for the Greek word ἐκκλησία
ĕkklēsia which simply means
"assembly of people".
• In the N.T. ekklesia or church
came to mean the people, who
believed in Jesus, assembled to
worship and break bread together.
• For the first 300 years the
believers met in private homes.
They were “house churches”.
There were no special buildings.

5. • In 325 AD the Roman Emperor
Constantine made Christianity the
official religion of the empire.
• Many pagan temples were converted
into places of Christian worship and
the custom of meeting in a dedicated
building for worship began.
• But in the NT the word "church" or
"churches" refers to the house groups
that met regularly in people's houses.
• “Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow
workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their

thanks but all the churches of the

• Jesus is uses "ecclesia" to refer
to all the believers who will
believe in Him in every part of
the world who are united by
their belief in Him as the Son of
God.
• Jesus saw this as a supernatural
body of people filled with the

will overcome the all powers of
darkness.

10. • Jesus deliberately chose this place to ask
His disciples who they believed He was.
• Peter cried out “You are the Messiah the
Son of God”.
• Jesus said that this was the faith that was
going to be the foundation of "My
church".
• The rock was the the gate of Hades that
was the centre of pagan worship.
• He declared that the assembly which
was created and united by their belief in
Jesus as the Son of God was going to
overcome all the pagan idolatry and false
belief symbolised by the rock they were
facing.
