Cricket is also very popular and played in the summer professionally over multiple days. The Golden Group is over. Can a new group step up? Two years ago, Kevin De Bruyne plunged Belgium’s Euro 2024 plans into disorder when he claimed the team was “too old” to win in an interview with The Protector. That Belgian squad had 10 players over 30 and the maximum average age of any Euro Cup 2024 team at the competition. A group-stage exit and just one goal at the World Cup put Belgium on course for a restructure.

Coach Domenico Tedesco has managed a tactical shakeup and a regular exit for some of the oldest players. Experienced bests remain, not least the 37-year-old Jan Vertonghen in defense, the 32-year-old De Bruyne himself in midfield, and 31-year-old Romelu Lukaku up visible.
Still, younger actors like De Bruyne’s Manchester City partner Jeremy Doku bring fresh vitality to the team. Euro Cup Germany Qualifying unbeaten with just four goals allowed from eight games was a welcome sign of accomplishment back on track under Tedesco.
The only other squad in Group E besides Belgium to UEFA Euro 2024 qualify unbeaten, Romania was awestruck by winning a group that also checked Switzerland and Israel. Still, Euro 2024 will test a squad sorely lacking in top-level skill.

1. Festival of Sport
Football: The festival saw the first entry of MLD 5-a-side football this year, and with an excellent team of players
Bsix were just as much in the running for the win as any of the other teams. Playing the matches as round robin, due to
many colleges pulling out at the last moment, it gave the Bsix team the maximum opportunity to show what they were
made of. We had our striker Aaron Curtis, midfielders Nicky Shuttler and Joel Gibbons then in defence Ainsley Ogilvie and
our amazing goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh. Together they made a formidable force.
First game was one by Bsix 3-1, two powerful finishes by Aaron and a well placed goal from Ainsley. The second
game was extremely tight with some excellent saves by star keeper Gurpreet. Throughout the tournament Gurpreet was
supported by Ainsley in defence against the barrage of shots taken on goal by the opposition. The third game didn’t play
out as well with a 2-1 defeat, nevertheless Bsix saw an excellent overhead volley by Joel Gibbons that struck the top left
corner with precision and power. This game almost crushed the morale of the team especially as they were getting tired
by this point, Bsix had a squad of 5 with no subs whilst other teams had as much as 10 players to rotate with.
Bsix managed to make it to the semi Finals finishing with a 3-1 defeat. Nicky with all his fancy footwork and flare
couldn’t seem to find top striker Aaron Curtis’ right foot. Nicky worked superbly, weaving in and out of the oppositions
defense. The last goal of the match was a tremendous shot by Waltham Forest in the final seconds. The team were still in
high spirits as everyone gave it their all and done this small hackney based college proud.

sport happenings. Next
Issue out December.
Football Team: Aaron Curtis, Gurpreet Singh, Nicky Shuttler, Ainsley Ogilvie and Joel Gibbons
After her 5km warm up, Hannah took on the 60m sprint
with the rest of the east London colleges. It was a fast
paced competition and she managed to achieve a
respectable 5th place. These inter college games are only
the preliminaries for the indoor winter athletics season.
Belnela, being small but mighty, threw her way into sec-
ond place with the Shot Putt as well as long jump and her
team mate Seher managed third place in the shot.
Athletics/Iron Team: Belnela Kasongo, Seher Bayam, Okan Kalkan and Hannah Brewer
Athletics, Iron Man and Iron Woman: This year was the
first time Athletics has been introduced to the festival, and it
was a major hit. We had entries from the Btec Sports class
competing in Athletics and the Iron challenges.
Iron Challenges consisted of the
following:
1000m Row and 30 crunches (male) 15 crunches
(female)
5km Cycle and 20 press ups (male) 10 press ups
(female)
800m run
As we turned up short handed for the Iron challenges we
were automatically out of contention for medal positions in
the male categories, but the females represented with
sterling performances. Hannah came second overall in the
cycle after much resistance to doing the distance required.
Belnela did the run for the team and this was a special effort
as she was competing in two events, she was required to run
in the males race where she held her own and brought
home an excellent time for Bsix. Seher did the rower and
was the first person to compete for Bsix, her fantastic time
saw her in fourth place, the rower was a close second, but
unfortunately it was the crunches that wiped her out. Okan
held the fort for the guy’s in the cycle and the shot, however
his efforts were in vain as he needed two other males to get
his final score counted.
2. Festival of Sport
Female Basketball: Once again the Women's 3v3 tournament was brought to
the festival of sport with some excellent displays of ball handling and shooting from all
teams. This year we had veteran player Geneva Bahsoon heading up the captainship
with Seher Bayam, Zhaleh Bahraini, Angela Nwandu and Theresa Larbi bringing full
support. The group stages were tough with Newvic Sixth Form College and Hackney
bringing their power squads to the floor. There was blood (figuratively), sweat and
tears in every game as the bsix team tried to stay afloat. They were overwhelmed by
the aggression shown by the Hackney Squad, who to our knowledge were not national
league, but the calibre was astounding. Nevertheless Bsix put in an excellent defensive
play in each 10 minute game which showed all other teams that these games were not
going to be a walkover. Out of 8 Teams, Bsix managed to reach 5th place. There is only
one way we go after this, that is upwards.
Female Football
Every year so far there has been an entry to the FoS football
that closes out the competition, this year was no different. We
came with a strong team who hadn’t yet played with each other,
yet still were able to bond as if instantaneously. This competition,
out of all this year saw the most team entries with every college
pulling together their finest. Leyton had the smallest yet most skilful
team with a forward that had a powerful left foot. She tested our
keeper many a time with only one getting through. The team felt a
little intimidated by the competition at first, especially when there
was such a large crowd that had gathered, yet after their first game
and a superb performance by Hopandah lahai, they’d won the
crowd over and had them cheering for Bsix. Hopandah showed true
grit and was unstoppable on the ball with some well needed
support from her comrades. She was voted player of the
tournament as her outstanding play and leadership took the team
from strength to strength.
Football Team: Hopandah Lahai, Ayomide Abiodun, Azhar Ali, Mariam Abokar, Halima Ali, Aisha Khalif and Faisa Omar
Volleyball Team: Plamena Paneva, Klaudia Kakolewska, Paulina Milewska, Kamil Nowak, Keenan Cassell, Kamila Zgadzaj
Basketball Team: Geneva Bahsoon, Seher Bayam, Okan Kalkan and Hannah Brewer
Volleyball: This is an arena that Bsix are no strangers to. Volleyball in the last 4
years has been our top achieving sport and they were not looking to change this
fact. With new players added to the roster, the dynamics were very different yet
still fiery. There were spikes, digs and volley’s aplenty, however there were a
few key players missing. Kamil Nowak and Paulina Milewska did their best to
hold the team together. Playing teams that had been beaten on many occasion,
Bsix went in over confident, and it was to their own demise. After defeating a
number of teams throughout the day with ease, they began to pump the breaks
on the aggression and were thus beaten by Leyton and NewVic Sixth Form
Colleges. This was a well needed shock to the system for a team who had
previously been beaten only once in 10 games.
For those new to the squad it was an excellent opportunity to see how the
veterans operate, so they should be stronger than ever by the time they come
up against the next set of challengers.
