The team proposes an attachment for crutches that allows them to stand upright without being held. This addresses the problem that crutch users currently have no hands-free solution and must constantly hold their crutches. The attachment would use a weight-triggered mechanism to solve this problem simply and at low cost compared to existing alternatives. The team's business model involves outsourcing manufacturing and selling the attachments online and through distributors to reach the large market of annual crutch users.

This study examined the influence of rumination and mind-wandering on memory for negative and neutral distracting words. 44 students participated in a task where they were induced to ruminate or be distracted, then viewed pictures with distracting words and later completed a recognition test. Results showed that rumination alone did not affect memory for distractions. However, for those induced to ruminate, people high in mind-wandering tendency recognized more distracting words than those low in mind-wandering tendency. The findings suggest that mind-wandering tendencies must be considered to understand how rumination impacts memory for irrelevant information.

PHILIPS DigiSummit - A startup approach to hacking marketsMeasureWorks
Modern markets are noisy. In our rush to launch new or improved products we tend to forget that customers don’t buy what they don’t understand.
From working with hundreds of startups there are 5 lessons learned to build the right product features within the target market. In this session we’ll discuss marketing positioning, founders blindess, the importance of analytics and experimentation and how to use all of this to grow your product faster.
Practical Steps in Determining Your Product Vision (Product Tank Bristol - Oc...cxpartners
In this talk that I gave at ProductTank Bristol I created a product vision for a global health insurance client, including a new workshop format that you can use yourself to determine your own product vision statement.
The document discusses customer segments and value propositions. It emphasizes the importance of understanding which customers a product or service is targeting and the specific jobs or needs they want addressed. It outlines different types of customer segments like business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and multi-sided markets. The document also discusses testing value propositions through minimum viable products and experiments to validate customer problems and solutions.
What your strategy professors forgot to teach youPatrick Stähler
Our strategy professors always taught us that you have to position yourself in the right industry, analyze the market or have the right core competencies. And innovation will happen in products and processes. Really?
With the classical units of analysis for strategy like industry, markets we do not understand what is happening out there in the digital area.
We need a new unit of analysis. The only constant in the digital tsunami is the job we solve for our customer. And only the business model is in the end decisive for value creation aka solving the job of the customers.
The locus of innovation in the digital age is the business model and all its elements. The business model gives us new boxes to think in an thereby breaking the barriers of our conventional thinking about products, markets or industries.
Besides the business model, we need a new process to plan in. Strategic planning does not work since it wants to predict the future. With entrepreneurial design, we do not plan the result of the process but the process itself to discover the future.
Ecosack designs, manufactures, and sells cloth bags as a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Their bags are made from recycled cloth waste to benefit the environment and tap into the growing market for reusable bags. Ecosack provides a durable, affordable bag that can help reduce plastic waste by offering customers a reusable option. They validated their minimum viable product by exhibiting bags at a local event and received positive feedback from 70% of over 60 customers surveyed.
1) Companies that satisfy customer needs effectively identify who their core and secondary customers are through demographics and psychographics. They also identify non-customers to understand how to attract new groups.
2) The customer is in the driver's seat today more than the past due to increased competition, technology giving customers more knowledge, and higher demand for quality. Customers can more easily research and purchase products.
3) Medtronic focuses on customers by involving doctors to understand patient problems and invent devices to address their needs, fulfilling their mission of alleviating pain and extending lives.
The document discusses Peter Drucker's views on customer focus and satisfaction. It provides questions about identifying customers and their needs. Drucker believes companies should consider who their customer is, what creates value for them, and if their strategies effectively meet customer needs. Medtronic focuses on alleviating pain and improving health by understanding patient problems. The document also discusses identifying non-customers to find new opportunities and gain market share.
These are the slides used in the 150 Startups kick-off workshop held at Bow Valley College May 12th to 14th that was facilitated by Evan Hu & Craig Elias
This document discusses identifying competitors and understanding differences between offerings. It begins with an overview of marketing management concepts like demand, power, cost, margin, and allocating marketing expenses. It then covers positioning and perceptual mapping, including coming up with a positioning statement that identifies the target segment, competitor set, and core value propositions. Methods for developing perceptual maps are examined, including similarity-based multidimensional scaling and attribute-based factor analysis. An example perceptual map of the erectile dysfunction market is shown. Group exercises have respondents analyze competitor sets and perceptual maps.
The document discusses the differences between products and services. It notes that products are tangible objects that can be touched, felt, tasted, etc., while services are intangible amenities provided by people. The document then discusses how customers want innovative products and how innovative products drive revenue. It outlines the traditional new product development process and notes that most new products fail. It discusses the importance of building a minimum viable product and using the build-measure-learn loop to accelerate learning. Finally, it discusses the evolution of product thinking and some of the skills and approaches involved in product thinking.

