The UQAFC is inviting the 2011 men's grand finalist and premiership winning teams to a 10-year reunion during their final home game of the season on August 21st. These teams have a special place in the club's history as some of their most successful, making back-to-back grand finals in seniors and winning back-to-back premierships in reserves. The club looks forward to celebrating these teams' achievements with them on August 21st.

Coming off the back of two wins in a
row for the first time since 2018, the
QFA Div 1 Seniors were eager to put in a
big performance against a ladder
climbing Springwood. While we had
accounted for the Pumas earlier in the
year, we knew with recent competition
scores this Springwood outfit would be a
different beast. With Oval Two in
superb nick, the swirly wind appeared to
be the biggest threat to a great day of
football. The Pumas kicked with the
wind in the first, and the Red Lions
made a promising start only being 2
points behind at quarter time. Our UQ
midfielders did a lot of heavy lifting
during the first to keep the pressure on
the Pumas and allow Aaron “the better
helmet” and Damian “casual clothes”
Ashby to hit the scoreboard. Things then
began to click at the start of the second
quarter for the Red Lions, kicking five of
the first six goals to get out to a 24-point
buffer. Unfortunately, two late Puma
goals meant we headed into the main
break with just a 9-point lead. he third
quarter, as it does so often, proved to be
the turning point of the game with
Springwood piling on seven goals to one
to gain what proved to be an
unassailable lead.
A disappointing 39-points the margin at
the final siren. The Ashby duo
continued to toil all day up forward,
finishing with three goals each. The
Damian flavoured Ashby also probably
owes thanks to Josh “Graham’s Boy”
Gale who managed to hold fellow league
goal kicking rival Friis to just the solitary
goal. Others who impressed on the day
were Charlie “Brains” Pershouse, Brock
“Fridge” Thompson and the ever-
impressive Liam “Moneybags” Mcbrien.
With some other results within the
comp falling our way over the weekend,
the door remains slightly ajar for a
senior’s finals birth. However, a non-
negotiable is taking account of
Beenleigh this weekend at home.

This week the Red Lions came up against the
Springwood pumas, a team that got the better of
the ressies in our previous hit out. The weekend
started with what appeared to be the perfect
conditions for footy, the boys were fresh after a
good week on the training track, the sky was
blue, and the pavilion deck was pristine. But
would these good energies continue?
The siren sounded and the game was underway,
it was clear from the get-go that the intent and
intensity was missing, and we started slow.
Although, the game was ours to lose and even
with a quick first quarter goal from Jake ‘Snake’
Somerville, the pumas looked menacing.
Springwood capitalised with three easy goals
coming from our lack of accountability and
undisciplined rebound defence, catching the
defenders off guard. The quarter ended with
Springwood kicking 3.2-20 to our 1.1-7.
Things needed to change in the second quarter,
so Binksy gave a much-needed rev up,
reassuring the boys that the game was very
much still up for grabs. This seemed to do the
trick, as the second quarter started there was a
clear shift in momentum. The mids began to
dominate and finally give our forward the
service they were desperate for. With the
exception to a single Puma’s goal it certainly
was a one sided affair, with Zackari Mitchell,
Luke Brennan, and Matthew Cornelius kicking
majors. The second resulted in 6 scoring shots
for us to Springwood’s 1, we managed to claw
back the game to end the half in front, finishing
at 4.4-28 to Springwood’s 4.2-26.
The third resulted in yet another arm wrestle
with springwood and two goals a piece. Jake
Somerville Kicking his second and Sean
Westerhuis slotting his first. The quarter ended
with the us at 7.6-48 to the Puma’s 6.3-39.
Anything could happen here!
The momentum continued into the last as the
boys gained confidence in their skills and ability
to outrun the tired pumas. The backline could
all but put their feet up with the mids winning
the centre bounces and finally giving the
forward line the clean delivery they were
craving. Zackari and Sean scored their second,
with David Milne and Henry Mclachlan also
contributing a goal each. The final term resulted
in four unanswered goals to zero, the match
ended the springwoods 6.3-39 to our 12.10-82. A
good win for the boys, that keeps us in
contention for finals footy!
