In collaboration with Deloitte, we launched in 2020 the DayOne Health Data Scenario Project. Some 50 Experts coming together in three workshops for a total of more than 18 hours have identified 10 potential scenarios that will lead the way in creating a much-needed efficient and rewarding healthcare data ecosystem. “It’s cheaper to clean up a mess than to avoid a mess.” This mantra, coined by Alan Greenspan explaining why financial bubbles happen, stands very much at the core of how we as a society typically seem to deal with health: rather than nudging and rewarding people to conduct a healthier life and increase their immunity, the primary focus of efforts and resources is often on treating sickness.
How can this change? What role do health data, nutrition and immunity play in this? And what difference would it make? Find out at our next DayOne Experts Event, co-hosted by DSM Nutritional Products.
There are a couple of reasons why it is not an easy thing to successfully implement preventive measures. First of all, behavioral change is hard to accomplish. Secondly, in most cases it is challenging to show the scientific evidence that a certain measure works and is worth the effort. One key focus area is the importance of an optimal nutrient intake to support our health – with a focus on immunity and beyond. Last but not least, we need to consider a business and policy model that makes prevention less of a moral burden but a worthwhile experience that we are willing to apply in a smart way.
These are the big questions we will address at the DayOne Experts Event:

I manage my health with digital tools and I’m not alone. An estimated and growing 69% of consumers and patients are also engaged in monitoring their own healthcare . The interest in personal wellness combined with the proliferation of healthcare ‘wearables’ available to consumer puts us on the cusp of an extraordinary shift in healthcare: Technology enabled patients are empowered to change their lifestyle to prevent or stop chronic disease, and become healthier than ever before. The implications of this on every aspect of the healthcare industry –from delivery and population health to access and cost will be astounding.
But wearable technology is still in its infancy, quite complex and limited in what it can do. The next generation will be intelligent and voice-enabled and go beyond tracking to interacting with and assisting consumers with their healthcare choices, and changing behaviors for the better. Shared By The Many: Advances in technology are allowing for the provision of affordable, decentralized healthcare for the masses and are lowering the barriers to entry in less developed markets.
The analysis in PSFK’s Future of Health Report has yielded a number of insights, the most evident of which is mobile technology as a catalyst for change. The mobile phone and connected tablet computer are allowing for the distribution of a broad range of medical and support services. This is especially important in countries with little or no healthcare infrastructure and areas in which there are few trained healthcare professionals. These technologies also allow trained professionals to perform quality control remotely.
Amongst the many significant developments is a shift towards one-on-one, in- field diagnostics and monitoring. Services that were once only available at a doctor’s office or hospital are now available on-demand through low-tech, affordable solutions. Personal systems allow for ‘good enough’ diagnostics that would have been difficult, expensive and timely to attain previously.
Using a basic phone with adapted software, a health worker can test for myriad symptoms - even cancer. This information can be relayed to a central medical care center where doctors and trained professionals can react to the data, provide prompt diagnosis and suggest treatment options. The ability to capture this data and get quick responses remotely means better healthcare, fewer trips to the hospital (which, for many means days away from home and family), and less time away from work.
A change is also occurring that is seeing increased access to and sharing of health information. This is made possible by the proliferation of systems designed to overcome infrastructure insufficiencies. these systems are enabling the broadcast of information and receipt of subsequent feedback in virtually any setting. From ‘town crier’ systems to ‘internet by text’, the collective knowledge found on the web is being made available to populations around the world who previously lacked access. The connectivity that is enabling the sharing of health information is also powering the growth of social networks focused on health and medical care. These networks are allowing professionals, health workers and individuals to connect and share knowledge quickly.
PSFK’s Future of Health Report details 15 trends that will impact health and wellness around the world. Simple advances such as off-the-grid energy and the introduction of gaming into healthcare service offerings sit alongside more future-forward developments such as bio-medical printing. Regarding the new MDR, the big question that arises is not only whether a piece of software falls under the definition of a medical device, but also who decides whether it does. At least in this regard the new regulation is clear: it is the regulator. Which means, according to Karin Shulze from SFL, that If a company offers an app which they do not consider a medical device themselves, but the regulator does, the distribution of this app will be stopped.

