Vanarai was established in 1982 by Dr. Mohan Dharia to empower rural communities in Maharashtra through participatory development efforts. It has expanded to over 250 villages, working on watershed management, afforestation, agriculture, women's empowerment, education, and healthcare. Notable projects include eco clubs in 200 schools, tree plantations of over 20 lakh trees, and construction of household toilets for over 30,000 people. Vanarai promotes its work through publications, documentaries, and training programs, and has received several awards for its contributions to rural development, water conservation, and the environment.
