Cycling provides significant health benefits by reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. However, valuing these health effects is complex. The World Health Organization has developed a tool called HEAT for Cycling to quantify the economic value of health benefits from cycling in monetary terms. HEAT estimates the annual monetary benefits of reduced mortality from cycling. It is based on studies finding regular cyclists have a 28% lower risk of premature death. HEAT can be used to evaluate the health impacts and economic benefits of both current and potential future levels of cycling for transportation planning and policymaking purposes.