Homeostasis is nature’s engineering behind the most complex autonomic system that exists: the human body. Homeostasis is a self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. Disruption in homeostasis results in malfunctioning of natural autonomic system causing chronic diseases. Chronic diseases have been the leading cause of death and human suffering in the last 50 years. They also have resulted in highest financial burden for individuals and countries. This can be corrected using external augmentation of the homeostasis loop. Recent progress in artificial pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes is a compelling example for such augmentation. In this paper we discuss emerging multimodal approaches for such augmentation in the context of chronical diseases. We show that multimodal sensing and fundamental technology developed by multimedia computing community may offer powerful augmentation of natural homeostasis to assist in management of chronic diseases.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans, and among Los Angeles Latinos—the ethnic majority of patients in the Los Angeles County (LAC) safety net—the prevalence of DR is ~50%. Despite evidence that early detection and treatment can prevent blindness from DR, a significant number of persons with diabetes in our system fail to receive annual screening examinations and/or sight-saving treatments due to lack of access to specialty care. To date, the effect of a system level intervention on improving access to eye care and definitive treatment for diabetic retinopathy in an urban medically underserved, or safety net, population has not been evaluated. The objective of this project is to evaluate the impact of teleretinal screening on access to specialty ophthalmic care for diabetic patients in LAC who need monitoring or treatment for diabetic retinopathy. We propose a pre-post analysis of the LAC teleretinal screening implementation, and we aim to evaluate the number of patients screened for diabetic retinopathy, the number presenting for timely ophthalmic follow-up care and treatment, and the cost of the program.

In medical diagnosis, the hypothesis might be doctors' experience which would be used as input to predict a disease that saves the life of mankind. It is been observed that a properly cleaned and pruned dataset provides far better accuracy than an unclean one with missing values. Selection of suitable techniques for data cleaning alongside proper classification algorithms will cause the event of prediction systems that give enhanced accuracy. In this proposal detection of myocardial infarction using new parameters is proposed with increased accuracy and efficiency of the existing model. Additional parameters are used to predict MI with more accuracy. The proposed model is used to predict an early diagnosis of MI with the help of expertise experiences and data gathered from hospitals.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease is considered one of the most significant health issues affecting
morbidity and mortality and contributes heavily to the state of global health. Chronic kidney
disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are chronic illnesses that have a dramatic
impact on the cost of health care delivery in the United States. Early detection and intervention
are critical to the long-term prognosis of this patient population; however, a health disparity
exists because not everyone who is at risk for CKD has access to resources for screening and
treatment. One of the goals of community-level and national programs is to create parity of care
by focusing attention on marginalized communities that are at a statistically higher risk for CKD.
The global impact of CKD and ESRD is significant because long-term survival depends on
expensive technology and many regions of the world lack the resources needed to treat this
disease. Health behavior and culture are known contributors to the long-term survivability of the
disease. Since early detection is the key, creating screening programs that target populations at
greatest risk will have the highest impact, and be the most cost-effective solution to combating
this chronic illness.

Chronic Kidney Disease: Problems, Perceptions, and Strategies for Intervention
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is considered one of the primary global health issues and
contributes significantly to the social burden of care. CKD, along with cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer, is a chronic illness that is classified as a non-
communicable disease (Healthy People 2020, 2013). Non-communicable diseases have a
significant societal impact to domestic growth, productivity, and health care costs and are the
most common cause of morbidity and premature death in the United States (Couser, Remuzzi,
Mendis, & Tonelli, 2011). Chronic illnesses are also characterized by physical and emotional
stressors that can become overwhelming when simultaneously coping with multiple
comorbidities (Moulton, 2008). Although the World Health Assembly has determined that non-
communicable diseases contribute heavily to the state of global health, they concede that public
health policy can dramatically affect patient morbidity and mortality (Couser et al., 2011). CKD
is a public health threat that is on the rise and will likely not slow without deliberate intervention.

So, as lawyers and regulatory advisers, we have to be innovative and also come up with new solutions. This is a learning curve we have to go through together with entrepreneurs, industry and regulatory bodies“.
In other words, instead of being a French garden à la Versaille, the legal landscape has become a rather rough terrain to navigate. The uncertainty can be seen as a threat and show killer. A more entrepreneurial attitude, however, would be to see it as an opportunity, if not an invitation, to pursue more of a greenfield approach. But in order to make this happen, it is essential to address the legal aspects early on and make them part of the solution.
Protection
Accustomaed as it is to a science and engineering-driven approach, the healthcare industry has to change its mindset when it comes to protecting its business. As it is reasonable to patent a digital solution and to protect medical devices as well as mobile app interfaces by means of design and trademark rights, the legal framework is becoming more important. So, developing a great technological solution and then having it beautified later on will not suffice. Those capabilities have to be built in from day one to ensure freedom to operate and to generate added value from the digital solutions.

So it comes as no surprise that the DayOne Experts Event “Legal challenges and opportunities for healthcare innovation”, held online on September 30, attracted a slightly smaller audience than when the talks usually concern revolutionary new pieces of digital technology ready to disrupt healthcare as we know it — for the better.
