non-intrusive DR testing so that you can remain compliant or sleep easy that your agency will recover. This provides a consolidated view of all your Application recovery needs, and reduces complexity and COST
  • #17 Our final integration is all about rapid, optimized and secure access to information. Organizations have on average 13 copies of their data for various requirements, the developer for testing, the data scientist for information insights and copies for backup and DR. I am pleased to announce that with NetBackup 8 and integration to our Copy Data Management solution, one can integrate CDM with Backup, with no need to rip and replace your backup technology. The integration will reduce your copy data footprint by 90% and users can get direct secure access to your information (your backup information) dramatically speeding up their access. For example, it is common to take 4 hours to get data to a developer. Multiple teams needs to be involved with the integration. This same process takes less than 30 minutes –which is 7X faster.
  • #19 As you can see, the concept of 360 Data Management is able to comes together as NetBackup 8 is launched and provides that foundation/starting point to 360 Data Management. Federal agencies will be able to expand from unified data protection to 360 DM. This integration unlocks the hidden treasure of backup to be 360 DM. The backup data allows Global Visibility, Single Click Predicable App recovery and access to new users rapidly. FUTURE STATE NOTE: What is coming…> Deeper integration with Information Map & NBU – ability to predict outcomes for example under provisioned or over provisioned data. VRP integration to have expanded cloud migration support moving workloads etc and test DR in Amazon no need to spin up additional infrastructure, just use the cloud.
  • #22 How does it work? <CLICK> Trusted master relationships allow the source domain to validate each target domain’s configuration when the SLPs are created <CLICK> Backup A is created in a disk pool at the source data center and ia replicated to target data center 1 <CLICK> Backup B is created in the same disk pool at the source data center using a different SLP and is replicated to target data center 2
  • #24 Data is critical, but if you can’t access (or access it quick enough) that data it becomes worthless (less valuable) and your business grinds to a halt while costs dramatically rise. This slide is our declaration which ties the velocity story into the Veritas company story. Organizations are investing millions of dollars to store and maintain data, but if you can’t access that data within a reasonable timeframe, then you are spending a lot of money without gaining any real value. So while data is critical, the speed and efficiency in accessing that data is even more important as it significantly impacts the value of the data.
  • #25 Veritas Velocity enables organizations to quickly and easily provide authorized users access to copies of production data and greatly improve the speed, control, and predictability of any workflow or process dependent on those copies.  In order to do that, Veritas Velocity regularly and efficiently captures changed production data via NetBackup or directly from the source.  Collecting only changed data greatly reduces the impact on production workloads while allowing Velocity to keep the secondary copies in sync with production.  The data is then cataloged and published to a self service interface for users to easily find and request access to any point in time.  Users and/or teams are then provided space efficient, virtual copies of production data in secure, isolated sandboxes where activity can monitored for auditing. The sandbox can then be deleted, refreshed, bookmarked, and rolled back as necessary.
  • #28 - Policy Driven Storage Management - Global name space
  • #29  Cloud: Seamlessly migrate workloads to and from private and/or public clouds Performance: Billions of files with differing attributes Heterogeneity: Multiple storage architectures Data protection: Embedded NetBackup client Cost: Access is 60-70% less costly
  • #34 And with all of that, we would like to welcome you to take the next steps with us! (with Veritas) 1,2,3 steps Let’s work together to make sure that your Backup and Recovery Strategy is Ready for the Digital Revolution!!
