There are three species of vampire bats found in the Americas ranging from Mexico to parts of South America. Vampire bats survive on blood from cows and other animals which they obtain through biting and licking rather than sucking. They use echolocation or sonar to hunt for food at night and roost in caves and trees. Their predators include various birds of prey and wind turbines. Vampire bats have a lifespan of up to 9 years in the wild or 20 years in captivity.
