Vanarai was established in 1982 by Dr. Mohan Dharia and registered as a charitable trust in 1986. It has since expanded across Maharashtra with the goal of making villages self-reliant through community participation. Key activities include watershed management, tree planting, agriculture training, and promoting sanitation, education, and women's empowerment. Vanarai also raises awareness through publications, documentaries, and its Eco Club program in schools. It has received several awards for its rural development and conservation efforts.

2. HISTORY of ORGANIZATION
Vanarai was established by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Mohan Dharia in the year
1982. After seeing the usefulness of Vanarai’s initiatives towards community development, it
was registered under the Charitable Trust Act in 1986.
Through this journey of last 30 years, Vanarai has expanded it’s ambit to all parts of
Maharashtra and now is recognised as a noteworthy voluntary organization at the State
and National levels due to its significant contribution towards society.
Various initiatives were taken up by Vanarai in more than 250 villages with the chief
objective of making them self-reliant through people’s participation.
We conduct trainings, motivation and awareness camps to encourage local participation in
the development of their villages.
A major activity of Vanarai involves transforming wasteland into productive, fertile land
through plantation.

8. • Exposure Study Tours: More than 30,000 farmers benefitted
• More than 500 vermi composting beds developed
• More than 4,000 farmers benefitted under Modern agricultural technique training
• Distribution of school kits in rural schools: 2400 students benefitted
• Installation of drinking water purifiers in more than 30 rural schools
• Construction of more than 5,000 household toilets: more than 30,000 users
• Conducted Health Camps in rural areas: 25,000 patients benefitted
• Waste Water Management through soak pits and construction of drainage lines

9. • VANARAI established the ‘Vanarai Eco Club’ in 2002. More
than 200 schools in and around Pune are members of the
Vanarai Eco Club.
• The objective is to spread awareness about environment
conservation.
• Till date, more than 2,00,000 school kids have participated in
this project.
It’s essential to inculcate the importance of environment
protection in the minds of the young population in order
to help them grow into responsible and environment
loving citizens.

10. The Vanarai Eco Club also undertakes various other activities for the
environment awareness. They are as following –
• Motivation, Orientation and Training of teachers
• Planning of school level contests and activities
• Cultural program and competition
• Bottle gardening
• Tree plantation and conservation
• Plastic Waste Free movement: PWFM

11. MEDIA AND PUBLIC AWARENESS
In addition to public education, social awakening, environmental
conservation and the overall rural development, VANARAI also
works to bring about social enlightenment. For this purpose,
VANARAI focuses on Information, Education and Communication
(IEC) while undertaking any project.
We effectively use various methodologies to achieve its objectives.
Following activities are among them.
Informative Books-Booklets
• Publication of various books & booklets to sensitize
people about environmental, agricultural and rural issues
which are important for the upliftment of the villages.

12. Vanarai Monthly Magazine
• VANARAI has been publishing a monthly magazine
and an Annual Special issue in Marathi since 1990
• VANARAI magazine is a one of the leading Marathi
magazine dedicated to Agriculture, Soil & Water
conservation, Afforestation, Environmental and Rural
Development
• Many eminent Scholars, Nationally and
Internationally acclaimed authors, writers, subject
matter experts of various field share their thoughts
through the magazine and has huge response at the
grass root level

13. Documentaries
• Vanarai has released various documentaries to inspire and educate people
to achieve the goals of environment conservation and rural development
• Documentaries like Vanarai Bandhara, Safar Vanaraichi, No Rain – No Cry,
New direction etc. have gathered heaps of praise from all walks of life
• Various other voluntary organizations screen these documentaries for public
awareness

14. Workshop, Discussion Sessions, Training
• Various workshops, Meetings, Discussion sessions,
National and International Seminars and Conferences
are regularly been hosted by VANARAI
• Topics on water – Soil Conservation, Agriculture and
allied industries, afforestation and waste land
development
• VANARAI training canters in the rural areas undertake
skill development activities for the youth and spreads
the knowledge of latest agriculture techniques and
technologies

15. • It was launched in 2016 by VANARAI in 65
villages with people’s participation on the
circumstantial of frequent drought situation in
Maharashtra
• This is village-level system to measure organize
and manage rain water. Also to promote activities
like water-soil conservation, developing grazing-
lands and tree plantation. Based on available
water we promote farmers to produce crop
consuming less water
• VANARAI seeks to widen the range of this
campaign to make Maharashtra self-sufficient in
water resources

16. Vanarai has been implementing Corporate Social Responsibility years before
the CSR Act was promulgated and always had an objective to implement
sustainable projects in order to consistently help the community. We believe in
people’s participation and community involvement which is the quintessence of
integrated development. This also impacts various other sustainable
development efforts, and helps in eliminating poverty by creating successful
nucleus of development in various geographies.
