Presentation used to back up our show and tell session during UXlabs at the UXlibs conference 2017. UXlabs allowed participants the chance to show their in-progress projects to conference attendees and discuss their initial findings and ethnographic research methods used. We discussed with other attendees our findings from the student and user interviews we had carried out in the college earlier in the year. We were looking at where the students like to work and why – what helps / hinders their work.

Research and development methods - ethnography study of library employees

However, there are also five challenges: it takes significant time for instructors to find suitable materials; resources must be appropriately tailored for students; students may need training to use electronic materials; instructors require training to effectively use OER; and digital resources could disappear if the source is removed without backups.

The findings to date have identified practical challenges facing students' use of technology in their studies, pointed to conceptual issues such as their developing sense of professional and scholarly identity, and allowed us to map the spaces and places that students use or create as they pursue their studies. The presentation will identify early implications and provide an overview of the remainder of the project's work. Participants will be invited to relate the project's work to their students' activities and inform the implementation phase that will conclude the project.

Singapore Management University’s Li Ka Shing Library was designed in 2002 and built prior to 2005. It was officially opened in 2006 as part of a brand new university in the city with the two Singapore cultural icons on each side, the Singapore Art Museum and the Singapore National Museum overlooking the Campus Green with its heritage trees. The six storey building houses the library that occupies four storeys, with levels one and two housing various businesses, cafes and restaurants and other campus facilities. The growth in student numbers coupled with the changing needs and expectations of today’s student population and the outdated design features have prompted the library and the university management to begin a master planning exercise. The scope of the master planning process and the journey itself presented both expected and unexpected outcomes in terms of raising awareness of space use, realignment of library operations, user involvement, service re-design, multi-purpose spaces usable by a variety of user groups, commercial use of spaces, fund raising, and political and strategic alliances across the university

A project team contributed ideas and expertise to develop prototypes and refine the resource based on user feedback. Over iterative cycles, they incorporated new ideas and specialized input. The final product was a flexible online tool to support students' information skills, created using a custom content management system allowing for ongoing updates.

UX and its wider impact
- 1. UX and its wider impact Kirstie Preest & Samantha Percival
- 2. Where?.....
- 3. What we wanted to find out? • We interviewed the students away from the library to further understand their work, study habits and preferences – Our students day doesn’t revolve around one particular space – Why did they make those choices? – Did anything hinder their study? – Would this help us support our users better…..?
- 4. Findings • Apathy as a whole, more college than library related! • lack of awareness/willingness to find out….. – Are we promoting resources properly and effectively?
- 5. Findings • Students conditioned by previous experiences which effects their behaviour and enforces behaviour patterns – library anxiety
- 6. Findings • Surrounding environment is important but different depending on the individual – How do we give everyone what they need?
- 7. Findings • Different preferences in space and activities exist between different subjects – Arts/hums & social science • Prefer ambiance and comfort, ie. cushions, sofa, temperature, decoration • Dependent on physical book stock – Science/technology (STEM) • See spaces in terms of their utilitarian value, ie. facilities, equipment • Increased use of online resources and limited use of physical book stock
- 8. Findings • IT Resource Centre – PCs themselves under used, most students only come in to print – mirrors IT usage stats • Max 5 mins – Space itself is heavily used but by students with own laptop or by those who need specific packages on uni machines – Un-official group working area!
- 9. Findings • Positive outcomes – Ability to alleviate problems and give advice about services during the interviews – Take comments away and implement improvements asap • ensure students listened too – Explain our inability to put in place some changes
- 10. What have we put into place? • Alternative lighting • And…. • However, we’re limited by nature of building and grade ii* listed status and budget
- 11. What next? • Work closely with JCR/MCR student reps to promote activities – Library working group to discuss ideas and requirements • Keep an open dialogue with students using existing services, ie. tea & coffee, craft hour
- 12. What next? • Look at how to increase usage of IT Suite or provide zoned areas for different activities • Lighting to be improved over summer
