Where?.....
What we wanted to find out?
• We interviewed the students away from the
library to further understand their work, study
habits and preferences
– Our students day doesn’t revolve around one
particular space
– Why did they make those choices?
– Did anything hinder their study?
– Would this help us support our users better…..?
Findings
• Apathy as a whole, more college than library
related!
• lack of awareness/willingness to find out…..
– Are we promoting resources properly and
effectively?
Findings
• Students conditioned by previous experiences
which effects their behaviour and enforces
behaviour patterns – library anxiety
Findings
• Surrounding environment is important but
different depending on the individual
– How do we give everyone what they need?
Findings
• Different preferences in space and activities
exist between different subjects
– Arts/hums & social science
• Prefer ambiance and comfort, ie. cushions, sofa,
temperature, decoration
• Dependent on physical book stock
– Science/technology (STEM)
• See spaces in terms of their utilitarian value, ie.
facilities, equipment
• Increased use of online resources and limited use of
physical book stock
Findings
• IT Resource Centre
– PCs themselves under used, most students only
come in to print – mirrors IT usage stats
• Max 5 mins
– Space itself is heavily used but by students with
own laptop or by those who need specific
packages on uni machines
– Un-official group working area!
Findings
• Positive outcomes
– Ability to alleviate problems and give advice about
services during the interviews
– Take comments away and implement improvements
asap
• ensure students listened too
– Explain our inability to put in place some changes
What have we put into place?
• Alternative lighting
• And….
• However, we’re limited by nature of building and
grade ii* listed status and budget
What next?
• Work closely with JCR/MCR student reps to
promote activities
– Library working group to discuss ideas and
requirements
• Keep an open dialogue with students using
existing services, ie. tea & coffee, craft hour
What next?
• Look at how to increase usage of IT Suite or
provide zoned areas for different activities
• Lighting to be improved over summer