Innovation is one of the ultimate buzzwords of our era but what is it really? What is its meaning? How can we see it? Replicate it? Scale it? In his talk, I propose that innovation really is the “removal of friction” from a system; and that through this lens we can understand the rise of design, lean startup, Silicon Valley and possibly many other innovative happenings across time.
The talk covers the following topics:
1. The Real Lesson Steve Jobs Taught Us
2. The Rise of Design
3. Innovation = The Removal Of Friction?
4. Co-opting Innovation
This document discusses business models and the business model canvas tool. It provides an overview of the business model canvas, explaining that it is a visual chart with nine blocks that help define a company's value proposition, infrastructure, customers, and finances. It then gives examples of filling out the business model canvas for some sample companies and business ideas, including a delivery startup called DELFAST, a tie company called SMART TIE, and a CRM tool called NetHunt. Each example fills out the different blocks of the canvas like key partners, activities, and revenue streams. The document emphasizes that the business model canvas is a useful framework for defining the various aspects of a business model.
This document discusses the use of machine learning for predicting customer lifetime value (CLV). It argues that while machine learning is well-suited for classification and descriptive tasks, it falls short for long-term CLV prediction because it tries to explain all customer behavior patterns. Instead, CLV models should embrace the inherent randomness in customer actions. The document then presents the standard new view of using CLV models to make forecasts, and then applying machine learning to explain differences across customers based on those predictions. It provides examples of layering machine learning on top of CLV models for B2C and B2B customers.

This is the slidedeck of the workshop "Move your product ownership to the next level". It also includes the links to valuable resources you might want to use ;)
This document discusses key concepts from a chapter about satisfying customers' needs. It defines important terms like "the customer is in the driver's seat" and discusses how companies can connect with customers through pull marketing. It also explains that identifying non-customers can help organizations understand who should not be considered customers and why. Medtronic is provided as an example of a company that focuses on customers by involving doctors to understand patient problems and device needs.
The document discusses where new ideas come from and how to develop new ideas. It begins by outlining the objectives of understanding sources of new ideas, developing customer-friendly ideas using design thinking, understanding the new product development process, and testing ideas. It then provides examples of successful inventions and failures to illustrate that experts are often wrong in predicting what will succeed. The rest of the document discusses sources of new ideas, developing ideas using techniques like brainstorming and design thinking, screening ideas, and testing ideas with customers.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

5th LF Energy Power Grid Model Meet-up SlidesDanBrown980551
5th Power Grid Model Meet-up
It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect

HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away

Bram Verhoef, Head of Machine Learning at Axelera AI, presents the “How Axelera AI Uses Digital Compute-in-memory to Deliver Fast and Energy-efficient Computer Vision” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy. This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. This technique facilitates the realization of high-performance, energy-efficient and cost-effective computer vision capabilities at the thin and thick edge, extending the frontier of what is achievable with current technologies.
In this presentation, Verhoef unveils his company’s pioneering chip technology and demonstrates its capacity to deliver exceptional frames-per-second performance across a range of standard computer vision networks typical of applications in security, surveillance and the industrial sector. This shows that advanced computer vision can be accessible and efficient, even at the very edge of our technological ecosystem.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

a. Briefly describe your business idea. Who is the customer? What is their need or
problem (their “job to be done”)? What is your offering? How will it solve the
customer’s problem?
PROBLEM: Current crutch models are inconvenient because you have to always think
about where you want to put a crutch before you let them go. There is currently no
cost-effective solution on the market to remedy this problem.
IDEA/OFFERING: An attachment to current crutch models that allows the crutch to
stand upright and not fall down when crutch is left unattended.
CUSTOMER: The customer is any person with an injury requiring the use of crutches.
SOLUTION: An attachment to a crutch that is weight triggered to prevent the crutch
from falling.

3. What does the Customer Need or Want? What is the Problem to be addressed?
a. What does the customer need or want? What is the problem to be addressed?
The crutch is limited to the person always holding it and the alternatives are
expensive; We are addressing this limitation by providing an innovative and cheaper
solution for self-standing standing.
!
For example when a person has to sit down, they have to let go of the crutch. The
person has two options, either lay the crutches out on the floor, or find an
unobstructed location to lean the crutch on; this is a hassle for the injured.
!
Other examples are actions that require you to reach out such as: opening a door,
grabbing an object, or getting into the car.
!
a. Why is the problem important to the customer? How do you know? How have you
validated the need?
Crutches were created to help the patient with their daily activities; however current
crutch models are restricted to the person constantly supporting them. Removing this
restriction from crutches will give patients a greater degree of freedom.

alternatives?
There is currently no cost-effective solution on the market that allows the current
crutch to self-stand.
!
ALTERNATIVES:
!
a.
The only alternatives available to customers right now are:
• Crutch harness/belt – $20 - This is a body belt that secures crutches to your
body. The problem with this alternative is that it does not allow you to be
independent of crutch.
• Knee Walker - $200
• Hands Free Crutch - $350

a. How will the user use your offering? Will any special skills or training be required?
No special training is required. The current crutch style has been used for decades and
is common knowledge for most of the population. The standing crutch will appear as a
normal crutch so it should be intuitive in use.
!
The sprout attachment will function via a weight-triggered mechanism. When weight is
applied to the crutch (during normal use) the attachment will withdraw. When weight
is removed, the attachment will sprout allowing the crutch to stand freely.
!
a. Why will the customer/economic buyer choose your solution over the alternatives?
! a customer is presented with multiple walking aids, they will choose the most

convenient aid that will allow them the most function with their condition. A standing
crutch will be less limiting for daily activities. Due to increasing costs of health care
(medicare requires 20% out of pocket fee), limited coverage by insurance and
expensive alternatives: the customer will choose the more cost effective solution.
5. What is your Business Model?
a. What is your revenue model? How will you get paid?
!
We plan to outsource manufacturing of attachment (CMTC Solutions), and we will
get paid by selling product to distributors and retailers. We will also have an online
