1. Assemblies in the VbE Membership Resource Pack are free for member
schools to use. We respectfully ask that you don’t share this material.
Please feel free to adapt this assembly to the context of your
school. There are notes at the bottom of many slides.
Delete slides which are less relevant and add images etc of your
setting. Some slides are more suited to EY/KS1/KS2/KS3/KS4.
Assemblies are designed so that much of the material can be explored in
classes and lessons for the month after the initial assembly. Eg, films,
songs, philosophical questions, scenarios etc.
The images have all been purchased, or are copyright free or are licensed
under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 License.
If you have any feedback or suggestions for VbE, please get in touch:

If you like an assembly written which isn’t in the pack yet, please let us
know and we will write if for you (please give at least 30 days notice).
Newsletters to accompany assemblies are in the Resource Pack and also
some ideas for displays.

How independent do I feel at the
moment? (1-10)
What are my goals?
How did I show
more
independence
today?
What values did I use?
Example:
To play with more people
at lunchtime
I used courage and kindness
to ask someone who was
looking lonely to join in our
game.
Example:
To be allowed to go to the
corner shop by myself
I showed I could be trusted by
going halfway to the shop with
a grown-up and having the
confidence to go into the shop
by myself, buy what we
needed and pay with the
correct money.
25. A quiet moment of prayer or reflection...
As we reflect,
think about how
independence
makes the world
a better place to be.
26. Here in our school
Let us be peaceful at all times.
Let our rooms be full of happiness
and respect for each other.
Let love be in our hearts
With kindness and compassion for all.
Let us remember
In learning together,
We grow together
And succeed together.
A prayer for all of us
27. Is it important for
people to develop more
independence in their
lives?
Why?
29. What small steps will
you take to build your
independence?
What will this give
you?
What will it give
those around you?
30. Who is a role model to
you of independence?
What can you learn
from them?
31. Thank you for listening
so well to our
Values Assembly.
32. But that’s not all…
Teachers…
A great little film showing how to help
pupils build independence in the
classroom…

Time for a moment of reflection while children and staff think about how the value has shown in their lives during the last month.
Encourage them to think of how it affected their own thinking and behaviour and also that of other people.
Re-cap on previous values.
Talk about building your ‘values toolkit’ and using them all the time.
Delete those which haven’t been explored yet and/or replace with different values as appropriate.
If you are in the second cycle, recap on all of the values from the first cycle.

Certificates can be presented to one or more pupil/staff who have received nominations and shown excellent values-based behaviour.
They are a real role-model.
Their photo (with their nominator) on the school website (if allowed) is a wonderful way of recognising their achievement.
How independent are you?
This is a very big question.
We can answer it in an overall sense, or break independence down into smaller aspects
Social independence means
Fancy Photography/Veer
Use the children’s experience of values, their ethical vocabulary to explore what character traits/qualities/virtues, they could develop to become more socially independent

What area of life can you learn to be more independent?
