WE POSSESS
THE SPIRIT OF
VOLUNTEERISM
Prepared by:
Ms. Redgz T. Molidor
South Lakes Integrated School
2nd Quarter, SY 2022-2023
OBJECTIVES
Explain that human acts are voluntary when
they are done willingly and guided by our
knowledge
Discuss the importance of volunteerism to the
community
Recognize that doing volunteer work can help
improve our well-being
THE CONCEPT OF
VOLUNTEERISM
VOLUNTEERISM
It is a form of community spirit that encourages
participation. In the Filipino context, it is deeply rooted
in our values as expressed in neighborly concerns.
In an age where every form of service is usually
compensated with monetary fee, volunteerism
provides an opportunity to do service for the sake of
community welfare beyond one’s self-serving motives.
VOLUNTEERISM
means doing service wholeheartedly and without
expecting a reward or payment for it.
The desire to volunteer is an example of a
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
We, as humans, are expected to treat other
creations right and with respect.
LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND
“Walang Iwanan”
Bayani Challenge is an annual Gawad Kalinga
program, which started in 2006. The main
objective of the Bayani Challenge is to bring out
the hero in everyone. This is to give several
opportunities to generous individuals to share their
time and work together in helping the poor raise
their quality of living.

What is a Volunteer?
A volunteer is... __________________________

CL Book, page 67
VOLUNTEER
• First recorded during the 1600s
• Came from military context, from Middle
French, voluntaire, which means a person who
offers himself for military service
• Coincides with the word community service
which denotes offering oneself in order to
serve the community
“Volunteers don't get paid,
not because they're worthless,
but because they're priceless.”
~ Sherry Anderson
VOLUNTEERISM
IN THE
COMMUNITY
VOLUNTEERISM
involves the initiative to start making things happen.
When people volunteer, they offer not only their
service but also their time and energy. Most of the
time, they are not paid a monetary fee. Instead, they
feel rewarded by the feeling of having done something
good to others and the world.
Valuing a Virtue
It is a virtue which
pertains to the giving
of self to others by
aiding and helping
those who are in need.
SERVICE
Answer the following questions:
1. How do you think volunteerism affects the relationship
of people in the community?
2. Is it possible that our contributions and services to
others can significantly contribute to the future of a
community and its members? Why?
3. How do you think people would feel if they volunteer
to help and are paid for their service?
CL Book, page 71
BENEFITS
OF
VOLUNTEERISM
One important feature of volunteerism is
initiative. According to Lao Tzu, “The journey of
a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
He means that people should be self-motivated
and this self-motivation is expressed as one’s
initiative. A person who initiates without external
promptings has the motivation to participate.
Civic groups who care for their community and
society initiate programs and advocacies to deal
with the pressing needs of communities.
Benefits of Volunteering
◂ Volunteerism creates the
starting point of anything good
in the world.
◂ Volunteerism creates models
for others to follow.
◂ Volunteerism cuts the tendency
to be dependent on others.
Our communities can be productive
through the spirit of volunteerism.
Without volunteerism, people could fall into
a culture of “mendicancy” – the lame
attitude of being dependent on others, both
in present and future concerns. Without
these values, progress is just an illusion.
Volunteering for
the environment
Volunteering in
schools
Volunteering in Calamities
People who volunteer
to help ravaged
communities recover
from natural disasters
such as earthquakes,
super typhoons,
tsunamis, and floods
are included in this
type of volunteering.

Offline Activity
Do One Volunteer Work a Day
You do not need to volunteer for huge
organizations in order to call yourself a
volunteer. Volunteering to do a simple task for
a person a day is one way of doing volunteer
work. For 5 days, try to demonstrate
volunteerism in order to help the following
people. Then, write a reflection on your
experience. Use the given example in a
worksheet to help you with your work.
You may
download the
worksheet,
answer, and
submit in the
designated
submission
bin in the
Google
Classroom.
