Over view of Trip
St. Xaviers college has organised a industrial visit on 30th November 2017 to UTH milk plant
located in Mandya, Karnataka 127km away from college.
The visit was organised under the guidance of Department head Mrs. Indira Vinod and
coordinator Mrs. Seena Jose.
Journey Details
We have started our journey from college campus at 10 am in morning.
While travelling we had come across a different colleges like RajaRajeshwari
college of Engineering, campus of Christ university at kengeri etc.
We have also seen the India’s largest Cocoon market at ramanagara.
We reached UHT milk plant, Mandya at 1 pm and meet Mr Choude Gowda
who is marketing manager and he guided us to know how the work process in
the plant starts.
Company Profile
Mandya district co-operative milk union limited, registred in the year 1987 jurisdiction of
Mandya District only it covered 7 Taluks, It is one of the leading milk union in the state of
Karnataka. It was registration during the year 1987, Before registration Mysore and Tumkur
milk union to procure milk from Mandya district dairy co-operative societies. At the time of
registration the union procurement of milk was 99000 liter per day through 410 dairy co-
operative societies now the union is procuring 8.34 lakh liter per day through 1184 dairy co-
operative societies.
In 1988 union started marketing about 5000 liters per day which gradually extended to about
15000 liters. There came a boon through the advent milk marketing in Bangalore city from
1993. As on Today milk sales about 2.64 lakh liter per day.
The union undertook the work of organization of milk co-operative in ‘AMUL Pattern’ with
the main objective of socio-economic reformation of the farmers in the rural areas through
dairying as main subsidiary occupation.

The union has 1184 functioning dairy co-operative societies of which 518 are women
societies. The union as established 241 women dairy co-operative societies under STEP
program of government of India.

synonym for quality milk and milk products.

The plant is expanded from 30 MTPD to 60 MTPD with processing facilities expanded from
4 LLPD to 7LLPD at project cost of Rs. 104 crores.

Milk Powder Section - Processing Of Milk Powder Contains Classifier Unit,
Pasteurizer Unit, Separator, And Powder Packing.
Processing Hall - Separates solid impurities from flow of milk. Before that milk was
kept at low temperature in tank. Pasteurizer Unit performs pasteurizing process
continuously on milk so that milk was disinfected from bacteria. A steam Boiler
passes heat to the milk and water content was evaporated from milk.

Butter Process Section - Butter was made from cream made continuously from
machine. Salt as Preservatives and colour as additives are added to the butter
continuously. It contains 40ltrs of milk at a time which evaporates at 90°C. The milk
which remains extract is used to make peddas and sweets.
Boiler section- A section where milk is boiled at 90°C and then kept for cooling at
5°C.
Account Section- The accounts of the plant were maintained.
Packaging Section – In packaging section there are many packaging systems. Many
labours are working in the packaging section especially female workers. The
packaging was done automatically the workers were forming the packets in crates
and were removing the defective or faulty milk package from the system outside.
There were 12 ½liters milk packets in one crates.The colour of the package also
denotes the fat it contains. The blue contains 3.1fat, the orange contains 4.6, the
green contains 4.1fat. The plant remove fat from the milk and used to make butter.
And the liquid from the butter is used to make ghee products.
Hardening Room- Here the butter is stored. The butter is stored at 5°C.This was the
coolest room in the plant to store butter.
Group Observation
Firstly, while leaving from the college campus had come across many educational
institutions and also India’s largest cocoon market in ramanagara. When we reached
the destination ie; The Mandya District Co-operative milk Producers Societies Union
Ltd. Gejjalagere, Maddur,Tq.
We were glad to see the area and such a big plant. There were a statue. Outside the
plant there was an outlet named as Nandini Milk Galaxy. There was a security
checkup done to verify our identity. We had seen the most area of the plant was under
construction. The infrastructure of the plant was good and proper parking facility was
given to the workers and staff. Secondly, there were trucks named as Nandini
Transport. Most of the transport vehicles were of Karnataka registered. All the
vehicles contain the Milk Tank beside.
As we had enter in the plant there was a bad smell of milk. Then we were we shown
all the sections of the plant and the processing unit of the plant. There was a milk
powder packaging room where the powder was packed in 500gm and 1000gm for

all the Karnataka schools for Mid-Day Milk under the scheme Ksheera Bhagya
Yojana. There was a bulk quantity of coal in one unit for passing the steam to heat the
milk. The steam was passed through centralised big pipes.We were told under the
guidance that, the total production of the plant is 9 lakh out of which 4.5l is loose
milk and remaining 4.5l is packed milk.
The working hours of the plant are 24 hours in 3 shifts. The works begins at 9.30am –
5.30pm. There are 390 permanent staff in the unit. Also there are 1200 contract
labours working in the plant. From Mandya the distribution starts to areas like
Ramanagara, Chanpatna etc. Last but not the least, the manager of the plant had given
all the students a fresh hot cup of the milk.
Outcome of the visit
From the visit I had a very good experience at The Mandya District Co-operative
milk Producers Societies Union Ltd. As a visit had a good combination of technical
and management exposure.
Showed a more interest in asking questions about the management and supply chain
system in different areas.
A good technical exposure as we have seen the process of packing which was
completely automatic.
Had a very good experience of visit and are thankful to the Industry and the
management for arranging the visit.
Had a good experience about industrial environment.
