Editor's Notes

  • #4 Why do you think God created the world?
  • #5 CCC 760 Christians of the first centuries said, "The world was created for the sake of the Church." God created the world for the sake of communion with His divine life, a communion brought about by the "convocation" of men in Christ, and this "convocation" is the Church. The Church is the goal of all things, and God permitted such painful upheavals as the angels' fall and man's sin only as occasions and means for displaying all the power of His arm and the whole measure of the love He wanted to give the world:
  • #8 Our Lord Jesus Christ founded the Church, His community. He chose a leader who would serve as the center of authority that would work toward the fulfillment of His mission of salvation here on earth. Ask the students to form groups with five members each. Have them answer the guide questions on p. 3 of the textbook. 3. Ask the members of the group to share with one another their answers. Let the chosen leader note and summarize the answers and will report it to the class. 4. After listening to the answers point out the connecting statement about the church and the family. Belongingness is not only found in the family. Outside your home, you can find a family in the assembly of the Body of Christ, the Church. Everyone who believes in Jesus Christ as the only Lord and Savior is part of the universal Church, but not everyone has the same local Church. A local Church refers to a smaller group of believers who believe in the same doctrine.
  • #11 It is important to know the history of the Church as part of a believer's spiritual journey.
  • #12 means a convocation or an assembly It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose.
  • #13 Ekklesia is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was established by God as His holy people. By calling itself "Church," the first community of Christian believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the Church, God is "calling together" His people from all the ends of the earth.
  • #14 The equivalent Greek term Kyriake, from which the English word "Church" and the German Kirche are derived, means "what belongs to the Lord.
  • #15 CCC 752 In Christian usage, the word "Church" designates the liturgical assembly, but also the local community or the whole universal community of believers. These three meanings are inseparable. "The Church" is the People that God gathers in the whole world. She exists in local communities and is made real as a liturgical, above all a Eucharistic, assembly. She draws her life from the Word and the Body of Christ and so herself becomes Christ's Body. In the earthly life of Jesus, He called people to follow Him and preach the Good of salvation throughout Judea, Samaria, and other towns in Israel.

  • #22 In spite of the fact that the apostles and other followers had intimately associated with Jesus during His earthly life, the day of Pentecost was considered the formal inauguration of the Christian Church. The term "Pentecost" comes from the Greek word pentekoste, meaning "the fiftieth day." It is a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. The Pentecost was originally a Jewish holiday, the Feast of Weeks, which was celebrated 50 days after the Passover. In the early Church, Pentecost was a period from Easter to Pentecost Sunday in which prayers were recited and the singing of Hallelujah was done more frequently.

  • #33 The Church was instituted personally and immediately by Jesus Christ. During His earthly life, He set up all the essential elements of the Church rites and rituals, the teachings, and the constitutions. The prophets foretold that the institution of the Church would occur at the time of the Messiah, and that the Church would be a community no longer for Israelites but for all peoples. This is the ushering in of the "New Kingdom of God."

  • #38 Kerygma (Proclamation) The English dictionary defines kerygma as "the apostolic proclamation of salvation through Jesus Christ." Every believer, as part of the Church, must proclaim the Good News, which is the salvation from the wrath of God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
  • #39 2 Koinonia (Community Fellowship) Fellowship among Christians means an intimate commitment to one another. One of God's commands to believers is to be united in love and faith, having Jesus Christ as the head of the family of believers. Thus, everyone who claims to have faith in Jesus must think of the welfare of his or her brother and sister.
  • #40 Diakonia (Servant) When Jesus Christ lived on earth as a man, He did not take the position of a king to be served, but He offered Himself as a servant of others. He healed the sick, taught the people, and prayed for His disciples. Knowing this, the Church, as the follower of Christ, must also serve others. Every believer must learn humility from Jesus Answering book activity 2 on page 14 of the textbook.
